The Curries have never been Hasidic Jews
I wasn't trying to say they were. The topic just made me think of the book I read. sorry for the miscommunication!
i was reading in the guardian yesterday about edwina currie, former british mp and junior health minister in the eighties.. when she married out of the orthodox jewish faith her father refused to speak to her again (even though he was an atheist and used to go round to a friend's house for bacon butties).. her mother kept in touch and loved her grandchildren but her father would drive her mum to visit but stay in the car.
.
just reminded me that i am not the only one to suffer from shunning due to relisgious differences.

Yes, hasidic jews also shun the way JWs do.
I remember reading the book "The Chosen" as a teen...It was about a friendship between a hasidic jewish kid and a more mainstream jewish kid. THat's when I realized JWs are not alone...that there are others in wierd controlling groups that are stuck in or face shunning...
Super strict fundamentalist groups are the shunners, and many faiths have these little super strict fundamentalist groups... little 'cults' within the larger faith.
autopsy - whitney killed by multiple gunshots.. http://www.koinlocal6.com/mostpopular/story/autopsy-whitney-killed-by-multiple-gunshots/pfbmma18luksrgnszxpxfq.cspx.
salem, ore. -- the oregon state medical examiner's office announced monday the death of 21-year-old whitney heichel was caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
heichel's body was found friday afternoon on larch mountain in east multnomah county.. .
This article says she was raped:
The young Oregon barista Whitney Heichel who vanished on her way to her job at a Starbucks was sexually assaulted before she was shot "multiple"
times, according to charges filed today against the man arrested in her death.
Jonathan Holt, 24, a neighbor of Heichel and a member of the same Jehovah's Witness church, appeared via closed-circuit television in Clackamas County court wearing a suicide smock.
He reportedly cried throughout the arraignment, simply answering "yes," to the judge's questions.
Holt was charged with seven counts of kidnap, robbery, sodomy and murder. His case will soon be presented in a grand jury, and additional charges may be filed. If convicted of the most serious counts he could face the death penalty

how sad......
The gathering included references to scriptures that might lend comfort in a time of crisis, said a congregational elder, but wasn't materially different from a regular service.
Figures.

Madekeine Peyroux - Don't Wait Too Long
last night, i listened to words that were really hard to hear.
i'm not sure how much of the conversation i blocked out.. i intentionally initiated a conversation with a jw man that i've grown very fond of who has been talking about marriage next year as recently as last weekend (our anniversary weekend).
we have had the conversation before, but i have to admit, i have a tough time listening and i find that i leave the conversations not believing what i'm hearing so therefore i can't seem to retain the details.
he was having a the worst time with the fact that marrying me would "disappoint" Jehovah.
I call B.S.
If this guy was worried about 'disappointing Jehovah' he wouldn't be dating you.
He is worried about what his dubbie friends, family, and elders will say. He is worried about his position in the cong.
Fact is, he is in a relationship with you. This means that either he doesn't really think Jehovah is disappointed in his relationship with you, or he does think Jehovah is disappointed in the relationwhip but he could care less about disappointing Jehovah.
Either way, his story about not wanting to disappoint Jehovah by marrying you does not fly.
Tell him nice try, but you don't buy it.
jehovah's witnesses are what???
this should be fun!.
liars.
my father passed around 9 this morning.
he'd been in poor health for some time, but it still comes as a shock to have him gone.
we are going to miss him terribly.
I'm so sorry for your loss. So sorry.
You must be very proud of the all the amazing things he did.
often the topic of shunning comes up on this forum, how bad it is, unloving, etc.. my question is this.
even if you think disfellowshipping is bad, have you ever cut off ties and/or avoided anyone?
maybe not to the level of jws, but do you just try to avoid talking to some people or try to be in another part of the room at social events?
Look KS, the OP wanted to know what the difference is between him avoiding people out in the world (shunning in general) and disfellowshipping.
My answer showed that there are many, many BIG DIFFERENCES.
Restraining orders, jail, other abusive groups shunning (extremely or otherwise), super bad bad people being shunned, the history of ostracisim, and exceptions to rules don't change the fact that there are many BIG DIFFERENCES between avoiding people because you don't agree with their actions and the way JWs treat people who are disfellowshipped.
