I remember the stuff about the birds eating the dead bodies! I also thought that the end was near because the bird population was increasing greatly and it was even on the news how the birds were multiplying. It scared the bejebbers out of me at the time. How nice it is to not fear every day of my life now. News is news, and I don't tie everything in with the "time of the end," which I am sure all JWs still do. You are even taught that the daily news and the local news are things you should tie in with the sermon to the houselholder. I never thought about tying it in with the preaching work before, but if you say something with an ounce of truth and a fact in it, then that makes the other stuff you say more believable. Hmmm. Start to brainwash on the first visit at the door!

Adventure-Finding old family graveyard

hi folks,.

my brother and i decided we were going to find the old family graveyard.

the problem was that the last time we were there was 40+ years ago and it was hard to find then with someone directing us there.

Hi Ken,
I have all the family cemetaries marked off where our relatives are on my Mom and Dad's side as much as I know. I still need to find where my Mom's mother is buried. We always went to her Dad's grave was and I thought that her mom was there too. But nope! She and he were divorced and I found out that she was married again and now I have to find where she was laid to rest at. I have taken my girls to these places. Most are old cemetaries are something to see with the old tombstones and the old brick and stone buildings. Cleveland has a treasure trove in old cemetaries. The one my grandfather is in has an old to new children's section. So sad to see all the graves covered in toys and flowers. But fasinating at the same time the way it is laid out.
We need to know these things so that our kids can trace their families and have some roots. So much was lost to the JWs in waiting for the end to come soon.
My children and I stop all the time when we see an old cemetary that we have never explored. Such history there. And we wonder what the people were like. The names are unique to the era at times too.
We have an older cemetary within walking distance from our home and my daughters go there all the time and sit under the old big trees an enjoy the peace and quiet.

Widows, Orphans and Homeless People???

why dosen't the wbts do anything as far as helping the widows,orphans and homeless people?.

and what about battered women?.

i think they dont because they do not have a clue about unconditional love.

The only help you will see for these ones, if any, is going to be on the local level and the conditions will be that they keep going to meetings on a regular basis and turn in time regular. They will also be encouraged to take advantage of any governmental help available. Nothing more than that. And the local level of generousity will be only to the level that the local elders and individuals feel charitable. Sad, but over the past 45+ years, that is how I have seen it.

Hey! You go out in field service and cheat on your time, you may as well do it at work too! I know many JWs who cheat on their time to "God" so what difference does it make if you apply the same "principles" to your time to a "worldly" group, your job? He is at least practicing what he "preaches"!

other than 'partaking', what exactly is it that 8,000 old boogers do the rest of the year?.

doesn't anyone else find it odd that out of these 8,000+ old boogers, only like 9 of them are on the gb?

I have known several over the years and I asked a couple of them at different times if they were involved in anything much. The answer was always no. One woman told me that the only time she has been in contact with headquarters is when they have a question that they put to the lot of them to see if they might all "be in agreement" on some topic. Even that had at that time, only happened once. So in general, as much as I have ever been told is that they are pretty much like the rest of us, on the outside looking in. Most that I have known have also been very nice and unpretentious, working for a living and having the same problems the rest were.

Do You Fear Death?

i am very interested to know how all of you feel about the subject of death and the future.

do you fear death?

what do you think are the possibilities for the future?.

I feel more free from the fear of death now than ever before. I feel cheated on life mostly, since I spent most of my life as a raised in the faith JW and now there is so little left in comparison. I know that at first when I "drifted away," I was much more afraid than now. Bad thunderstorms and tornado warnings would make me think of Armeggedon and I would fear being destoyed, because like you, and most every JW out there, you are taught to believe you will never be good enough to survive the Big A. So therefore, you feared death. As time goes on I very rarely even think those thoughts of before when a bad storm approaches. We had some wicked lightening last night and the only thought I had was to turn off the computers!
It is nice to have that freedom back, freedom from fear. I still puzzle over death and why we need to die, or do we really die? There are so many thoughts out there that it would be difficult to ever find the facts if there really are any. So after being burnt by the JWs all my life and after investigating religion as a whole and finding everything lacking up to now, I figure if God wants to destroy me over that, so be it. But if he is the God of righteousness and love, he can read my heart and know exactly where I am at, and take care of the mess.

I just read their comments and I can't believe anyone in any religion would write this crap. When I was an active and believing JW I would never think this garbage. I tried NOT to think of all the "worldly" people being destroyed. These idiots are relishing the thought of their neighbors dying in the worst ways! Sick! They are definitly not apply Biblical examples such as "Love your neighbor as your self." and the one about Jehovah not wanting even one person to be destroyed. This religion is one I am glad to be rid of!

yes, another dumb, deceptive, biased "awake" magazine.. on the subjects of health and aging, the awake is becoming.

Yet, is this not what the WTBTS has been preaching for over a hundred years? "Cures for mankind"? And has not each "cycle of enthusiasm" been followed by great disappointments over "promised cures" that this system will "soon end" and our "woes" will be over. What a joke that they condemn others for what they themselves practice daily!

Have you ever seen the old movie about a couple who met, fell in love, and promised to meet back at a cottage on the beach every year no matter what there circustances were? I can't recall the name of it, but they did met back every year dispite the fact of marriage, children and the life "stuff". They went on for years until, I think, one of them died. But the rest of the year they went on with their lives elsewhere.
What you said reminded me of that movie, which I thought was a bit progressive for it's day. I understand just where you are coming from. I have wondered along those same lines as I have gotten older and of course, away from JWdom. I can't help but wonder how much religion (all of them) restricts those areas of life.
I think too, that women wouldn't feel so dependent and possesive if they were secure financially for the most part. Men can take off easier it seems, part after the kids are raised. But women, except for some of the up and coming younger generation, seem to be more tied to the "old men" in their live due to finances. I think many would make a run for the hills if they could live alone financially.
