  Not really going to set out to prove things one way or the other.

  I would say if you don't wish to prove things one way or another, then claiming she was bascially good or helpful is unproven. Claiming that some may simply be motivated to attack good deeds, is unfounded. Do you want to know what MT meant when she said what she said. Look into it. What does her life's decisions show you. What does allowing a teenager die of treatable kidney disease show you? How about those that knew her. What do they have to say?

  But you aren't out to prove things one way or another, but still seem to have an opinion, even if it is somewhat weak. (by your admission---it is not a strong one)

  It hasn't ended with her death. She has trained others to continue her cult of suffering. She did NOT do her best by them, because she believed that other people's suffering was good for her. And now she has trained up a gaggle of nuns who see it the same way.

  Yes, but if you were homeless and you showed up at the Salvation Army in need of medical care, I think they would direct you to get the medical care instead of offering a panacea. Did these people believe she had their best interests at heart? Did they believe that she would allow them to die a preventable death? Did she give them options? Did she say she could provide them a place to die, but let's make sure you are dying? They had some meds. The nurses gave injections. Perhaps they thought they would receive what they were never going to receive.

  Look, I will help anybody in the ways that I can, but if they need something I am unable or unwilling to provide, then I have to make sure they understand that. If a child is dying of a treatable kidney infection, I'm not going to just give him a cot. I'm am going to warn him that accepting that cot is accepting his death, and that is not necessary. If he refuses, or there truly are no other options, of course he gets the cot. But she actually discouraged more appropriate care---and the people trusted her judgement. She stood in the way. She valued suffering (of others) and she misrepresented what she was really doing and the world, and the Catholic Church allowed her to do so.

  For the first time in what feels like a long time, I am seeing intelligent, respectful discussion between atheists and Christians.

  Interesting, BTS. What parts strike you this way, because it struck me the same.

  When I read BOTR's post, it occurred to me that she looks to faith as a way to organize her world (and definitely correct me if I'm wrong). She doesn't try to fit the world into a theology or belief, but instead uses her faith as a tool to put it all in order. She clearly sees the line between science and faith, and does not feel the need to twist one to fit the other. And some questions aren't answered. There is no certainty that she understands the spiritual almost completely.

  The Universal approach would sort of look at the many different viewpoints as ingredients to the whole. The disagreements and debates would be adding to that. An atheist speaking up may not convince others of atheism, but may help a non-atheist not become extreme in views. The push-pull is where the benefit is.

  Or maybe you don't notice their contributions as much, because you are mostly arguing against people like me, and those are the threads (regarding faith) that take up your time?

  No. They don't contribute as much on the subject. I started a thread asking about those that don't believe in your particular voices/visions interpretation. We had a nice discussion, but it was from a lot of people that rarely show up for those discussions.

  With antibiotics. But that wouldn't have fit in with the glorified suffering she pushed. Tragic.

  Band, I do not know anyone who has stated that you cannot believe as you choose to believe

  Tec, you say that if some understanding is in clear contradiction with your understanding of Christ, only one is true. You call it a clear conflict with Christ's teachings, but that really boils down to your interpretation of Christ's teachings. Other have a very different, and well supported, interpretation of those teachings, and their interpretation strongly disagrees with yours. You have also said that some claim to be Christians, but you question their Chrisitanity. You questioned my past Christianity by bringing up the wine/bread ritual. Of course people can believe as they wish, but when they self-identify as Christian, you have pretty much indicated you don't always accept that.

  These discussion generally end with a debate between a certain kind of believer and atheists. It's lopsided. A minority might believe like you, voices, visions, revelation, subjective understandings, but I don't believe that is the bulk. They don't take part as much in the conversations because they have been your style Christianity vs---everything else.

  Allow me to be the saints advocate, perhaps there was no hospitals in the area, and perhaps the only had aspirins?

  In the case of the boy with the kidney problem, it sounded like a hospital WAS an option. Their reply was not that there was no available help, but if you did it for one you'd have to do it for all. The boy was dying because they refused to distinguish between treatable and untreatable diseases. Perhaps if MT had not got her hands on the boy, he could have been taken somewhere where he would have received the proper care.

  Talked to an elder today

  i guess the stars aligned for this one.

  this morning i dropped my car off to get it fixed and the shop i always go to is a lot closer to my mom's house than mine so i asked her if i could stay at her house while it got fixed.

  she was out in service doing returns at the time and offered to ride me to her house.
