So, for all you fans of big fat books (like, say, Harry Potter) ...
by dedalus inwho among you is reading east of eden, oprah's book club selection?
(because, of course, reading is no fun unless there's a huge corporate media conglomerate backing you up ...).
is it just me, or do any of you think it's strange, almost disturbing, to see a bunch of people, almost entirely pre-or-post menopausal women, waving this book over their heads, screaming with the same sort of unbridled glee exhibited on, say, a drabby-housewife-makeover episode?.

I noticed the bit about it being about tote bags. Just so you know, all the money raised on the book club items she sells goes to charity.
I think it is great she is 'using her power for good.' Encouraging people to read great literature (eduacating, really) and raising money for charity: whats wrong with that?
My 2 cents!

WTS Addresses Child Abuse - er, kind of...
by iiz2cool inmy wife, who is intent on re-activating herself as a dub since i da'd myself, went to the convention this past weekend.
she showed me this new publication entitled "learn from the great teacher", and placed great emphasis on these two pages i scanned and am posting.
it makes a poor show of telling children what to do when confronted by a child abuser.

Blondie: I think that is an excellent idea. I am going to do this this week.
Sword: Nothing you said in your post addressed any of the concerns raised on this thread.

Movie Titles for JW Talks
by Stephanus inperhaps the borg should consider trying to enliven the boring old meetings by giving talks, both special needs and others, spiffy movie style titles.
for a talk on volunteering to help out in for field service: "dude, where's your car?".
for a chat on the latest us stats and figures: "american pie chart".

The first thing that comes to mind after reading this (after the need to throw up) is the idea that this now the official load of crap that must be fed over and over to all JW children. I imagine that this is what elders will be required to go over with any child who says they were abused. Can you imagine?? How awful!
The book instructs children what to do..to say “Stop that! I am going to tell on you!” But the book does not say that sometimes the child will not be able to do this, either because of being physically controlled or emotionally terrorized. What then? How will the child who did not, could not, yell, “Stop!” feel when the elders go over these pages with them? I’ll tell you how they will feel: GUILTY!!!! And very BAD!
Not to mention the fact that an abused child who reads this has to conclude that what was done to them was done by Satan!
And like others have pointed out, the book says Jehovah can and will protect his children, so what is the child to think when Jehovah does not stop the abuse? That Jehovah doesn’t love them for some reason. (probably because they are BAD.)
It is sick! Sick sick sick. If you think the other Great Teacher book gave nightmares, you aint seen nothing.
I really think this is just a bunch of crap written to show judges and media.
Sick.

Take good care of her and you!!

Adventures at the District Convention
by RunningMan inwell, after a 15 month absence from the kingdom hall, i once again found myself in the biggest kingdom hall of all the district convention.
as in previous years, the material presented was dull and repetitious, so once again, i was forced to provide my own entertainment.
so, like last year, i am pleased to present a further installment to my assembly adventures, called:

My favorite:
On Friday morning, we pulled into the parking lot and were greeted by a magnificent sight. The lot was filled with a great crowd of parking attendants, which no man was able to number. As far as the eye could see, parking attendants were frantically flapping their arms, like a million pairs of long underwear on a clothesline (This is my submission for best apostate simile).
I laughed all the way through this post. Thank you!!!!!!!
All in favor of making this funniest thread of 2003?
