Veg out on the couch with some beer and watch horror flicks. Hopefully with someone who will want me to hold them during the scary parts.

JW Talk Radio- My First Guest Flaked
by PublishingCult inok, my first guest has flaked on me.
this is a little disappointing because i was looking forward to a discussion about homosexuality and the bible that people could really sink their teeth into.. .

Facebook May Defeat Disfellowshipping
by metatron ini noticed an ex-witness sister on facebook - smiling, looking happy, expressing nice thoughts for any to read -and she is disfellowshipped!.
in her extended family, more and more kids and grandkids are leaving the "truth" - and "friending" her!
it might even be that she now is part of the majority of the extended family.

I deleted all my JW "friends" when I DA'd. Three of them sent me friend requests. I told them I DA'd and they said they don't care. We still talk and hang out. Two of them (married) asked me why I left. I told them and found out that they have many of the same concerns and doubts that I did. They are born-in's and all of their family is in, so they don't want to just fade and then suddenly DA like I did, which I understand. Considering all the counsel I heard against facebook while I was still in, and the number of JWs I knew that just ignored it, I think the org is going to face real problems because of it.

Where to JWs park their cars when going door-to-door?
by bradp ini am a christian and have handed out tracts all over my neighborhood,.
i'm ready to go to a new neighborhood and am trying to determine where to park my car without it getting towed.. is there a jw publication available that covers this kind of info?
.

Depends on where you live. We would just park on the street and make sure we didn't block anyone's driveway, mailbox, or fire hydrant. If there was open space on the end of the street we would park there.

If I owned a store and someone did that I would be furious. I would call up the local congregation and complain. I would also put up a No Soliciting sign that specifically mentioned religious materials.

What's the most dumbest/petty thing you've heard of someone being "stumbled" over?
by Reality79 in- some loser once took offense that i hugged a sister goodbye at a leaving do and ran back to the elders like a little child telling on me.
i was 15, this sister was in her 40s at the time.. - this elder said someone told him they saw me with a copy of the sun newspaper.
yes, this paper is known for its 'page 3' topless girls but far from pornagraphic and i wasn't even thinking along those lines.. - one brother who had a good job was 'counselled' because he was actually able to buy himself nice things including a new car (shock, horror!!

How is it that well educated and financially stable people become Jehovah's Witnesses?
by 21stcenturywoman inwhen i was growing up most of the jws around me were poor and lower middle class.
some were middle class, but very few were upper middle class.
only (maybe) about 1% were college educated.

As others brought up mine was due to emotional reasons. I was at a low point in my life and dealing with what seemed like to much to handle. The JWs seemed nice and caring, the message was good, and I was rushed to baptism before I really investigated the religion. Once things settled down I opened my eyes and really started to research the org. It was at that time I realized I had been misled. I still look back on my time in and wonder how I could have been so dumb and easily misled.

I grow facial hair quickly. I went on a four day camping trip (real camping, no electricty, no RV, no toilets, no showers) and came back pretty scruffy. I was told that I looked wordly and should have brought a razor and shaved everyday. When the big A comes and witnesses are running for the hills to escape the destruction they better bring their razors if they don't want to get struck down by god.

College can be expensive but it's been proven time and again that for most people it is worth it. You have to get a degree you can use and try to limit your costs. Go to community college first and then transfer. Apply for every scholarship and grant you can. Be willing to go to your local state school instead of a private university. Buy your books used or buy less expensive digital editions. My company starts people with an associates at around 45k and people with a bachelors at around 65k. Even factoring in student loan payments you are far better off getting even just an associates than working at some barely above minimum wage job right out of high school.
Real estate is a hard business. Now is a good time to get into it to see if you can actually earn money during bad times. If you can do well now you can do well when times are better. A lot of people got their licenses during the housing boom because it was easy money. Most are out now because they see just how difficult it can be to make even a moderate wage. I'm not a fan of averages as outliers can skew the results. I'd rather see the median real estate agent wage. I'd bet it is quite a bit lower than 75k a year.
The construction industry has been hit hard. I know first hand as my dad owns a cabinet shop. He has always been frugal and hated debt so he has been able to stay afloat using his own personal savings. His crew went from 30 to two in the past five years. Business has started to pick back up and I think he's got six employees now. If he had debt like many business do he wouldn't have made it. My uncle is head of the training department of a plumber's union and my mom's boyfriend owns an A/C shop. He has let almost all of his employees go. There are still a lot of construction workers that are unemployed.
Getting licensed is good if you have the entreprenurial spirit. A lot of people don't have the drive to give up their nights and weekends to really get a business going. He mentions his friend in waste water treatment. The city I'm in has similar positions but they are nearly impossible to get. They are public sector and attrition is low. Taking expensive classes to get a certificate and hoping that you will be the one applicant out of thousands that apply is not the best plan for the future. Having something else you do full time and then if you get the position changing careers is okay.
Most writers don't make squat. Just like most actors and most artists.
Multi-level marketing? Really? For every one person that makes a million dollars from it there are hundreds if not thousands that don't make squat.
Cleaning businesses are great when the economy is booming and people have disposable income. In other times most people will save the money and clean themselves. It's not a bad business to work at to supplement your income.
