We always were a liberal family when it came to entertainment and still are (renting r-movies, or watching them at the cinema, etc). But i heard once from a sister that she refused to watch American Idol because it had the word 'idol' in it, so watching it = idolatry.

What books, songs, artists, movies, etc were banned in your JW home?
by serenitynow! inmy mother was very strict about entertainment.
in school i was doing a project about teen suicide and had checked out some books on suicide and abortion.
i had alot of explaining to do for that.

yes, i don't think it's from an actual WT publication either. Although I haven't been around to read all of them.

Apart from the awful, crazy illustration, if the boy with leukemia has only a few days left and he's supposed to be left in peace in order to enjoy it; how come JW don't leave 'worldly people' alone to enjoy the few days they have left in this system?

How many here have never been one of Jehovah's Witnesses?
by Spade inhow many here have never been one of jehovah's witnesses?
there seems to be a common denominator of former witnesses who accuse the watchtower society of being a false organization.
what they crave is acknowledgment that their way is the best way.

@ Spade
The WTBTS claims that it alone has the right to guide people to God, and has monopolized the path of salvation. After careful research anyone with an objective mind can find out that they have been spreading false doctrines, predictions, and basically keeping people in perpetual disillusion.
Even if there is no other form of organized religion that is 100% correct, I don't think that we necessarily have to pick the least of all evils. Especially when the religion in question claims to be far superior than others while failing on so many levels.
I'm still formally a JW, but i plan on leaving in the near future for this reason. I truly think that having questions that might remain unanswered is better than having all the answers but being deprived of the right to question them.
Being sincere with myself, I admit that many things such as life, our brain, the hereafter, the supernatural, death and so forth are for the most part a mystery. Scientists and religionists try to provide explanations, but does that satisfy our thirst for knowledge? Even before coming to this site when I still believed the whole JW dogma, I couldn't provide an answer to many of these things. In that aspect nothing has changed, I'm just a human being desiring to understand and learn. My question to you is: Are you able to provide an explanation to everything you see and feel, and how much of that is a direct illumination from the Watchtower?

by RULES & REGULATIONS inremember the made up stories of witnesses in djibouti, africa where they had to walk 2 days in alligator infested waters with no shoes in the blazing sun to attend the meetings?
they made it to the meetings in these terrible conditions.. talk about made up stories!
here is a field service experience that was told at yesterday's public talk which would fall into the made up stories!.

Your story about the pioneer with great housekeeping skills was told in exact detail here in my country too (East Europe), with the only difference being that the pioneer was supposed to be not from the US, but rather a local sister. DagothUr heard it too in Romania, so I guess it's a favourite among COs.

I said I would do it and I just did, told my mom I want nothing to do with the org anymore
by Soldier77 ini would copy and paste my emails with my mom, but that would probably be too revealing.. anyway, i said in a post a while back that i was going to tell my mom i no longer want anything to do with the organization.
there have been a series of emails between the two of us lately and she was probing to see what was going on with me.
i haven't been out in fs in almost a year and i haven't been to a thursday night mtg in over 9 months.

I'm really happy you let out your real feelings about the org. I can truly relate to the fact that talking about these things with family can be extremely emotionally draining. It's great that your mum didn't react in a negative way. You're lucky to have such an understanding parent.

Paul, leading authority on Christianity, does NOT quote Jesus!
by Terry inpaul's letters practically invent christianity.. the gospels trickled in after him.. paul never walked with jesus and yet explains him.. never a quote from the master at all.. yet, paul is such a maven.. if jesus couldn't be bothered to actually reveal what he was all about to his apostles with whom he ate, drank, spoke and slept---why this persecutor, saul?.
the apostles heard every word jesus spoke and were willing to die for him.. paul didn't--yet--miraculously explained every detail of the entire history of god's purpose including his messiah.. .
can anybody provide a non-gimmick answer?.

Paul mentioned Jesus' death, burial and resurrection and subsequent appearance to many eyewitnesses in 1 Cor 15:3-8.
3 For I handed on to YOU , among the first things, that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; 4 and that he was buried, yes, that he has been raised up the third day according to the Scriptures; 5 and that he appeared to Ce´phas, then to the twelve. 6 After that he appeared to upward of five hundred brothers at one time, the most of whom remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep [in death]. 7 After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8 but last of all he appeared also to me as if to one born prematurely.
To Christians, Jesus' death and resurrection are even more important than his ministry and whatever miraculous deeds he accomplished.

Discovering Mortality
by pirata inmost of my life i never gave thought to my mortality because i'd be petting a lion forever in the new system.
my hobby could wait because i would have time to pursue it as a perfect being in a paradise.
dying was not a huge deal because i'd wake up in a paradise earth.. then i woke up.

Before I became a JW I did believe in some kind of God (although not strictly based on the Bible), and always hoped that this life wasn't all there was.
As a JW I believed that I'd live in paradise somewhere (I often wished I could choose where my modest home would be, I didn't want any elder picking my lot).
I think now after waking up, I still believe in God. I do realize that maybe parts of his Word - the Bible have changed, or it doesn't reflect the supernatural's true character. But since most of the universe remains a mystery, I feel that there's someone out there who is looking out for me and you and has a good plan for us, somewhere (heaven, earth, unknown matter/anti-matter), wherever really..
If God's truly love, that's just my sincere opinion.
