  i was angry with my kid for questioning me.

  i work, i pay the bills, i provide food, clothing and shelter for them.

  Oh, and you don't want your kids to think they are a 'speck of dirt'! Do you really want to send a person who thinks they are a 'speck of dirt' out into the world to get a job, find relationships and be all they they can be? What kind of jobs and relationships do 'specks of dirt' get?? You're supposed to tell them they are strong and smart and to teach them how to navigate the world in respectful ways and how to respect themselves. How does calling them a 'speck of dirt' leave them with any self-respect?

  And be really, really GLAD that your kids question you and are not robots. you want them to question authority and to use critical thinking. You don't have to give them their way, but don't squash questioning and critical thinking.

  This is a good teachable moment for you and your child. Scully is right. Model appropriate behavior.

  (my dad did this number on me and let me tell you that at 43 years old I still have his stupid words running in my head, telling me I'm nothing. Even though I know its not true...)

  No, I am not confused. The charges against "Stop and Frisk" are that, as practiced by the NYPD, it violates people's civil rights.

  The NYPD’s stop-and-frisk practices are illegal. Racial profiling and searches based on illegal profiling violate the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition against unreasonable searches.

  As I said, this is just one easy to think of example of the actual fight for civil rights going on in this country today. There is still much work to do in this country. Pretending there is not a problem is part of the problem. So, please stop it.

  Civil rights = the same rights for all in society with everyone equal in the eyes of the law.

  Can you please name me any law that says black people do not have a right that white or hispanic people do?

  As you know, those laws have been outlawed in this country fairly recently, within the lifetime of many here on this board. We have at least come that far.

  The fact that no laws come out an say people of color's civil rights can be violated does not mean people of color's civil rights are no longer violated.

  Take for example New York's 'Stop and Frisk'.

  Almost 90% of people 'stopped and frisked' are completely innocent. The police must be really, really bad at knowing what 'suspicious' behavior is, or they are stopping people for something other than suspicious behavior.

  the people of color in Park Slope are not being treated equally by law enforcement, and thus, their civil rights are being violated. Remember, most of the people stopped are completely innocent. And most are people of color.

  because he initiated it.

  I think Zimmerman initiated it. on this we disagree.

  Why would you ask such a thing? Do you think I'm some kind of a racist who just judges everyone guilty or not guilty based on the color of their skin?

  I believe it was a fair trial.

  I accept the verdict is based on the law and the available evidence.

  I ALSO believe that 1) if GZ had not profiled TM as an 'asshole' and a 'punk' and 'up to no good' this never would have happened (not illegal but certainly wrong) 2) if GZ had not followed TM, as the 911 operator told him "ok, we don't need you to do that", this would not have happened (not illegal but certainly wrong) 3) if GZ had followed the rules of Neighborhood Watch (that he had been trained in) this never would have happened (not illegal but certainly wrong)

  I believe George Zimmerman is responsible for the death of TM and that it was not a justified killing. I'm not talking the law here. the law says, based on the evidence that we have, that he is not guilty. I'm talking ultimate responsibility.

  The whole thing is his fault.

  But as I said, I also believe there was a fair trial, and I accept the verdict is based on the evidence and the law. In the eyes of the law, he is "not guilty." But that doesn't mean he is not guilty. He is guilty as hell of killing that kid.

  I wonder what we can do to make sure something like this does not happen again?
