Based on certain families who I've known personally in the "truth", there was infidelity which resulted in children out of wedlock, drug abuse, abortion (involving an elder's teenager), verbal, emotional, & physical abuse (by parents and spouses), and dependence on public assistance. Are these particular Witnesses the minority, or has anyone observed that there is a number of dysfunctional families in the "organization"?

I remember Earl McGee very well. He was our Circuit Overseer in the mid 80s. I recall Brother McGee being nice, but looking back he was so overbearing. He forced pioneering on everyone, even children. He created the title of "Unofficial Pioneer", meaning that unbaptized publishers could pioneer. Brother McGee also promoted child baptism in the circuit. He's the main reason why I was baptized at a very young age, and was a full-time Pioneer at 10 years old (SMH). As a child I was fond of him and his wife (and they liked me a lot too), but I was relieved when they left. I was able to actually be a child again...well somewhat.

How are elders really selected?

This is very interesting to me. It makes a lot of sense now. All my mother ever wanted in life was to be an elder's wife. My dad only made it to M.S. (which wasn't exactly good enough for her). My dad did all of the "right things" for a number of years. However, once my parents started having severe financial problems it seemed like the elders were on my father's case more and more for some reason. So becoming an elder was out of the question.
Based on the info provided, in certain ways the selection process seems very corporate to me.

Watchtower = Elders can disfellowship people for being too FAT!!! Has this happened?
by Witness 007 inwatch 1974 p.167 "by disobediently overindulging in food and making a glutton of himself, he fails to show love for jehovah...if in the presence of others does he selfishly ignore there needs and take more than his share?
is he grossly overwieght but shows no restraint at all as to food, habitually gorging himself?
does he feel un-comfortable, perhaps even sick because of eating too much ...glutton has no place in god's congregation...they will not inherit god's kingdom...".

At least half of the JWs I knew growing up were overweight, and some were obese. The P.O. at my former congregation is obese and I remember a CO's wife who was totally obese. I recall most of the gatherings I went to as a kid involved pizza and KFC.

When I was growing up I was told that the " Holy Spirit " assisted in the selection of elders. Thinking back, it seemed pretty political to me. For those who are/were elders or have/had close relationships with them, how are elders really selected?

Was Michael Jackson reproved in 1983 and DF/DA in 1989?
by Olin Moyles Ghost inthere seems to be quite a bit of conflicting information about michael jackson's jw status as a young man.
it's clear that he was raised a witness and that he was a practicing witness (a publisher) in the 1970s and early 1980s.
but there's some uncertainty about (1) whether he was baptized, and (2) whether and when he was df/da.. i was looking around on yahoo answers and found the following question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=aqerwd.lhqkco.59fnqahbrty6ix;_ylv=3?qid=20090628174024aafwsky&show=7.

@Band on the Run, actually Michael Jackson did not start the whole crotch-grabbing nonsense until the "Bad" and "Dangerous" era (late 80s/early 90s). This was after he disassociated himself.

@Gayle, thanks for posting that link.
The photos brought back some good childhood memories. I actually really enjoyed going to the circuit assemblies when I was growing up. As a child, Woodland Hills was fascinating to me for some reason. I enjoyed serving lemonade in the cafeteria and wearing those pink smocks. I actually was on the program a few times when I was a kid. One of the few pleasant JW memories I have.

I do not know the Jackson family personally, but here's what I do know. According to J. Randy Taraborrelli's bio, Michael Jackson disassociated himself from the JWs. I don't recall the exact dates, but it was between 1987 and 1989. Taraborrelli stated in his book that Michael did not like anyone telling him what to do, and that as an entertainer it is difficult to be a Jehovah's Witness. Especially one of MJ's status.
According to LaToya Jackson's bio, she was a baptized and active in the religion until she married her ex husband. LaToya was ultimately disfellowshipped, most likely around the time she did Playboy.
Kathrine Jackson and Maureen "Rebbie" Jackson are still JWs.

Smurf Rumors - 2 Questions
by A question inas the board no doubt knows, there was some sort of rumor in the early 1980s going around amongst the witnesses that a smurf doll came to life in the kingdom hall, or that smurfs were demonic.. 2 questions:.
1. do any not remember any such rumors though they were witnesses at the time?.
2. of those who do, did all the witnesses believe them, or otherwise, what proportion rejected the rumor as nonsense?.

I forgot all about the Smurf urban legend until I started reading Kyria Abrahams' book. I am a child of the 80s, so this was a widely spread tale. After this absurd story went around, all of us Witness kids were forbidden from watching the Smurfs cartoon and owning any merchandise. One of my best friends was obsessed with those little blue creatures. So being a good little JW in training, I tattled on her to my mom because she was watching the cartoon when I was over her house. I remember telling on her too because she had a Michael Jackson poster on her wall. At one point they were trying to get all of us to stop listening to Michael Jackson's music, but that's another story...
Some of us were also forbidden from playing Pac Man, because of the ghosts. (SMH)
