The Grasshopper 'IN' The Shoe Box
by Golf ini came across this story and it had to do with people who yell, scream and bitch about everything in life, and they can't and don't 'do' anything about it.
this fisherman (dave)picked up a newly fisherman (paul)in his community one early morning, and on route to their destination, which was some distance, paul noticed a shoe box on the front seat.
he also heard lots of noises in the shoe box.

As long as you hold to your anger, resentment, etc you cannot heal, you cannot go forward, you stay in the box of your own making
For a long time I lived in a world where I was not allowed my feelings of anger, hurt, and yes, resentment. Even when those feelings were a perfectly normal response to a situation, I was forced to push them way, way down. Now I can experience those emotions and really feel them without having anyone say, "No, you can't".
example: you meet that someone that you harbor bad feelings for, that person has not a clue as to how you feel, he's happy and unconcerned.
Yeah, I know an old man who made his family's life a living hell, but has no guilt -- now in his nineties, he's outlived many of the people he abused. And yes, he's veeery carefree *sad laugh*
Forgive! Not for his sake (because he's totally unawares) but for yours, it is your spirt that needs peace.
What is forgiveness? Sometimes I feel the anger keeps me safe. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, but that is where I am right now.
Thanks for the food for thought.

Nowhere else to go
by joelbear inthere is really nowhere else for me to post about what goes on inside me.
i know that my problems aren't all because i was a witness.
the agony in my mind has led me to a psychiatrist.. he has diagnosed me with cyclothymic mood disorder, a milder form.

How can one jump out of the shoe box?
Maybe by getting a "boost" from the others that are also trying to get out.
If grasshoppers rub together long enough, they will grow wings.

Leoleia had a great post about this a while back:
It's not been said enough that adults when they start to study are expected to ask questions and evaluate what they have learned, to come to a personal decision of whether it is the "truth". Children are not given the same benefit of the doubt. They are told it is the "truth" before they have any ability to fully understand what is taught, and when their critical thinking starts kicking in during their teenage years and they begin to have honest questions about areas of the doctrine that do not make sense or seem to be contradicted by other facts, IT'S TOO LATE! They would now be questioning years (if not a lifetime) of what their parents, elders, etc. have told them what to believe. "How could you doubt what you've believed your whole life? You've given talks in the TMS and gone door-to-door for years! Just don't leave Jehovah, it'll break our heart." An adult who studies has no obligation until they become baptized; a child is completely expected to get baptized and remain a Witness as a matter of course. Rather than giving children/teens the same freedom to evaluate the "truth" and walk away with no harm done if they decide it isn't the truth, JWs tend to view such natural questioning as dangerous and an excuse to get them into the elders' chamber for some straightening out.

Are you handicapped in some way or were you not outright permitted to play?
No, I was healthy and hale. I was just not allowed to play. Period. It was my older sister who was able to play competitively, and it really gave her a great advantage in her adult day-to-day life. She is definitely much better socialized than I -- and I think that her involvement in team sports had a lot to do with that. But it was frustrating for her coaches to see how much crap she had to put up with in order to participate. I mean, she was given the green light to play, but she didn't get all the support at home that she deserved. And I remember her trying her best to teach me some sports principles, like how not to let "the opponent" (whomever that might be) psych me out, stuff like that.
What are some of things you think about that is on the bright side of life?
Well, my boy is part of the gifted program at school, and his team just won the alpha "academic bowl". I'm very happy about that. Even though it is probably too late for me to do some things, I feel good knowing that my children are escaping the way that I was raised in the JWs.

Since R-Rated movies were taboo at the house, Bethel would arrange things where they would get a print-out of the rental list from the video-store and find out who was renting what.
