As I was walking to the station today I passed three people handing out Watchtower tracts at the precise moment that one of them happened to turn to the other and say, "It's going to rain." I thought it was quite amazing to hear such an accurate prophecy from them after having come across this rather interesting Wikipedia entry and counting how often they have made the same failed prophecy (13, if you include The Bible Student Movement):http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dates_predicted_for_apocalyptic_events
I'm reading a book, called "When Prophecy Fails," quite an interesting book for someone like me, being rather interested in psychology, human behaviour, logic, truth, etc.. The example in the book explains what happens under certain conditions, when people have a very strong commitment to a prophecy which fails. Cognitive dissonance causes them to try and rationalize their belief, and instead of admitting defeat, they cling desperately to any excuse they can find. They then try even harder to get other people to believe in what they do. The rationale being that if they can get others to believe it too, they won't feel so bad. Must be quite difficult to believe after a failed prophecy when you have no-one to encourage you to do so.
The next end of the world will be on the 27th of May. You have eight days, but don't worry... if you miss this one, there will be plenty more, probably predicted by the same people :)

I would like to thank all of you...
by sooner7nc in...for helping me see the light.. in 2008 i voted for the first time ever.
i voted for obama for president because i truly believed he and biden were a better choice to lead america than anybody running with sarah palin.
she scared me and still does even though i respect and admire john mccain.. being in texas and enjoying our relatively strong local economy i voted for rick perry to remain as governor and voted a mix of republican, democrat, and one libertarian for the other state and local positions that were up for election.

I thought it doesn't matter who you vote for, because Goldman Sachs runs the world.

Her alias is "g claires"
I would like as many people as possible, to please reply to her message, and give her some friendly advice. She probably has no idea that I know that she's posted that comment, so I think it's best I keep that secret.
Anyway, this is her background:
She's about thirty, was brought up in a JW family with two older sisters and an older brother. When she was very young her parents died in a car accident. She was raised by her Baptist gran, and left the JW's and started celebrating her birthday. She moved to England and lives with her son. I don't know all the facts, but I imagine that her sisters might be encouraging her to go back to the JW's. I'm not sure if it shows from what I've written, but I can't imagine she's had an easy life.
If you could help, by replying to her message on YouTube and giving her your best advice, that would be great. One can login to YouTube with a gmail / google account.
Thanks!

Talking about "do not disturb signs" in hotels... my wife and I were in a hotel in Paris when the friendly staff knocked on the door to inform us that our "Do not disturb" sign had fallen off the door handle onto the floor.

Wasn't Armageddon Supposed to Happen in the First Century?
by losthobbit into me it's pretty obvious from these verses.... matthew 23:36, matthew 24:34, mark 13:30 and luke 21:32.
...that jesus, talking to his disciples, told them that armageddon would happen in their generation (the first century).
just wondering if everyone else sees it this way, or have i missed something?.

Band on the Run
Thanks for that... so it seems Peter, Paul and John were all wondering why this big event had not yet happened.

LeavingWT...
"Was Jesus a false prophet?"
Seems that way to me.
WT Wizard...
"Those verses refer to the destruction of Jerusalem."
Really? I think it's a lot more than that... this is from Mark (NIV translation -> Sorry if anyone prefers the NWT, but it probably says pretty much the same thing):
Jesus repeatedly says that the Kingdom of God is about to come within the lifetime of those listening.
So the obvious questions here are: "What is the coming of the Kingdom of God?" and "Did it happen at the time Jesus specified?"
Here are some verses that describe the coming of the Kingdom of God
- Mark 9:1 (It would come within the lifetime of those he was talking to, confirmed again in Luke 9:27, and Matthew 24:34)
- Mark 9:47 (The Kingdom is something that you can enter - as apposed to hell)
- Mark 13:2-8 (Gives the impression that it's going to be catastrophic)- Mark 13:17 onwards (Describes a pretty massive event, even referring to heaven and earth passing away)
WTWizard:
"we are going to see a total collapse in the whole money system"
That does seem likely. The money system is sh1t... Wait, I'll stop there... I tend to get into trouble on this forum when I talk about that topic.
Ding, two things:
1. It's very clear that these things were supposed to happen in their generation. Saying a thousand years is like a day does not matter... a generation is a generation. The writer of Peter was probably wondering why it hadn't happened and felt he had to defend his beliefs.
2. If you read 2 Peter 3, it seems like even the writer of Peter expects it to happen to the people he's writing to.

Nice to read such positivity... I look forward to a time of rational thinking if it comes in my generation
