There are too many for me to say, Terry. I like that Nero's name was cleared, this is even promulgated by an early WT (methinks, here we go with those misconceptions again), that he set fire to Rome and blamed it on the Christians.

We all have many, many, many, many MISCONCEPTIONS
by Terry inmost of what we think we know consists of wrong information that we allowed to come in to our head.. we weren't on guard.
we weren't thinking critically.
or, we trusted the source and simply accepted the wrong thing.. a great deal of our misconceptions come from genuine authorities like our parents:) who are crammed full of untrue ideas they learned from equally.

Help with Mathematical Concepts, Not Arithmetic
by Band on the Run inmy math background is embarassing.
my public education was very sad.
although i received good grades in college track math courses, i never understood the underlying ideas or motivations.

I love applied mathematics, such as in physics. It is a language that describes the everyday effects we see.
Accounting math is boring, however. It's about balancing checkbooks and what not, but at least it is practical and useful for everyday life.
Every once in a while, I try to do mental math, but I'm just not that good at it. Give me a pen and paper, and I can figure out most any equation (with logic; that's more my strong suit).

For those in any doubt that the Society is at war with Facebook...
by cedars in...take a look at this from page 29 of the latest october 2012 awake!.
the gloves are now well-and-truly off.
referring to facebook as a "social networking website" clearly isn't working.. the society now feels compelled to start being more specific about which websites it doesn't want you to visit!.

Well cedars, that is a legitimate problem. Can't this info be sold to third-parties? Can't this info be hacked? Just look at Anon...

Theistic Evolution
by cofty inthoughtful christians including scientists like francis collins and kenneth miller accept the evidence for evolution unconditionally.
the only thing that distinguishes their understanding of life from the views of dawkins is that they believe god planned and started the process intentionally.. just a word about the subtle but vital distinction between "theistic evolution" and "intelligent design".... over-simplifications alert - intelligent design is creationism in disguise.
it is a modern twist on the "paley's watch" argument.

I guess my question back is: is it really true that a good creator could only have created life (and the universe, really) without using a process as brutal as evolution? - Sulla
Well, if you are talking about an omnipotent creator as well, then you are limiting his power. Also, how does such brutality fit into the description "good"? Why would you worship or reverence such an entity?
I think this leads to an even worse conclusion than what atheism provides. To say there is someone behind the suffering of creation, and that same entity is god, just gives us a cruel creator. How exactly is that "spiritually satisfying"?
That the whole process of placing life in every possible place on the planet could only be justly implemented by herbivorous creature who gently pass from this life painlessly and in their sleep? - Sulla
Why even have them pass? What exactly forbids their eternity? Also, why not?
Maybe it is better to start at a different point. Seeing all this suffering, couldn't one conclude that God is very much like Ares, who actually likes suffering and pain? It seems to me that the answer is yes. - Sulla
How exactly does that fit the Christian paradigm again? I have heard it argued that god needed to create or allow evil in order to be complete, in order to be able to show justice, mercy, and other such qualities. Even with this argument there are problems, namely, a perfect god cannot be perfect and incomplete at the same time.
BTW cofty, thanks for this thread. Interesting, and good dialogue going on. I was particularly interested in Sulla's and BTS's arguments, and while I still find them lacking and unconvincing, I appreciate them none the less.

Who are the Jehovah Witness online apologist groups?
by Gros Michel no more inthe summer assembly was hot and sticky, it was long on rules and stingy on deep scriptures.
the speaker warned us about the online discussions of greek and hebrew, which are running ahead of the organization.
did you know there are brothers who are trying to check the accuracy of the new world translation?

Crisis of Conscience can be bought as PDF from www.freeminds.org. I'm not sure how much it costs. If you want a paperback, they are a lot rarer. With luck you could find some on Amazon or Ebay.
I recommend reading Ray Franz's Crisis of Conscience. He used to be a member of the Governing Body, so he had inside knowledge no one else had divulged until he wrote his book.

E-watchman - considered apostate. He's a splinter group, headed by himself, and had a decent following. Most now consider him a wack-job.
Ray Franz - dead. The books are Crisis of Conscience and In Search of Christian Freedom. Critical of the Org, but still believed in the Bible and quite a few core doctrines (Jehovah only God, no hellfire)

Being alive
by Nika Bee inhello, i am (almost) new here, and in the beginning i didn't really think that i would ever post something here.
but then.... yesterday i had a little experience, nothing important , people who haven't been in the organisation have probably a hard time to understand why it's even worth talking (writing) about.
but i though if there are people who can relate to it, they are here, and if not this post will just disappear in the internet and no harm was done.. i was walking my friends' dogs in the evening sun, not thinking about anything.

A sense of worthlessness always plagued me in the org. It was never enough. They always want more, they want to suck you dry. You aren't free to be yourself, you must become part of the collective.
