This weekend will be my son's first birthday party ever. He will be seven. We are really over doing it, but we are so excited for him. He has had a N64 for about 3 years. I want to surprise him with a new system. I'm thinking Gamecube. Any advice from you gamers out there? Is SP2 better , X box? I really dunno. I DO know that gamecube is $50 less. But what do YOU think? Please help. Consider age too. Thanks.

Hi Spice, I love your posts!
That said.... I have to say that Ms. Amos depresses the hell out of me. I'm not begrudging her talent. I recognize it, just don't get into it. Her lyrics bring me down man.... and it's not like I need "shiny, happy " music. I dunno maybe it's that shrill voice, maybe I should revisit and see if I've grown into it. Maybe I saw the pic of her breastfeeding a piglet on her CD jacket and it CONFUSED me. Whatever.
I saw a "before they were stars" thing on her and I think I liked her better when she sang 80's anthem rock.:)

Crawdad says "yes, i was an asshole, the gov body was teaching me how to be unjust and cruel and unloving.......just like the pharisees."
And you bought it, hook ,line, and sinker, maybe you were weened on it like me, but you still bought it.
My point is: "Why be so hard on those who haven't left yet?" Is it not Pharisee - like to judge and accuse and berate them? I'm not talkin' GB, I'm talking people like you and me bro. Most of us here believed it just as we believed the sun would rise, but now that we have seen the REAL light we forget where we were before, and I think that is a shame.
I'm NOT saying you don't have the right to speak freely about how you feel, I'm just asking that you consider these facts, and that you don't hate me for doing the same.

If I may say so, "All Y'all is a TRIP!" I am truly amazed at the level of complete and utter crybaby bullshit I read on these types of threads.
Oh I have to say I see SOME points on all sides, but what pisses me off is how arrogant some have become against average JW's.
Crawdad says:".... the reason alot of jws are still jws,... is because their hearts are not "bothered" by the hypocrisy of the things they see going on around them....... they don't take a stand for truth and love. .........as soon as they take that stand, they are either kicked out, or they leave on their own............ no one who is in favor of truth and justice and love can remain one of jehovah's witnesses.............. they are sentenced to reap misery in the jw cult...... till they wise up............... they will reap what they sow, till they learn their lesson."
What about YOU Crawdad, and YOUR lot. You are so freakin' enlightened now it blows my undeserving mind. I just hope the rest of us can keep up with your ultra progressive pace!
How far you have come! When you were a JW you were a lying, unloving, unjust hypocrate. But NOW that you've left you have magically morphed into a wise man, who reads hearts, full of love and TRUTH! BARRRRF!
I'm not at all saying criticism isn't justified. But I think some of you need to look at the big picture: Ummm, like, umm, you WERE one,and like umm ,that makes you FORMER asshole?
In my opinion there is nothing worse than someone who has an unforgiving attitude toward people who have made the same mistakes and been misled in the same manner they have.

Top STUPID criticisms of the WTS
by JanH inthere are certainly enough valid criticisms of the wts and the jw religion, but a significant number of often-repeated criticisms of the religion are, imnsho, just ludicruous and serves to take attention away from the real issues.
significant problems with the wts includes, but are not limited to, the shunning policy, the blood issue and of course the corporate policy of hiding child molestors.. here is a list of criticisms of the wts that i find particularly annoying to see:.
russell was a freemason (or, even worse, the wts is part of some other large-scale conspiracy like the illuminati).

Larc, I think we will have to agree to disagree. I understand what you are saying, and your point is made. I still think "cult" in it's common definition, while not nessesarily the MOST correct description, is a word that can justifiably be used to describe JW's ( especially by those who lived as JW's formerly).
Jan -- Would the description "cult-like" be acceptable in your opinion? That actually is how I usually find myself describing them. I guess sometimes we are looking for one word to sum it all up and there just isn't one.

Larc, with all due respect, I think you are splitting hairs.
The question really amounts to , " Is it stupid to criticise JW's by defining them as a cult?" My opinion is no. There are many ways to define something, a dictionary is just one. In this case, books by sociologists may be another ( and it may be the most authoratative from a technical standpoint)
That said, the "common definition" that many hold must also be considered. And when you think about it, it may be the most important definition of all.
Ultimately words are defined by how PEOPLE commonly define them. What do people think of when they think of the word "cult"? Really that is the most important definition, though perhaps not completely accurate in a technical sense.
Cults: Isolate themselves, control people, replace peoples families, are extreme in their beliefs(blood, flags, politics, holidays, shunning, detruction of all opposers, devoted at the expence of nearly everything else). That's my, and dare I say, most peoples loose definition of cults
Of course this is only my humble opinion.

Great Post, as usual JanH.
I really like that you look at things with an open mind with reguard to the WTS. I agree with all of your points except where you think that the word "cult" is an inappropriate term. I think it fits like a glove.
From Dictionary.com:
5 entries found for cult.
True, it is an open ended definition. But when you consider the lifestyle, the seperate from the world stuff, the shunning stuff, the "us against the 'world' " stuff, the blood issue, the way they look down on education, the issues of authority and the power they wield in peoples lives, I don't think that word "cult" is out of line.cult Pronunciation Key (k
