Mad Sweeney and Shador - you have PMs.
And I agree... it was not a gray area in the slightest. And I doubt ANY of the ones who were appointed under that mentality have since been deleted. It makes me sick to my stomach.
it is a known fact that on average a pedophile will abuse as many as 200 children in his/her lifetime.. with that in mind.
read an extract from an august 1, 1995 letter to all bodies of elders in the usa.. i guess these untrained elders are somehow experts in this area and can determine if someone will reoffend even though law enforcement, psychiatrists and specialists cannot offer the same guarantee and in many cases will even suggest that these known sex offenders are very likely to reoffend when the opportunity presents itself.... to all bodies of elders in the united states.

TO ALL BODIES OF ELDERS IN THE UNITED STATES
August I, 1995
"It would be appropriate to talk very frankly to a former child abuser, strongly cautioning
him as to the dangers of hugging or holding children on his lap and that he should never be in the
presence of a child without another adult being present. This may prevent putting that one in the
way of temptation or unfounded accusation. At the same time, it is good to remember that the
Bible, at Matthew 12:31 and I Corinthians 6:9-11, shows it is possible for a person to stop his or
her wrongful course, repent, and thereafter live in harmony with God's righteous standards. This
is true of all wrongdoers-s-even a former child abuser.
While it is unscriptural to say that a former child abuser could never enjoy exemplary
privileges of service in the congregation, certainly the elders will want to be very cautious, especially
when one had repeatedly engaged in this kind of wrongdoing or had been disfellowshipped
for such an offense. Before extending privileges, therefore, it is necessary that one would meet
the qualification of having a fine testimony from individuals inside and outside the congregation.
This means that he must have lived down the reproach which resulted from his wrongdoing.
Generally, it will take a considerable number of years to achieve such irreprehensibility
depending on the notoriety involved. So it would be up to the elders to determine whether such a
one is extended privileges, taking into account all factors in each individual case. (J Tim. 3:7)
At any rate, this should never be done hastily. Considerable time should always pass before a
former child abuser is used, if ever."
If makes me sick that there is even a CHANCE that such a person could serve in the congregation. It's terrible.
i have been following steven unthank's case in australia and it got me to wondering about the laws in canada.
so, i sent a letter to the canadian centre for child protection to find out if religious leaders in canada are required to undergo any type of criminal child abuse registry check.
i am a caretaker for a building and my husband and i had to have these checks done, so it makes sense the 'elders' would have to as well.
Okay, well the Canadian Centre for Child Protection just told me to call a 'Jehovah's Witness church' and ask them what their process is. So I wrote them back and said I already did that and there really isn't much of a 'process' in place.
Then I contacted the government of Canada directly through the provincial website and I asked them if there are any laws in place. I am awaiting their reply.
I will let you know what happens.
on the suggestion of the office of public prosecutions, mr steven unthank made application to the magistrate that the case be transferred to the summary stream and listed as a summary mention on 11 october 2011.. .

I think I must be very ignorant of the law, very n aïve and shamefully uninformed... but if Steven Unthank is doing this in Australia... what is being done in Canada? Are there not enough of us to stop talking and start DOING something?
I guess none of us really know what to do or else we just kind of figure that 'someone else who knows about that is already doing something'.
If someone in Canada IS doing something OR if you WANT to do something can we connect?
So far, I have contacted Child and Protective Services to inquire what the laws are. I have children who are in the line of fire. Am I the only one?
I think, at the very least, anyone who is allowed to go door-to-door should be obligated to get a criminal and child abuse registry check.
Thoughts?

i have tons of elders letters which were part of a website about 7 years ago and if my memory proves correct it was taken down due to bullying by the society.. i was wondering if these letters were still out there somewhere, because if not i'll upload them.
they are all in catergories.
might be useful.
2006 - 2010 anywhere to be found? PM me please!
i like to think that i'm perfectly rational at all times.. so in the interest of making myself more awesome i'd like to admit to and try to to fix a prejudice i think i may have.
but i'd also like to make sure it's not grounded in reality.. .
so earlier i saw a story about a woman who killed her baby in the microwave.
Did you guys get a load of that kidnapper/pedophile, Randall Hopley? Aye yi yi! He's one nasty looking dude.
(He is a convicted sex offender who abducted a little three year old boy, Kienan Hebert, last week. In a bizarre twist, he actually returned the little guy to his home unharmed :)...
But seriously UGLY!

Are there PDFs of previous years' BOE letters? (prior to 2011?)

do other churches have "no trespassing" signs on the grounds?.
i don't recall ever seeing "private property - no trespassing" signs on other churches, especially ones that have a priest or minister available at all hours, or ones that offer space for community services or other kinds of events.. i wonder whether there is some kind of legal expectation of a charitable organization that pays no taxes to offer access for community services in order to maintain their tax free status.. anyone else ever see signs like this on kh property?.
This is interesting because my husband drove by our old Kingdom Hall complex just yesterday and noticed a big metal gate installed across the entrance to the parking lot. It's brand new - just installed in the past week or so. We were wondering about that too. It's in more of a residential area so it's not like parking is at a premium so it's unlikely it's an issue of people using the lot... It's the type of gate that has wheels along the bottom so it can be moved for the meetings and then put back in place when the hall is not in use.
I wonder what's up?
life is short and i regret the years i have wasted.
i feel like crying over the damage i have caused my kids by raising them in a cult.
but i really honestly believed all of it.
Life is short and I regret the years I have wasted. I feel like crying over the damage I have caused my kids by raising them in a cult. But I really honestly believed all of it. I thought that the reason it didn't work for me - in 37 years - was because I was, in a word 'BAD'. For my kids, I am trying to cause the least amount of damage possible to them now. I am just waiting to get them out when they are ready. And as I said before, my son who is almost 15 already said he does not believe any of it...
But it's so hard!
I want to spring into 'rescue my babies' mode! Get away from those hurtful people, please!
And I don't know how to be normal for our little guy... he is only ONE. What is a normal childhood in this day and age? I love the idea of family get togethers and traditions, but the idea of Santa Claus or birthday candles or trick-or-treating is still really not appealing to me... is there a way to find a middle ground and kind of be trend setters in this regard? I mean, there must be other parents who for various reasons are non-religious and non-conformist and who reject that sort of thing... I mean, what about those who have immigrated from other countries? How do they integrate their kids?
Just so confused, overwhelmed and yes... sleepy... ah yes~! The answer: sleep
