  I think you can learn much about the principles of logic/rhetoric by examining others in action, if only as an exercise of IDing common fallacious arguments and faulty reasoning. I know JWs who have a hard time IDing fallacious reasoning, but only find it harder to learn the principles when analyzing material they are emotionally-invested in; instead, they'd learn the principles of logic by looking at some topic for which they are detached. . . . KS

  Service meeting topic: Masturbation

  one of my strangest memories of going to the kh was when a young- maybe 18-20, pimply young man got up to talk about jhvhs view of masturbation during a service meeting.. of course, it was impossible to think about him not masturbating.

  i was just hitting puberty and found the whole thing very uncomfortable- i think my dad was even critiquing him (what is that called when elder gives the feedback).

  looking back now i can see that to publicly condemn masturbation, especially when a young man is delivering this admonition, is- well- hilarious.

  why do people send me silly hate mail?

  if you're going to send in hate mail, at least have the decency to use proper grammar and back up any claims with evidence.. goodness me, i thought it was just the jehovah's witnesses that sent nasty emails, now i'm getting it from their spin-off groups!.

  my daughter left her mothers home, so very hard to do and she has been so very brave and strong.

  Glad to hear of your daughters move Oz.

  This sets a good example for your younger ones . . . what the eldest sibling does creates a powerful impression. Like you said . . . they (the dopes) are helping things along nicely. A few dollars now will seem a small price to pay when the others follow the same path out.

  Evolution is all waste and extravagance . . . that's why more than 95% of species are gone-burgers. For every beneficial mutation there are millions of mistakes. Environment changes constantly, as does the inventory of occupants along with it. It's when you try to give it a purpose that it may not actually have, that you run into trouble.
