my friends and i started collecting these little figures from the quater machines in the grocery store called homies... just wondering if anyone else has these in their supermarkets/drug stores... they are so funny... little guys drinking 40's, holding skateboards.

they're great.

These little "toys" glamorize the gang lifestyle that is prevelent in Latin-American communities.

I agree. I work with children (high school) in gangs all the time. It is very sad (the lifestyle and what it leads to) and it destroys futures and lives.

My 10 year old son brought a Homie toy home and the first thing I thought was, this is a gang toy for little kids! To me it is like advertising cigarettes to kids! Its like Joe Camel: really cool looking and likeable, but do you want your kid playing with a Joe Camel toy? Wearing a Joe Camel shirt? Thinking Joe Camel is cool?

I went to the Homie web site and read on there about how the Homies have nothing to do with gangs and people shouldnt judge others based on the clothes they wear and the cars they drive, etc.

After reading that part of the web site, I started to feel badlike maybe I jumped to conclusions.

But then I kept reading the web siteand looking at the art section (some great stuff there, btw) .but I found gang signs and symbols. Then I realized I had been fooled again. I knew when I first saw them these toys were about gangsI should have trusted my instincts.

Street gangs, like all ~~cults~~ dangerous high control groups, are often dishonest with the outside world.

I showed my son some web sites for former gang members. I read him some of their stories, pointed out how they are called homies. I pointed out how the real life former gang members have cute nic names, just like the toys and some were in wheel chairs... from being shot. I told him many of the kids he goes to school with have older brothers and sisters in gangs. And that one day, he may be asked to join a gang. Or one of his friends may join a gang. suddenly he doesnt think the Homie toys are so cool any more.

If you knew the kids I work with, you wouldn't think these toys were cool, either.

I wish they were not gang related, but they are. They could have been a repesentation of Hispanic culture without the gang references. That would be really cool.

here are some questions for the honest and good elders in the congregation of jehovahs witnesses:

#1. when a member of your congregation asks you if it is true that victims of pedophiles where/are often not encouraged by elders to go to the police, or where told to stay quiet because they have/had no second witness, will you tell the truth?

#2 when you hear members of the congregation attack the victims who spoke out on dateline and panoramavictims who did nothing wrong and whose lives where destroyed by evil menwhen you hear members of the congregation attack those victims, what will you do?

how would you go about offering help to ones seeking information on cults ?.

it seems that we here are in a good position to help families get thier loved ones out of varoius cults.. i worry about how much knowledge youd need before you tried.. any thoughts or advice.. regards.

Because you love the TRUTH, WILL YOU CORRECT THE MEMBERS OF THE CONGREGATION WHO ARE SPREADING MISINFORMATION, or will you allow the lies to spread and so allow the victimization of these brave young ones yet again? What would be the right thing to do? What would Jesus do?

#3 If you believe that the victims on these shows are telling the truth about what happened to them, AND if you believe Brother Bill Bowen is correct that WT policy must change to protect the children, will you TAKE A STAND FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE? Or will you allow Bill Bowen to stand alone?

#4 Would you give up your position as elder for what is right? Would you give up your friends for what is right? Would you give up EVERYTHING for what is right? Isnt that what you as a JW have always believed? That you ought to actually LIVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE?

#5 Why are you just sitting there??

select the bbc programme from the drop-down list (it's in two parts).. the first programme starts at about 2 minutes (you get to see our weather report first) and has a good intro by the newsreader.. let me know if you have any problems ... i'll probably put a better quality version up when i have more time.

The typical JW response to these reports is that the TV report is full of 'apostates'. Well then, how are they gonna explain that GB member who was a total heartless b*stard? And the elders who run away from the cameras?
