It is very much up to the whims of the three elders you get assigned, and unless something new has been published I am unaware of, there is very little in the Shepherd book on the specifics to guide them. It's up to their gut and how much they like you.

An offer from the Governing Body
by irondork in.
the governing body took us along to an unusually high mountain, and showed us all the friends and family members that had been ripped away and they said to us.... .
all these people we will give back to you if you fall down and do an act of worship to us.

Infographic on the March 2013 Awake
by RayPublisher inthe watchtower has chided its members repeatedly for many years about not reading anything it deems unsuitable, especially when it is composed by former members.. interestingly, the new march 2013 awake magazine pages 10-11 has an article about a woman that studied and then converted from judaism to jehovah's witnesses.
there are three key points in the article that actually encourage those with discernment to go against the watchtower ban on books written by those with dissenting views.

"The Slamming the door" article is quite strong and pretty well done.
It cuts off though near the bottom:
"Another middle-aged woman, from Melbourne, says that among people she grew up with in the church there was a "conscious class" – she knows about 40 – who only attend so they can keep seeing their PAGE 16"
"PAGE 16" is not clickable...

I heard about the skit almost two years ago but couldnt' find it. I googled it several times then forgot about it. Then last night I randomly stumbled upon it.
Coincidence? Or Holy Spirit?? I think we all know the answer to that!

UPDATE and FYI:
I spent a bunch more time on the infographic and I feel it is considerably better now. Also it has been tuned so that the wording is aimed at an awakening JW.
Suitable for framing?? Or printing up on postcards perhaps??

@ Hilary - Yeah that's true. But the main reason I made the graphic was to deconstruct the hypocrisy of the subtext embedded in the article by WT Corp, namely this:
1. It's okay to question your religion and examine it by reading information written by critics and former members.
2. You are ignorant and uninformed if you have not critically questioned what your religious leaders and parents have taught you.
3. To be a true follower of God you must leave your friends and family members behind that don't accept your newfound beliefs.
4. Points #1 through #3 only apply to those that are non-JWs. It does NOT apply to us, only to the unsaved unwashed masses we are trying to convert.

Punishment for not shunning?

Yeah that's right. When I served on an elder body we were instructed to warn a few publishers about repeated association with DFed family members they did not live with. If they make it too blatent they can indeed be DFed themselves.
