Thanks NC. It's my 3rd bout in 2 years. I've got the same lung disease as farkel. It begins with a general viral infection which quickly turns bacterial. It won't kill me though . . . my liver cirrhosis is progressing much faster LOL.

You make a valid point regarding the believer. When I was a JW, anyone telling me that God was a figment of my imagination cut me to the heart. It is insulting to the hearer, no question. It's simply unavoidable. Attempts at soft refute are similarly seen as patronising or condescending. The debate is emotional by default . . . not by anyone's stance or style.

The greatest insult is being intimidated into silence. Both sides must bring the full weight of their argument to the table, while holding emotion in check . . . and be ready to reasonably defend or make sound by evidence and/or logic.

It does matter what people individually and collectively believe . . . it shapes the societal world in which we live.

Since I have suspended belief, beyond that which can reasonably and evidentially be demonstrated as true . . . I have felt the need to have my beliefs challenged . . . the more often and more strongly the better. If there are flaws . . . I want to know what they are. Scrutiny is sought rather than feared. It's simply because I no longer have a significant emotional investment.

Hi NC . . . glad you're still here.

I've been laid up with pneumonia for nearly two weeks so had to read this thread from the start, which took almost an hour. If I wasn't in bed, and bored stiff, I'm not sure I could have managed it. At least Godwins, Cofty's and Woods' laws are all now well established.

I'm not aware of all the history between posters as some appear to be . . . but I've never found your writing style insulting or offensive. Your take on the Atheism debate usually finds agreement with me, and is normally very well presented IMO.

Maybe therein lies the chafing. It is by nature an emotional interchange, for the believer more than the non-believer, as has been pointed out. The reasons are not surprising. Inject an emotionally charged subject with assertiveness and insightful scrutiny and things are bound to heat up. An intelligent, logical and reasonable counter argument poses the greatest of threats to most believers, at a very emotional level.

You can't change that . . . and it's the poorest reason in the world not to challenge belief. Theism is not the benign comforter for the believer alone . . . it's regressive and often dangerous IMO, and should be challenged as strongly as it is disseminated.

Why is what is written in their own literature so often at odds with what they practice in their KH's?

I would also suggest that WT treats the symbol as being of greater value than what it symbolises . . . after all, life is idolatrously sacrificed to the symbol by JW's.

I recall the thread where eggy ran for cover when confronted with the "first principles" on what the bible really says about blood. It's remarkably simple and logical within it's own context IMO, and renders WT doctrine childlike in it's interpretation. Every other line of argument becomes moot. Scriptures like Gen 9;4 lose their mystery, and instead sit comfortably alongside the correct understanding.

Just an update from the Marmite producing capital of the world . . . Sanitarium's factory isn't getting repaired anytime soon. The boys down here are still really into demolishing stuff, not fixing it. Sad news I know.

many say,no other book in all history compares with it.. widely owned book,one least read.people don't understand it.. it's wisdom unmatched,guide for all,brings peace,joy etc and a gift from god.. yet you read kings and chronicles and you see evil rulers like hiltler,stalin.. read ruth..purchase a wife and land on the witnesses of removing a sandal.. where do you get away with, a jew(god's people) marrying a gentile.. try reading your kids a bedtime story from revelation.. the r.c almost had it right when they burnt the bible,they didn't go far enough..
