I quite agree!
It seems the WTS has some sort of personal problem with birthdays. Maybe the Judge or some other cranky old fart was self-conscious about their age or something. Dig deeply enough, and you could find any number of reasons for or against any special day. Somebody had some hang-up on birthdays, IMO.

Now if you go back and read the crazy 50?s stuff, you could easily pick up on this fact - about a lot of subjects, (i.e. tipping hats, doing bible quizzes rather than party stuff.) Someone really didn?t like anyone enjoying themselves. Unfortunately, this stupid birthday ban has stayed with us. I do believe that the amount of meetings is a throwback to the early days when maybe people had more time - yet again they won?t reduce the meeting?s. The kids take the brunt on that one too.
This organization is stagnant, will never change.......

My impression of the statement is that BDays are still NOT to be observed

Just read it again...then again....and each time you will get something different from it. It will not be having the correct effect on you if you don't feel confused after meditating on it....

I really need to check as whether or not it was the Watchtower?or the Awake. On my other post I seem to of put the Watchtower, I will have to check it out.
Does anyone see any significance to the fact that the item appears in Awake! rather than in the Watchtower?

This is a significant change, even if it is couched in confusing double-speak

That's exactly how I would view it! Shame that it will likely go right over the heads of the majority of JW's
My JW brother gave me the 'talk to the hand sign' when I tried to read the article to him (big sigh)

A main concern is, not what it meant hundreds of years ago, but how it is viewed today in your area . Understandably, opinions may vary from one place to another. Hence, it is wise to avoid turning such matters into big issues.

Why couldn?t I of said it like that... very well put!
When non-JWs try to paint the WTS as dictorial when it comes to practices or beliefs without firm Biblical backing, the WTS can point to this and say, "We don't enforce people to not celebrate. We maintain that it is up to each person's conscience" and they will point to articles like this one.

This article will give the free-thinking, on-the-fringe JWs some wiggle room, but to the die-hards, they'll keep right on believing that Birthdays are banned by the WTS.

LOL For the average JW this 'clarification' will surfice nicely. They will fully understand that maybe they can, maybe they can't, and they won't! It's kinda funny yet so sad...for the kids... who do they suffering.

thanks to all who i have spoken to, who have really helped me.

i was been bought up a jw.when i was 23 i left home and started 'living', got involved with a worldling, who i tried to convert so that we could be accepted.

Yes, but surely it wasn?t ALL birthdays which were ?put in a bad light? just the ones mentioned. Where is it in the bible where it mentions ALL birthdays????
However, if it is very obvious that a custom has no current false religious significance
It?s very obvious to me that birthdays here have no religious significance?..just an acknowledgement of the day your wonderful child entered the world! (no heads have been lost recently anyhow )
I really think it?s time that the borg. Made this crystal clear?..YES OR NO??????
I have recently found out that there is a child in my son class who is a JW, he is clearly telling the other kids that he can?t attend their birthdays as he is a dub?my heart goes out to him. I remember being that child telling other kids the very same, not knowing fully why, wanting very much to share in the fun.
So if you bethelites are reading,please give it up! and let the kids feel a bit ?.human.

how sorry i was to hear from dansk-he is going through a very difficult time.. i would like all prayers, thoughts, please keep this in mind ____ for me!!!!.

the sad news he has cancer.it is lymphoma!!!

they are waiting on the results of the biopsy before determining treatment..... he didnt want me to say anything at first- as he feels you all have your own problems & he didnt want to upset anyone-because he says "they are dear friends".
