by dontplaceliterature ini watched a cult documentary called "join us" on sundance today.. it is showing a few more times, if you have that channel.
it was very interesting.
the cult that it follows uses a lot of the same lingo and focuses on a lot of the same scriptures as jehovah's witnesses.

Does anyone know why she was disfellowshipped? Since it's 3 weeks after waking from a coma, I wonder if it was the blood issue. That would be wonderful if that were the issue. I know the focus is on shunning, but to be shunned for saving your life adds a twist that many people have lived.
Edit to say: wonderful in the sense that it will get peripheal attention---not that she found herself needing blood.

Isn't it terrible how blacks and women have rights now, or how it's frowned upon to tar and feather homosexuals, that racism is taboo rather than racial tolerance, so on and so forth. The world was only a better place for straight white men. Everyone else I'm pretty sure would rather live today than a hundred years ago
hear hear I get so irritated when I hear this crap about the good old daze. I recently pointed out to someone that the days may have been good for HIM, but let me tell him how the days were for ME. I was a girl in the 70's and a teen in the 80's. That's not that long ago, but girls were subjected to such repression by all these moral people that stories are simply mundane. It was just a given---the way things were. We accepted treatment that we would not tolerate for our daughters---yet they want us to go BACK. Ugh. Don't get me started. LOL

That's interesting Jonathan. It makes me think of the Hebrew mandate that men wear a border of blue thread around their hems. That makes no sense if well-being were the only motivator. But it makes a lot of sense if it is an outward sign to identify oneself and to separate from other groups. I mean think of the shocking immoratly of wearing cotton blends! It makes no sense. They were trying to come into their own and set themselves apart from all the people that basically had previously subjugated their insignificant little numbers.

I recently read about a tribe in my Antropology class (can't remember the name, but I better find it soon for the exam), anyway, they have a very strict taboo against sex the first year after having a baby. They would consider sex before that year was up as shocking and immoral. Why?
Well they eat an very low protein diet. Infants really need protien their first 2 years to help their survival. So in this groups history they found that when babies were born too close and weaned too early, they often died. They didn't understand about protein. They didn't have birth control. So the natural option became to simply not have sex for one year after giving birth. This spaced the children and gave them a much better chance at survival.
Their morals are based on their diet! With globalization, they may come to learn about protein and supplement their diets. They may start using modern birth control methods and space their children that way. Will the taboo disappear? Probably not right away. So these people may for years to come consider sex within a year of birth to be immoral, even though the original reason for practicing abstinence is long gone. That will be their moral code. Maybe they would think the punishment for breaking the taboo was dead children.

But the basics are there. Murder, theft, adultery, fornication etc. And such beliefs led both sets of believers to bloody acts and suppression. Women are crap. But if we look at some pagan groups, we find women have an elevated standing, and sometimes THEY are the intermediaries. In those cultures, there is no stigman to unwed pregnancy, sex etc. Of course, some go another way and women are highly suppressed. So that smells of might makes right, and the fact that humans keep reverting to such makes me believe that morals dont come from some external source, but are often an expression of our own selfish desires.

I think the Quran and the Bible are too similiar for a good comparison in this area.
Maybe comparing the Bible with certain Pagan beliefs. Both spawned warlike believers who also had mandates against murder--which seems contradictory. However if we look at the moral codes for sexuality, we can find a lot of interesting differences.

Bioflex, your posts came off incredibly preachy with no room for discussion. You stated absolutes---God kicked adam and eve out of the garden for immorality. Period. It is our experience that when someone opens like that (we don't even know you) that you have come here to preach. And if you came with the purpose of spreading a message, we have learned that arguing is fruitless. You had negative things to say immediately about how some of us look at the world, with science, and your statements betrayed a certain ignorance of the process. Again we have learned that those that come out criticizing without really having a grasp on what they are criticizing generally are here to save souls, and we get very tired of that. If we have read you wrong, just prove it to us, and we will converse.
Yes, the current understanding is that chimps and humans share a common ancestor. We branched off so to speak. But comparing chimps to humans can be problematic if done simply because it ignores millions more years of evolution. The branch that became US followed an exciting and complex journey.

I wish I could give more details on this PS---but they had laws. It's just been a long time since I looked into this. They had laws and methods. And while they would be incredibly brutal with others---they also would not complain when that brutality was used on them. It didn't mean they didn't hurt or weren't negative, but they would take it as it was the right thing. Complaining was not an option.
Think of the dub that get's disfellowshipped but still believes. Shunning is not pleasant for them, but they buy into that code. Even THEY think it is best. They have done it themselves, and now they understand that it also applies to them. I have known SO MANY that claimed DF'ing and shunning were the best things that happened to them.
Sort of like that.
