I used to buy the most beautiful notebooks and journals and pens. I'd be determined to take meaningful notes. Fresh start etc. Nothing new under the sun though. Occasionally something that I thought of as a gem would float out---but then back to usual. Instead I'd daydream about a project I was working on, or work out a mental problem for work, or think up lists, etc. But having the book and pen looked good - - - -

I was looking through some old notes and I remembered how dull the meetings were
by gubberningbody ini was the school overseer, and the only way i could pay attention was by ripping every part to shreds.
everything was so elementary and boring.
why anyone would have needed to take notes was beyond me.

Welcome Angel. I just got Steve Hassan's Combatting Cult Mind Control today. I probably have nothing constructive to add at the moment---I haven't read it yet.
However I did find something very interesting. I ordered the book from my college library--and it is a mess! It is worn and dogeared--the cover is torn half off. The inside is underlined and highlighted. I've never ordered a book from them in such a state. You can tell it's been read over and over. I know that not everyone reading the book was a JW---and i don't know if ANY were. But its condition has led me to believe that education (since this was a college library) is a very powerful tool against cults.
Slightly OT---but I thought interesting.

Evolution 2.0
by botchtowersociety inwill we all be tweaking our own genetic code?you have to wonder what's going on in the dna of harvard genetics professor george church.. what extra bit of code does he have that the rest of us don't?
if genes tell the story of a person's life, then some altered sequence of 'a's, 'c's, 'g's and 't's must be at play, because his brain works like almost no one else's.. about 30 years ago, prof church was one of a handful of people who dreamed up the idea of sequencing the entire human genome - every letter in the code that separates us from fruit flies as well as our parents.
his lab was the first to come up with a machine to break that code, and he's been working to improve it ever since.. once the first genome was sequenced, he pushed the idea that it wasn't enough to have one sequence, we needed everyone's.

This has been some of the most exciting research ever. We cannot hide behind a screen of uncertainty and fear---but we must press forward. We must make ourselves ready---and answer questions as we go.

As a JW - Did you See Meetings Continue in Spite of Medical Emergencies?
by flipper ini was talking the other day with a fellow board member about medical emergencies occuring at meetings and how we both agreed that we ( while jw's ) had never seen a meeting stop or be cancelled due to medical emergencies experienced by a fellow jw.
the wt society trains jw' s to lose their authentic human feelings or any empathy towards others physical or emotional sufferings many times.
so many times at meetings , in spite of someone suffering a serious medical emergency it was " the show must go on " type of attitude displayed by congregation elders.. my first experience at seeing a medical emergency at the kingdom hall was an older sister who had an epileptic attack.

I've seen meetings carry on in spite of medical emergencies---speakers getting sick and passing out---just to have another take his place, etc.
The thing I don't know is how these things are handled in other groups or churches. I mean---I just don't know the answer to that.
Any experiences out there with other groups too?

You can be fined for holding Bible studies in your home in California
by Terry infaith california city fines couple for holding bible study in their homeposted on september 19, 2011 at 1:36am by madeleine morgensternphoto via flickr user erwin vogelaar.
a southern california couple has been fined $300 dollars for holding christian bible study sessions in their home, and could face another $500 for each additional gathering.. city officials in san juan capistrano, calif. say chuck and stephanie fromm are in violation of municipal code 9-3.301, which prohibits religious, fraternal or non-profit organizations in residential neighborhoods without a permit.
stephanie hosts a wednesday bible study that draws about 20 attendees, and chuck holds a sunday service that gets about 50.. the fromms appealed their citations but were denied and warned future sessions would carry heftier penalties.

I'm thinking zoning issues. When does the activity elevate from simple bible study in the home to actually operating a church in the home. Should be interesting to watch this play out in the courts. Considering that many churches don't have a permanent home---and often rent or share space---perhaps this is the issue at hand. I'm not taking sides, just trying to see the bigger issue. Lot's of cars parked regularly in a residential zone could aggravate neighbors and change the nature of the neighborhood---residents purchased homes expecting residential activity---which is what zoning is all about. Are they abusing some aspect of this? Again, I don't know, and have no opinion. It would be intersting to see exactly what complaint the city has.
