  Are JW's a Social Experiment ?

  when a person looks at the sheer volume of watchtower lies, denial of salvation, free labor, false prophecies, misrepresentations, gas-lighting and falsehoods about everything and anything, it makes me wonder if it's one big test to see how gullible people can be.

  there was as social experiment in the 1960's that tested how far people were willing to administer an increasing dose of electric shock if directed to do so by an authority figure.

  shockingly, people were willing to give lethal doses to their neighbors.

  JWs can toast now….what’s next

  so you can see from multiple topics here (& elsewhere), based on gb update #4, jws now have permission to toast.. there’s been a boatload of “xyz is now allowed” over the past couple of years….beards, no ties in field service or at the kh, sister can wear pants at the kh & in field service…... what do you think is next?.

  a lot of folks are speculating on birthday celebrations being allowed, and i agree that will eventually come, but i don’t think it is next.

  too big of a jump.. heres my guess:.

  so you can see from multiple topics here (& elsewhere), based on gb update #4, jws now have permission to toast.. there’s been a boatload of “xyz is now allowed” over the past couple of years….beards, no ties in field service or at the kh, sister can wear pants at the kh & in field service…... what do you think is next?.

  a lot of folks are speculating on birthday celebrations being allowed, and i agree that will eventually come, but i don’t think it is next.

  Just watched it, and I think she’s spot-on; WT reps would absolutely sour the deals (they probably had to make) by not participating in something that is, at its core, harmless.

  Hell, they probably did it plenty of times in the past*, but in the Information Age, that kind of thing is damn near impossible to keep on the down-low, so they tried to get ahead of it.

  …

  *Not unlike having to swear allegiance in order to obtain a passport? Or acquiring NGO status to make missionary work a little easier? Or flipping on organ transplants because maybe a GB member needed one?

  Thing is, no leader should expect their followers to obey instructions that they themselves wouldn’t…

  What Did You Do For Fun That You Felt The WT Frowned Upon?

  in the light of the lifting of sanctions on glass clinking and recent threads on chess and dvds of lord of the rings, was there anything you did for fun, as a hobby or for recreational purposes that you felt might be "taken the wrong way" if it came to the attention of the elders or sister busybody?.

  That’s part of it.

  A bigger reason, however, is that any position of authority in that environment (even a low-level one) effectively insulates them from ever having to be told they’re wrong.

  Trust me, it matters…

  …I’ve lost count of how many times I ran into guys in that position who went completely apeshit when that happened; these guys just fucking hated it.

  The vast majority of members are too conditioned and afraid to tell ‘em that, and the few that do (particularly if they’re young) are disciplined under the broad-spectrum label of “rebelliousness”, and - more importantly - anything they say is disregarded, even if it’s right.

  That sort of thing doesn’t happen outside of authoritarian, hyper-conservative groups.

  he asked why we have them over for dinner....we are not disfellowshiped just faded away so we can still have dinner with witness friends now we have known for 10 years.

  alot of "faders" do same.

  you might listen to afew dumb scriptures from them but still friends..

  Folks like that often automatically (and even subconsciously) gravitate towards high-control groups specifically because they perceive that those environments readily allow for and enable that.
