University after leaving the Watchtower?

hello, you sexy sassy posters of jwn.

i'm starting this thread in the hopes of finding... uh, hope.... and sharing it with others who are in a similar boat.

i'm looking for input from anyone who meets the following criteria:.

maksym

raised by devout JWs
skipped university after high school due to WT propaganda
got married and had one or more kids
woke up later and left the WT
decided to invest in a real university education
not made of time or money

All of the above applies to me

What was your overall goal? (Education for the intrinsic value of knowledge alone, career opportunities, satisfaction of obtaining a degree, etc...)

My Goal was the educational value, career opportunities and obtaining a degree. All of these fulfills a sense of accomplishment in many ways.

What major and level of degree were/are you seeking?

Seeking a Bachelors degree

Did you get the degree you wanted? Or are you still working on it?

Still working on my degree at this time. I'm in my third year now.

Were you able to balance time with family, work, and school without going crazy?

Yes, I am single at present and my child is fully growth and living independently. I snatched the opportunity when layed off of work.

What sacrifices did you have to make, if any? Was it worth it?

Mostly time and I needed to schedule studies in. I needed also to change my spending habits as being full time does not allow for a lot of work.

It's a great investment and well worth the effort put into it.

evolution question

Examples of Bias/Discrepancies in the New World Translation

to be fair, translating the bible is a huge undertaking, and in doing so, there are bound to be mistakes, or even limits to a committee's knowledge.

obviously, we cannot read the hearts of the four translators of the new world translation committee to know when they consciously or subconsciously altered renderings in to support doctrinal bias.

but more and more, i do come across things that feel askew to me.

NWT of John 1:1 is horrendous.

Inserting the "a" is just purely biased to their theology.

If Jesus is A god who worships him? If Jesus is A god, then is he a good god or bad god? Why are there two gods when there should only be one? What a rathole they've created with that one.

i saw a few mindlessly working a neighborhood as i was driving the other day.

they looked so unhappy, just walking in baby steps, looking like zombies..

I feel sorry for them.

I pray for them and if the occasion arises I show love for them as human beings. They are trapped and lost in an alternate universe without a clue as to what they've gotten themselves into.

It's taken a couple of years but I have no fear anymore from them. I have true peace in my path.

How can anyone believe in a theory. It's just not scientific at all.

The theory then becomes biased from the beginning and one sets out to prove their beliefs in said theory. If one remains neutral then the casual obverver remains neutral and one is focused on getting the correct answer.

Science is meant to be unbiased and without beliefs. It is set forth to be neutral and empirical. Establishing a theory as fact of any kind is meant to be driven by empirical suport whether true or false, without belief, religion, or philosophy involved.

Evolution : Where are we headed to

this is topic is to discuss where we are headed as humans as far as evolution is concerned.

All I know is that evolution is still JUST a theory, and I'm referring to macro evolution.

Yet people will adamently support a theory as if it is a religion to them. Evolution seems to be tied to philosophical beliefs whether one likes it or not.

I am one that has taken a huge number of classes in Universities and I'm educated in biology, paleontology, geology and so forth, but the theory just has too many holes in it to be valid or accepted as actual fact. Yet it is taught as such and driven into the system.

I believe the WT corporation has done a vast injustice in supporting intelligent design. Most of their support is erroneous and lacking proper support.

I could just as easily say that my theory is that aliens of a higher order altered the course of life and the natural processes on earth, and made changes into the natural order to create humans and other species of a higher order on this planet. Who is to say we are so smart as to understand the mechanics of another species far beyond ours. But those ideas are absurd for the mainstream and are not taught in schools. I also don't believe in that theory either but there are those that do.

For those in college and universities my advice is not to trade in one institution, (the WT corporation) with another, namely secular thought and the model of science.

It is too easy to veiw empirical evidence and scientific hypothesis as the answer to things we seek about ourselves.

The scientific model today has replaced the Roman Catholic church in the middle ages as the authority for understanding all things. Neither is completely equipped to deal with our worldview on their own. Our life and the universe is just too complex to reliquish everything to any one system.

Philosophy breaks the barriors. I advice everyone that is contemplating a quick run at believing in any system to take courses in philosophy for a more mature foundation before forming an opinion.

also how long was he here before he returned to jehovah in heaven ?.

He was resurrected as a man, in the flesh. There was no body for the romans to find; He made a point to eat and drink with His disciples; and Thomas could touch him. I don't know how long he remained after that. (I think it might say forty days somewhere) But He did remain for a while to appear to his brothers and sisters.
Then as he ascended to heaven, he 'shed the flesh' and became spirit once again. (because flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom - 1Corinthians 15:50)

Dear Tammy,
I have a different take on that scripture. I believe Jesus was referring to human nature in its weakened and imperfect condition as to the reference of flesh and blood. Since the Fall, this condition of men then could not be taken into the Heavenly realms. Flesh and blood in this scripture I feel is symbolic and not literal.
I don't believe Jesus "shed" anything. I believe He still has His glorified body. His two natures, fully God and fully man are still together for all eternity. This is the mystery that baffles even the angels.

I don't believe Jesus ever was an angel but is the second person of the Holy Trinity. Jesus took on our fallen nature, being made a little lower than the angels. Once He died, He rose again in glory with a glorified physical body. This gives us an example of our resurrection at the end of the age. All in Christ receive a glorified body. Christ's body transcends into the heavens now and for all eternity. There will be different views on this as noted, but the most bizzarre ones are from the Mormons and Watchtower literature.

Well, if this is true then they must also account for the world population growth.

In 2010 it was approximately 1.3 percent

Therefore the real figure is 1.1 percent growth overall.

I'm not sure what it is in 2011 but the world is expected to reach 7 billion

7 billion divided by 7395672 is 946 people willing to hear per corporate member this crazy message

I don't think about them anymore than any other leaders of a religion. I don't think about the current prophet for the Mormon religion, nor do I care about the next.
