i have some questions about nathan knorr, the third president (1942-1977) of the wtbts.
accurate answers are welcome.. 1) how did it come about that knorr was made president of the wtbts in 1942 after the death of joseph rutherford?
rutherford as we know was an usurper inheritor of russell's wtbts in late 1916 after russell went to his reward.
I'd like to add that even though this thread was started ten years ago, it is still relevant. The history recounted here calls to mind Solomon's statement at Ecclesiastes 1:15, "That which is made crooked cannot be made straight, and that which is wanting cannot possibly be counted." It is no wonder the WTS is so fouled up!

This has been an absolutely fascinating reading experience. I no longer have any of my WTS Yearbooks, but I recall how the 1975 edition all but canonized both Russell and Rutherford, never hinting at their abnormal behaviors and lifestyles. As for Nathan Knorr, much depends on whom you consult. I knew a Witness who attended the same congregation meetings as Knorr did and she thought he was warm, open, and very friendly. On the other hand, I have read reports from Bethelites who served under his watch in Brooklyn who had very little to say about him that was positive. I have definitely appreciated what others have shared on this thread and hope that others read it as well, especially in view of what direction the WTS is taking now.

This is a very interesting development if it is true. Considering the layoffs going on worldwide, the closing of branch offices, and the slowdown of the work in many countries, refocusing Gilead would be a logical step. Of course, the WTS will put a positive spin on this if and when they make an official annoucement about ending the missionary work. Gilead has been a fixture for the WTS for nearly 70 years going back to its founding in February 1943. So shutting down the missionary school would be a huge change. Training COs to assist troubled congregations would be an admission that many of them are in spiritual decline. None of this can be seen as good news to the Governing Body. As for abandoning New York City for the green fields of upstate, that has been in the works for years. The sale of Brooklyn properties would create a cash windfall for the Society, enabling it to weather the drop in donations. Well, we'll have to see what does happen and how it is presented to the rank and file.

How I wish there was a way of getting this information out to the rank and file! I like to believe the effect on the organization would be catastrophic, but maybe that is simply wishful thinking on my part. Still, it's hard to see how this couldn't have a significant impact on the WTS. That is why I believe its strategy will be to "lay low and keep dark," quoting Mark Twain because, to quote another aphorism, it would be much better "to let sleeping dogs lie."
I suppose the best any of us can do is to download the Mason and Jonsson pdf files and be ready to share them with any and all who want further information. I very much doubt that any active or sincere Witness would ever approach an outsider for more information. The risk would be too great unless they took the course of the Pharisee Nicodemus and asked us to share with them secretly. And then the problem would be what to do with the information? Would any be bold or courageous enough to share it with others?

i have just read the first ever post here made by simon in march 2000.. http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/46/1/welcome.
i wanted to ask, was this forum originaly created for active jw's to discuss study ideas and encouraging points from the watchtower, etc?.
if so, when did it start accepting non jw's and exjw's?.
Did Simon ever post "Part 2" of his story? I found the first part engrossing.

here's a nice, positive, uplifting song from the jehovah's witnesses' "sing to jehovah" song book.
my favorite part is at 1:30.

It was the fact that I could no longer sing the kingdom songs that convinced me that I had to leave the WTS behind forever. I discovered that I didn't believe in the lyrics and so had no reason to attend meetings again.

no, i'm not seeking to be reinstated so don't worry.
but i did want to raise a point in relation to this.
i know this was true in my case and i've seen it in others i have talked to about this.
The Society's own figures show that only one-third of those who are disfellowshipped or disassociate themselves ever return. That is a damning statistic if ever there was one about how fruitless and unloving the entire judicial arrangement is. When I pointed this out to my judicial committee, they could say nothing in rebuttal and looked very uncomfortable. I want to say that I especially appreciated what 00Dad has shared with us. It amazes me that the WTS has persisted in this practice despite the overwhelming evidence of its ineffectiveness. Furthermore, there is the corrosive effect that engaging in it has had on everyone involved: the elders, the applicants for reinstatement, their friends and families, and others. Surely it can see what 00Dad has called the travesty and hypocrisy that is involved.
I think the reason it has kept the disfellowshipping procedures in place is because of the power and control it gives the organization over the rank and file. All the talk about upholding divine standards and keeping the congregation clean is simply a smokescreen for the organization's real agenda. Magwitch raises another valid point when she says that the Society acknowledges that peer pressure and the desire for association are major factors in the decision to seek reinstatement. But as is so often the case with WTS practice, it strains out the gnat while gulping down the camel. The Society thinks that desire for contact with friends and family is the proper motivation for seeking to return to the organization whereas love for God and Christ shouldn't be a factor at all. Small wonder, then, that its recovery rate is so low. How unlike the example of real shepherding that Jesus Christ set.

I have enjoyed taking part in this thread and reading the commnets. To address Doubting Bro's point, I believe that combining the two arguments, theological and historical, is the way to attack this doctrine. That has been the approach I have taken when arguing this with the few Witnesses who will still talk to me. The combination is like a one-two attack in boxing and is very powerful. The looks of amazement and deafening silence that follow tell me that Witnesses are absolutely helpless when confronted this way. My reason for doing so is to get them to think again because it is clear that the WTS has robbed them of both their free will and thinking ability. If they recover those they can start the process of getting out of the cult.
I am so happy that both Doug Mason and Carl Jonsson have written convincing refutations of the WTS' false and specious articles on when Jerusalem was destroyed. They also expose the WTS as an organization with no integrity since it so freely quotes authorities out of context as well as points to additional historical sources to show that 607 BC cannot stand as the date of Jerusalem's destruction. When you add what the Bible itself actually does say, the conclusion is irresistable.

my sisters' funeral service was just appalling.
an absolute disgrace.. http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/medical/216561/1/my-sister-died-this-morning-after-refusing-blood-on-four-occasions.
the funeral was held today for my sister when every opportunity was used as a sales pitch to promote their malignant message, in this case to any non jw's that may be present, just like any other pyramid scam it seems.. the person whose funeral it is just has a minor bit part to play compared to the main feature , the promotion of the all encompassing multi-talented multi-tentacled wts that you can rely on to guide misguide and pervade every nook and cranny of your life including when to die.. and why not, because as gods only prophet to all mankind, they don't just hear gods voice, they are gods voice.. ***watchtower 1957 june 15 p.370*** "it is vital that we respond to the directions of the "slave" as we would to the voice of god.
First let me extend my sympathies for your loss, still wondering. I know you will miss your sister. I am sorry that the funeral/memorial service offered nothing in the way of comfort to you, but it is not surprising considering the source. I think the idea of having an alternate service or gathering for her is a good one. I have decided that I will not attend another Witness funeral or memorial service either. I don't want to endure the empty words and the lack of effort to comfort the mourning ones. I will offer my condolences in private and hope to provide some comfort and assitance that way.
