one the how many exbethelites thread it was mentioned that some think one either leaves down the path towards apostasy or as a 100% true believer.

i'm curious what experiences did you face at bethel that woke you up (or started to at least)?.

they excuse it by saying, it's ok since at least they were on the watch.. i believe they should think about god's view of watchmen who constantly gave false pronouncements.

they would be judged accordingly by god!.

Contributions ,how the Society CONTROLS the funds of a congragation

i'm not sure if anyone has started a post about contributions recently ,but if there is an accounts servant here please free to correct me or shed some more light .what i'm about to say is 100% accurate and applies to congragations in britain (don't ask me how just ...join the dots).

the society controls all the funds that are coming in the kingdom hall all of the time .the way this works out is as follows :you put any money in any of the contribution boxes and in the end all money are added to together and deposited to the congragation's bank account .the worldwide donations leave the account as a direct debit to the society every week and the rest stays in the account .now comes the interesting bit :once the account goes over 5000 we are instructed to send the rest to the society as a cheque and is held in their account for as long as the congragation doesn't needed back .this way all but 5000 are held in the society's account .any other experiences ?.

I read a thread like this and feel my blood boiling—and I left this organization more than two years ago. Phizzy is right to say “the average JW trusts that all is above board and honest.” I certainly did when I was a Witness. After all, I knew about the scams, money grubbing, money laundering and risky investments that “worldly” religions engaged in, thanks in part to discussion about them in the pages of The Watchtower and Awake! All of that was roundly condemned in the literature and while the WTS never said directly that it didn’t practice these things, it strongly implied that its hands were clean and all its operations were transparent.

I wonder what would happen if, at the annual board meeting each congregation is supposed to hold, some publisher stood up and demanded a full accounting and examination of collection and disbursement of congregation funds. What would happen if this inquiry went further and someone also demanded to know what role the Society itself had in congregation operations or the secret accounts set up to allow the Society free and unhindered use of the congregation’s own money. Like as not, given the mental state of the average Witness, nothing would be said. But it would be interesting to have the discussion.

For Star Wars™ to have a successful revival, I firmly believe that George Lucas must have no significant input. He has shown that his talents do not work for the complexity this mythos deserves. I thought all along that the idea of having prequels was a bad one. Yes, they do tell the backstory, but real creativity isn’t needed since you simply “fill in the blanks” the original films had.

No, the direction to go with Star Wars™ is forward, not backward. That takes real talent and I can only hope Disney will see it that way. We don’t need to dwell on the past, but look to the future. I think one way of doing this harks back to the reaction of Cicero upon learning of the assassination of Julius Caesar: “The tyrant is dead but tyranny still lives.” The death of the Emperor doesn’t necessarily mean that the Republic would be reconstituted and everyone would live happily ever after. There would be other personalities ready and willing to move into the void created by the Emperor’s death and sit on his throne.

There is also the possibility that the Emperor’s “aura” survived the death of his body in much the same way that Obi Wan Kenobi’s did. That opens the door to all kinds of machinations he could engage in. I only hope that Lucas really and truly at least will be marginalized if not thrown under the bus so that Star Wars™ can move forward.

A closer look at the origins and times of Pastor C.T.Russell

charles taze russell was born into a time and place in history when america was rife with failed ideas, movements and philosophies about mankind's destiny.

america had been founded by mostly puritan perfectionists and other zealots chased out of europe for troublemaking and fanatical hard-headedness about god's purposes for them.. the first effort of puritan colonists was to bring about god's kingdom through hard work, self-improvement and human institutions which would raise mankind up little by little to perfection in jesus christ.. this was seen to have failed by the middle 1800's and a new approach was needed.. a rural, self-taught farmer from a baptist heritage named william miller filled the need.

using just his wits, sincerety and a bible and concordance, miller searched the scriptures and his neighbor's libraries for the answer.. miller's research led him to the unshakeable conclusion that jesus christ would return sometime in 1843. miller polished his arguments and began a preaching circuit to churches around america's most fervent centers of christian enthusiasm.

Once again, I tip my hat to Terry and thank him for his research on this vital topic. How different this picture is from the one seen in official Witness hagiography. I hope that more information will be included because this outline has piqued my interest to uncover other details which the powers-that-be in Brooklyn would prefer to remain buried.

Returning to school at age 45

not the university, mind you... just taking some classes so i can spend the last 20 years of my secular life doing something other than golf course irrigation.

a fellow at the golf course has talked me in to getting my real estate license.. .

so, off to school i go.

Hey, DOC, people often held the door open for me when I was a student at the university as well. I took it in the spirit it was given: a sign of deep respect and real affection. Some of those door-holders became very close personal friends who later invited me to their weddings and shared their lives with me. I was also called “sir” more times than I can count, but again I took that as a sign of respect. These same young people were on cloud nine when I told them to drop the formality and refer to me by my first name instead. Again, that led to the creating of friendships that have lasted down to this day. It’s all in our attitude and I learned early on in college not to take myself seriously. The result was a happier college experience than it might have been had I viewed matters otherwise.

DATA-DOG , I wanted to add this post script to my earlier reply. It is a wonderful thought from George Eliot which I hope you will adopt and follow. She wrote: “It is never too late to be what you might have been.”

I went back to college while in my forties and six years later earned my degrees in geography and mathematics. It was too late to have a career in either field, but I never ever regretted earning my diploma because it transformed my life for the better. George Eliot was right and I am now the person I wanted to be.

That was an interesting post, DATA-DOG, very interesting. You say you would like to further your education. I applaud that. What do you want to learn or study? I know you didn’t take the time to think about that in your youth, but do that now and see what you come up with. Then, when you’re ready, I’d suggest that you get in touch with the local community college to see what courses they offer to further your goal.

Community colleges offer wonderful classroom experiences. The instructors are usually very competent and love to teach. The class sizes are small. The cost is much lower than a standard four-year institution and the classes are often taught at hours that are very convenient for working people.

After I dropped out of college, I stayed away for more than seventeen years. When I decided to complete my education, I started at a community college. It was the best move I could have made and one that enabled me to eventually get the degree I wanted. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck!
