Best answer to "What prevents you from getting baptized?"

the nosy elder at the congregation i attend until i can get out very soon (just quickly: born in, was headed towards unbaptized pub but changed my mind about that and baptism) pulled me aside and showed me the scripture about coming across the body of water and asking "what prevents me from getting baptized" and i really want a quick, preferably smart-ass reply the next time he puts me on the spot like that.. .

What prevents you from getting baptized?

"I'm following Jesus example closely, and he wasn't baptized until he was 30 years old." (Assuming you are not 30 yet.) To think I am better than Jesus would seem to be presumptuous.......

You did ask for a "smart ass" reply, right?

More politically correct reply: "Jesus said you must [serve] God with our whole heart, soul, strength, and mind....and am not able to say with good conscience that I can truly do that just yet.....but it is the goal I am striving to achieve.:

What do they get out of this?

maybe this has been discussed before but i'm starting to wonder why it is so important for wts to keep such a tight control over its members?.

is it because the gb and other folk in upper management are so delusional and psychotic, that they believe in the rubbish they spout?.

or is someone somewhere getting something (financially) out of this?.

What do they get out of this?

I really think their formost motive is still sincerity. THEY BELIEVE!

Look at the atrocities committed in Nazi Germany by "good" people. THEY BELIEVED!

BTW -- No offense to people of German heritage. ALL nations teach their soldiers that it is "good" to kill people on the "other side", and they do it. Oh, and the clergy praise them for it. Oh, and JWs do it too, they just call it Disfellowshipping, knowing that God will eventually kill you (they don't want to go to jail).

In either case, JW or soldier:

You're fed a steady diet of propaganda and YOU BELIEVE.

All the other junk food is cut out eventually and YOU BELIEVE WITH CONVICTION!

You're convinced to do things that you don't really want to do (door to door; 15k trecks with backpacks) because it's for the common good and to support "the cause"; and because it proves YOU BELIEVE; and because it comes from someone with a higher rank (even God) and there will be ramifications if you DON'T do it; (100 pushups or birds eating your eyeballs)

You're proud when you're tapped on the shoulder and given a "higher rank" (Sgt. or MS) because you've been given commendation, because you've been seen as superior, because YOU have been given a gift -- a new privlege -- by those above (even God); proving that WHAT YOU BELIEVE IS RIGHT.

You step up you're pace; you're more motivated; you've seen the personal "blessings" that come from performing at a higher level than your peers

You're promoted again (Capt Elder); more recognition (from God), more commendation, more PROOF (from God) to BELIEVE that you are doing the right thing; better grade and more propaganda (only for the upper class officers)

You have higher authority (from God), even having to punish (reprove) a few weak people -- it will ultimately save their lives when they are in combat on the "front lines"; you have to execute a few bad ones even (DF), but you have been given (by God) authority to judge (JC), and YOU BELIEVE YOU DO IT WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS, and it will save a more other innocent lives.

AND SO IT GOES..............

It works the same way all the way up through Bethel, Gilead, CO, DO, Branch, and even GB, and eventually HEAVEN (for the finest few). I think they TRULY BELIEVE they've been handpicked through each and every level all the way to the top (still waiting on the Heaven level) and everything they do, every decision they make, thery thought they have IS FROM GOD! Yes, THEY BELIEVE IT!

MOST HERE WERE ON THIS TREADMILL. You witnessed it. YOU BELIEVED!

And I'd suspect most? or many? would have kept on believing if something or someone hadn't kicked you (or caused you to fall) off of the treadmill.

Special day Last talk "No formula"

this weekend at our special assembly day, let gods will take place the final talk was a head shaker.... the bethel speaker was quite entertaining when he joked @ the shortcomings of the elders.

he also made us laugh with the comment "we were told the end of the system is right around the corner, but we've found its been more than that, we've been around the blocks a few times.

" he told the young ones to make the truth their own by researching in the wtbts publication (only).

Nope no where near there. So that tells me that it was from a talk outline and is from the wt directly and not some lone Woodchuck.

My doubting friend's cong is the "host" cong for the upcoming assembly and the CO & DO were visiting. From what she relayed to me, the DO's talk to the cong was nearly word for word from what was quoted here. Plus, a statement something like:

.....we thought those who were 10 years old in 1914 and witnessed the beginning of the last days would live to see Armageddon. But how old would they be now? (2011-1904=107) Dead. Thus, we realize that we need to readjust our understanding of what Jesus meant about "this generation".....

OH. We need to adjust our understanding of this prophecy.

(Amos 3:7) . . .For the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will not do a thing unless he has revealed his confidential matter to his servants the prophets. . .

I think it's loving and compassionate to let them know of this adjustment so they can plan their lives accordingly.

Oops! THEY'RE DEAD!

Who is WT "channeling"?

when wt claims to get their "instructions" and "holy messages" through "channeling"....who are they supposedly contacting?

do they say jesus is directing the org, or do they get their orders from the horses mouth jehovah?.

how exactly do they "channel"?

Mass defection possible?

there are many of us who are trapped within the religion and are looking at leaving.

i was wondering..... if there was an organized and well publicized effort to leave the organization en-masse on a certain date yet to be determined, how many do you think would participate?.

one person leaves the org and it creates a small ripple.

I would love to throw the towel in if shunning were abolished

If they changed their view on shunning this week, they could change it back next week.

Many who DAd themselves did so at the time when it just made you equivalent to a "man of the world" or to someone who was never a JW, thus no shunning. Shortly after the Ray Franz defection the WT$ policy changed so that anyone who DAd was treated the same as someone DFd for "wickedness".

Overlapping generation segment on the new Circuit Assembly program

so there i was at the circuit assembly sunday morning with my eyes glazed over as usual when all of a sudden, bam!

a demo with two brothers talking about the new overlapping generation teaching.

the reason it took me by surprise was because it occured during the second talk of the sunday morning symposium, "sanctify god's name by your speech".

"Then they reviewed their convention notes and now everything is crystal clear" - What? Are they kidding?!? It didn't make sense the first time, but when they reviewed the brother's notes it became "crystal clear".

It became crystal clear once they were informed that they were about to be disfellowshipped for apostacy (just believing doctrine contrary to what the WTS teaches is apostacy, it does not mean one has to advocate or teach different doctrine).
