I'm not sure about "The Best", but definitely some of the good ones are gone. I have made some seriously bad decisions because of being a Witness. I have missed plenty of opportunities to learn and experience life.
But, I have lots of time left, if I can only get out the way I want to...soon and with as much of my family as possible.

"The Disfellowshipped Are Dead To Us"
by dontplaceliterature ini had a conversation with a friend previously mentioned on this forum.. http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/members/private/206541/1/dinner-with-one-of-my-best-and-most-liberal-jw-friends.
we were speaking about a mutual friend who was disfellowshipped, and i mentioned that i missed them and wondered if they were okay because it wasn't like disfellowshipped people were dead to us...and he immediately responded "oh yes they are!".
this is really out of his character to say.

I left out a key detail:
His brother has been reinstated for some time. He confided in me his anger with that particular BOE, even to this day. He in-no-way-shape-or-form feels they made an appropriate decision in the case of his brother. Apparently, the BOE where his brother resided out-of-state also got involved in contacting The Branch because they felt he was qualified for reinstatement, but could not get the consent from the original JC that kicked him out. The elders who disfellowshipped his brother had their hands forced to reinstate him, or so the story goes. I don't know how much of it is true. People tend to exaggerate things that emotionally affect them, especially when they feel justified in their position.

This is really out of his character to say. He usually is pretty tender. It was like he was a different person for that split second. But, it goes to show that Steve Hassen's description of the cult-personality and and real-personality changability is totally true. His face was visably tense, his tone of voice changed, etc.
The goofy part is, that this same guy wrote countless letters to The Branch about the wrongful disfellowshipment of his brother. Didn't he trust the Holy Spirit to guide the Elders?
Which brings up another issue: This past weekend at the DC, a speaker spoke of how the angels directed the disfellowshipping arrangement. He said that by the time the elders made their decision, the angels had already directed them about the persons fate. This got my blood boiling.
I'm not sure that any literature actually says that the elders can make mistakes in Judicial Decisions, but I know for sure I have heard brothers admit this from the platform on more than one occasion, falling back on the "imperfect men" excuse, and saying that we had to trust in Jehovah to take care of things in his own time.
Good grief....what is wrong with these people.....

Very though provoking, SIAM. I'm a big fan of this analogy, too!

Went to the DC today...
by dontplaceliterature ini caught the entire session today, and strangely, it was the first time i was able to stay completely alert for an entire dc program.
i'm guessing the reason for that is that i was looking at the program with a critical eye for the first time in my life and was not being hypnotised by mind-numbing repitition (see steve hassen's combatting cult mind control).
the program wasn't that bad.

The program wasn't THAT bad. The afternoon drama started off slightly realistic and then steadily got more over-the-top as it went along. My wife and I got a good laugh out of the fact that the voice-over for the youngest kid (Nick?) sounded like it was a 5 or 6 year old. The kid they had playing the part looked to be about 12 or 13. I bet he felt rediculous.
The rest of the program was mostly the same crap about materialism and "us vs them" propaganda...the world is in darkness, the world is lost, the world is wicked and dangerous...etc.
Two things stood out to me today (besides the mention of JWs being a Cult in the drama, and the Symposium part about Apostates, both of which have already been heavily commented on):
1. There was a lady who gave an experience about being an Atheist and then converting to being a Jehovah's Witness after studying with a co-worker who was new in "The Truth". She said she realized it was the truth because once she started studying, she started having problems with the demons. She didn't give any details regarding her demonic experiences, but she referred to them as "attacks". And she said that she assumed there must be a god if there are other invisible creatures that could influence her.
BULLSHIT. Demons are a figment of the imagination. What are the chances that she started having problems with "demons" because she started hearing about them from her Study Conductor, and had never heard about them before from her family (who she said were atheists as well). I have never in my life heard a story about a demonic encounter from anyone who wasn't already off their rocker . She looked pretty messy on stage for a District Convention. It's pretty rare for a sister to get a "privilege" like that, and they normally dress to the nines. She definitely had a few ounces of crazy running through her veins.
2. There was a sister who griped during a demo that her teenagers were not yet baptized.
This is obviously rediculous. By the way, there were 19 baptized out of 6500ish today. Only 4 or 5 of them were adults from what I could see.
