Folks, listen I don't claim to have all of the answers and I really do try to really listen and contemplate views of people that are different from my own.

Some very interesting and valid points on all sides.

Obviously I've got some peoples juices flowin' here with the subject line I chose to use (I borrowed it from consevative pundits on the Fox News Channel).

If we have the resources and the manpower, why not?

In short, because we don't and never will. And because we don't have leagal authority to police the world.....I could go on and on, but not now.

I did not intend to belittle the Iraqis who have suffered while I sit in my"comfy" home. I think you missed my point there. WMD's were the cheif reason we were given as Americans for going to war. So where are they?

My feeling is that there is a difference between a dictator that is an imminent threat, and one that is a potential threat to US security and world peace.

True, but did you want to wait till it became imminent to YOU?

No not really, not from my "comfy living room". But that is my point If we have that view that we will remove all potential threats before they might maybe become real credible or imminent then we become the unilateral police of the world.

We went after Iraq, my friends, purely because we could.

Okay maybe not the best choice of words..we went after them because it was expeditious in reletive terms. They were weak militarily....which goes back to the veiw I have that they were not a real and credible threat to the US..at least not one that we couldn't contain.

Tell me this: Who was a bigger potential danger to us, N. Korea or Iraq? If your answer is .."well, N.Korea is next", than at least your honest.

No idea..but I will take your word on this one.
Okay that response puts things in perspective for me. (Duh, one has nukes that can reach our troops...one doesn't) -

North Korea is a little bit tougher though aren't they....not so easy.

Let me ask Yeru, being in the military he probably has a better grasp on that one than I do.

I think we use their evident intent as a point of reference., but the constitution is a living document. I think it was their intent to provide security for Americans. There lies the crux of the argument..was this war really about protecting Americans?

Cassi, did you read my entire post? Of course I'm glad Saddam is not in power any longer. I also wish I could snap my fingers and remove Kim Jong Il , my point was I still don't think we needed or should have gone to war.

Is that our role in this world to make the Iranians and Kurds "happy"? I know about the atrocities. There are many being perpetrated right now by other SOBs in the world. Again I ask , Is our role in this world to be the long arm of american law?

If your answer is yes then fine, when is the US going to 'democrafy' Syria, China, Cuba, Rawanda......Iran....oh wait we have to make them happy.

I personally still don't think we needed to go to war, EVEN THOUGH WE DID CAPTURE SADDAM, I know, I know, hard to believe.

Just think, If I had my way, Saddam would still be in power!!!! What was I thinking ? I mean he actually is a WMD incarnate. He is a walking, talking, mustachioed, WMD.

But I think I could still handle him ruling his little part of the world with our soldiers home and alive and with about 200 billion less in US debt and with more of our resources focused on OSAMA! Remember him?

So if you think our place in this world is to dispense American Justice and humanitarianism (according to our liking), then we are on the right track. But we must be consistant (except in Africa......or anyone that has nukes...or anyone that is our "ally" {Saudi Arabia} ......).

If we were allowed to "opt out" of Social Security, you can bet that most conservatives - and a great deal of liberals as well - would be happy to give up their social security "benefits" because most of us know that our "compulsory retirement account" won't be there by the time we want to use it. Right now, we ALL are just throwing our money into a dark hole.

But let me ask you this. Do you not have older relatives or friends that you know that are dependent now on their social security benefit?

Believe it or not this great democratic republic in which we live has been supportive of some social programs for a hundred years.

The point I was trying to make is that many conservatives like to crow about dems being "socialists" because dems are more supportive, generally speaking, of social programs. That does not make them socialists.

But, as it is not legal to "quit" social security, neither are there any liberals in that same imaginary line.

True. But nothing stops a pious conservative or liberal from donating their benefit back to the US government. ( I know that is sort of silly but consider it hyperbole).

BTW President Bush's recent medicare drug benefit package recently passed is the largest, most expensive, SOCIAL program in decades.

So is he a socialist now?

It's fascinating to me that so many xJW's swap religious socialism for political socialism.

I understand all of the right wing conservatives in the USA are lining up at the Social Security office to relinquish their Social Security benefits. They claim that their conscience just wont allow for it.

They are asking that the government keep their check and use it to pay for the war in Iraq.
