the current world situation and the wt dealings with the un result in some bigger problems the wt leadership has to solve.. firstly, the war.
an event as big as the attack on the wtc so that people say this has been an historic event comparable to the events of 1914: if this has not been prophecied in the scriptures what should be expected to be?
the wt's only chance is an application of the "pushing" between the king of the south and the king of the north.
Hello German JW,
very good points and well supported.
The point reamin as to the identity of the King of the North.
Lot of debate...the Bible is silent...no more speculations
besides..now with the UN affairs...it is rough time!!
Comment: "I doubt the Society will ever drop its belief that Jehovah's Witnesses are the one true religion. That approach, especially in their minds, would be too fraught with hazards.
A more realistic thing to hope for is that they will continue to proclaim they have the one true religion, but *in practice* will permit members to carry on relatively normal lives."
I'm more inclinde to think in a similar way. I do believe we are
not alone in this.
Eyebrow: "I can hear it now from the JWs who may have been around for a while, "see, we are being persecuted in the press because we are no part of the world...we really are the TRUE religion!"
Possibly ...the only excuse left. It won't explain the many and
many articles written in the last 50/70 years against
the "wild beast ..and its image - scarlet colored beast "
in very defaming, derogatory and abusive words, in public
and also in printed form and in many languages.
To Trilobite: "However, the decision was more likely a panic decision than a conscious choice. It could backfire very badly. If that happens there might be an opportunity for substantial reform."
I do agree with you...very bad indeed - for them -!
As for the reform...I have great doubts.
To Bridgette: "I don't see them surviving as the world's populace gets ever more educated if they do not mainstream HARD and FAST. "
An aventuality...time will tell.

as of 6:02 pm last night i received a facsimile from paul hoeffel at the un on the wts.. he gave me 3 of the 4 things i requested in two paragraphs.. i have sent a scanned version to steve bates and someone else.. i sent it to kent and randy.
and kent and randy have posted the official united nations letter on their web sites.. here is the letter - put your cursor on the image and then right click on your mouse and hit "save image" to your computer.. .
after you look at kent's web site and you people still think this it is a fake letter, phone paul hoeffel yourself at (212) 963-8070.. hawk
Hello to Hawk, Kent, Biblexaminer and all the others,
INCREDIBLE, GREAT, ....EXCELLENT, WHAWWWWWW,
WHAT........ A....... S H O T !!!
YES, After almost 43 (Fortythree) days,
from the beginning of the main thread " United Nations,
NGO's and WTBS " ...the major event arrived!
Who would have thought that " that ...insignificant
date i.e. 27th August 2001 " would have become the
BEGINNING of something...beyond our imagination ..
at least mine !!!
Thanks to ALL , who participated in this ...EVENT, including
those like the Offices of the DPI at the United Nations,
and Steve Bates who published that excellent article on the
"Guardian" .
Everything has been saved for the "ARCHIVES ", a future
reference for those...who will research, including that
piece of art ..." The United Nation's " official letter
on the 11 October 2001, and signed by Paul HOEFFEL, the
Chief NGO Section Department of Public Information.
Some questions - just for those WTBS die hard:
*** Can ANYBODY cast doubts on the AUTHENTICITY
of such a letter??
*** Can ANYBODY claim, with reasonable elements
that the letter is a FORGERY?? A trick from
"..those apostate"??
*** Would it help to add POWER to his authenticity,
if " THE LETTER " is reproduced on a newspaper
article...should we say ... "The Guardian "???
Thanks you all, and let's wait for
comments, reactions and news ...from
U.S.A, Canada, Great Britain, Holland
France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Norway
and Sweden, just to mention a few.
Greetings, J.C.MacHislopp
P.S. I'll come back with more comments.

flash - major breaking!!!!!!!.
i just talked to paul hoeffel 1:35pm - he phoned me.. okay people.
i can now confirm that the watchtower has provided a letter in writing to dpi indicating that the wts has "disassociated" themselves from dpi - ie the wts has made it offical that they have quit.. i can also confirm that the wts has been updating dpi regularily as they are suppose to over the last 10 years.. i can also can say that something is in the works that i can disclose by hopeflly tomorrow.
Hello Hawk and all the others,
thanks for the lates update on the subject.
I’m pleased to notice that you’ve named ... » II PART «
Excellent ! It’s only logical and fair that now this thread
should contain all the informations , quotes, comments about
United Nations, NGO’s and the WTBS.
I wanted to suggest new « ...name « for the topic, but ...
you have been faster.
Btw, I wanted to add that in mho, at the moment we all should wait
for informations from you and /or Bilexaminer. It COULD be
confusing , at this stage, to rush to do things on our own .
Btw, « Without the DPI associate status they have lost a "optics" weapon they use with other governments and courts. « a very good point !!
Hawk, please , keep in mind that I’m prepared to give any help,
for informations, researches, contact and my email is always
at your disposal and , following this kind of comments from you :
« Remember its the official word from the UN that is way more important than the WTS words. »
and,
« Watchtower has provided a letter in writing to DPI indicating that the WTS has "disassociated" themselves from DPI - ie the WTS has made it offical that they have quit. «
I’m eagerly waiting.....like all the others , of course,
for other GREAT and interesting news.
To Abaddon :
« The paperwork of the UN (I am sure) is for the large part in the public domain, probably has to be under, and as such 'we' will have concrete proof available of the JW's association for a decade, and suspeciously timed withdrawl, possibly proof (if this was the case) that they were asked to go).
Keep on rocking in the free world.. »
Excellent comment !.
To Map :
« ... prove that application for DPI associative status was part of an overall global PR scheme to snuggle up to the UN, various Human Rights NGOs, and Governments, and NOT just some isolated "mistake" only trying to gain info from the UN's PR dept. »
A very good observation indeed !
To Mr Bates,
Thank you for taking some of your precious time to post here.
I also would like to thank you , personally, for your interest in this matter. I do feel that your article was written very well and in this particular issue the fact that an – independent –British newspaper has published something...for all to see, it is really, a great thing for all lovers of freedom. Thanks also for informing us of about
another article on nex Saturday. I won’t miss that one either !
from Love Dubs:
« And now their efforts to COVER IT UP only make them appear all the more guilty. If there was NOTHING WRONG with their being a member there...why the hasty removal?? Why no explanation to the press? Why the hush hush?? »
Very logical conclusion.
from Chasson:
« ... which of course was never answered but usually resulted in a visit from elders which wanted to know if we believed that the WTS was "God's" organization. “
“ ... How true is this statement, and it is international. »
I do agree with you 100% !!!
To Somebody and Sean :
I'd like to thank kent, Mac, and zev for bringing to all our attention what the WBTS were doing behind the Jehovah's Witnesses' backs, and the U.N.'s backs. I am now thanking hawkaw and ALL OTHERS who were able to take the time and effort in bringing it more out in the open and (in my opinion) forcing the WBTS to stop the hypocrisy and decietfullness it has shown to it's members and the United Nations. «
« ... I add my thanks to Hawk, MA, Mac, and all the others who worked on this UN/NGO angle. Great job! «
Thanks, Somebody and Sean !
As I have already commented, this has been and continues
to be ...a UNITED EFFORT to uncover LIES and DECEIT !
from SUNSPOT :
« Don't you find their "TIMING" a bit peculiar?? If they felt there was nothing wrong with their membership---WHY resign at all? No, I don't think (as you put it) it's wrong for them to be a member and then NOT be a member.......but you've GOT to admit it smells REAL fishy for them to resign RIGHT after the news came out, wouldn't you say? «
Very logical comment...we shall see the outcome !
from GermanJW:
"Pay Attention to Yourselves and to All the Flock", p. 111:
In cases where it is established that a serious sin was
actually committed, the judicial committee should consider such factors as these: [...]
Was his confession voluntary, or did he have to be ac-
cused by others before confessing?
Was his reluctance to speak more a result of deep shame
than of lack of repentance?”
Great, dear German friend!
I do agree with you. To whom, besides
us, shall we apply this statement....???
from Cirona_Celtic:
« In the wake of this, I phoned the UN myself, and I was told that there is a new NGO directory coming out in 2 weeks. How convenient for the WTS! They will be removed by then, and can refer to it when pulling the wool over the dubs eyes. «
Thanks for the information. We’ll be patient and see the result.
from Prisca:
« Thank you Hawkaw for your persistance and hard work! Thanks also to Zev and the others that investigated this great work... »
You’re right on target ! - Hypocrisy, Lie and Deceit !!!
To Alan : Thanks for your informative and accurate answers !
I do appreciate them very much.
Kent : I’m still preparing more « ...things « that you’ll receive
via one of my friends. Thanks for all your excellent work.
Greetings, to you all, James Charles MacHislopp

Mormons' newly occupied church shut down
MORMON TEMPLE OPENED IN UFA
Mir religii, 29 May 2001
Adherents of the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) of Ufa officially opened their worship premises, one of the first in Russia, AiF Novosti agency reports. The building, erected near the city hall of the capital of Bashkiria, was constructed according to western standards and is equipped with modern security systems and valued at 2.5 million dollars.
Speaking at the ceremony, the chairman of the Council of Religious Affairs of the republic's cabinet of ministers, Anvar Muratshin, noted that it is possible to pose technical questions in various inspections to owners of new buildings, and they should not be taken as restrictions upon believers on the part of authorities. By a strange coincidence, on the same day the worship facilities were closed by the state inspection board. The basis for this was uncompleted construction on neighboring property. However, in the words of the head of local Mormons, Dmitry Egoshina, this was an unfortunate misunderstanding and the question will be resolved in the next few work days. Prosecutor dogs Jehovah's Witnesses
MOSCOW PROSECUTOR PURSUES BAN ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
from Jehovah's Witnesses, Office of Public Information, 29 May 2001
On 30 May the Moscow City Court will hear an appeal by the prosecutor’s office in Moscow’s Northern Administrative District against Judge Yelena Prokhoricheva’s historic decision on 23 February to dismiss charges against Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Mr. S. Belikov, Senior Counsellor of Justice, called for a re-trial, arguing: "I consider the court ruling illegal, unfounded, and subject to reversal." The prosecutor’s office is using their interpretation of the 1997 law on Religious Freedom in an attempt to ban Jehovah’s Witnesses in Moscow.
On 15 March 2001 the Russian newspaper Kommersant quoted the first Russian judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Vladimir Tumanov, as being "severely critical" of the methods employed by the prosecutor’s office in trying to ban Jehovah’s Witnesses in Moscow. He "warned" the chairman of the Supreme Court of Russia that the Court in Strasbourg has ruled in favour of Jehovah’s Witnesses against other European countries in a number of cases.
Artur Leontyev, lawyer for Jehovah’s Witnesses, pointed out that "the elongated trial process is delaying re-registration and preventing 10,000 Witnesses in Moscow from renovating and building places of worship." Jehovah’s Witnesses were re-registered in Russia by the Russian Ministry of Justice on April 29, 1999. However, Moscow has persistently refused to come in line with the Federal Government and 360 communities across Russia which have already legally recognised Jehovah’s Witnesses.
"The case has attracted international attention because it indicates whether Russia is willing to live with a variety of faiths and abide by its international agreements", said Vasilii Kalin, chairman for Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia. (posted 30 May 2001)
MOSCOW'S JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES FACE NEW CHALLENGE
Agence France Presse, 30 May 2001
Moscow's Jehovah's Witnesses are facing a new ban after an appeals court on Wednesday overturned a lower court's ruling allowing them to practice in the Russian capital, the RIA Novosti agency reported.
The appeal was brought by the state prosecutor's office and a group called "Defence Committee against Sects," made up of relatives of people belonging to the organisation.
After a trial lasting over two years, a Moscow court in February refused to ban the city's branch of Jehovah's Witnesses despite support for such a move by experts.
The Moscow branch has been accused of "breaking up families, inciting its members to suicide and harming their life and health" through not allowing its members to have blood transfusions.
The group says its members number 250,000 in Russia, some 10,000 of them in Moscow. (Copyright 2001 Agence France Presse, posted 31 May 2001)

"2.7 It would seem that the kind of tone and measures adopted with respect to the so-called “sectarian” groups during the Soviet period have resurfaced since the mid-1990s. Thus, in a document of the Ministry of the Interior dated 23 October 1996, more specifically, in a paragraph setting out measures to combat “organized crime”, a number of “foreign sects” are considered to be undesirable as they could contribute to social disorder.
This document, drawn up on the basis of contributions from the Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Security Service (FSB), the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Welfare and the services of the Procurator General of the Russian Federation, contains references to the True Orthodox Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Unification Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and the New Apostolic Church.
These sects “are accused of being ‘asocial’, of rejecting constitutional obligations, of endangering the moral, psychological and physical health of citizens and of having attracted children into their ranks and broken up families”.
According to the document “the religious groups use humanitarian aid to attract into their ranks Russian citizens, particularly young people, and infiltrate educational, military and scientific institutions” (Dennen, 1997). There are also accusations of espionage, which was the classic charge during the Soviet period (17). In addition to the argument based on national identity – the True Orthodox Church being that much more vulnerable since it rejects, within Orthodoxy itself, the identification of the Russian Orthodox Church with Russia itself – there are two other political lines of argument used in the past: the need for the State to control religious movements and, a specifically Soviet argument, the “besieged citadel” argument based on a fear of the incursion of movements from abroad.
Missionaries are still often seen as agents of imperialism and as the destroyers of national unity, particularly in the Caucasus, in the Far East and in the European frontier regions, such as Kaliningrad. More recently, a directive from the Ministry of National Education dating from summer 2000 repeated the same kind of accusation against 700 foreign religious groups, including the True Orthodox Church, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Salvation Army and requested the principals of educational establishments to show the greatest vigilance against the risks of infiltration.
This traditional perception of the so-called sectarian religious groups reflects a particular view of the relationship between the religious and political spheres and the continuing force of the model of the relationship between the dominant national church and the State."

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "TOTALITARIAN SECTS--21st-CENTURY THREAT" HELD
Sobornost, 26 April 2001
An international conference, "Totalitarian sects--21st century threat," was held 23-25 April 2001 in the St. Nicholas Orthodox Educational Center in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The first deputy director of the Department on Relations with the Public of the administration of Nizhny Novgorod, Igor Simonov, delivered greetings to the conference from the head of the city, Yury Isakovich Lebedev.
In addition to Orthodox participants, addresses of greetings were delivered at the conference by the head of the Ecclesiastical Board of Muslims of Nizhny Novgorod and Nizhny Novgorod province, Mufti Umar-khazrat Idrisov, and the head of the Jewish religious community of Nizhny Novgorod province, Eduard Mikhailovich Chaprak. The conference was attended by Catholic representatives, the pastor of the Evangelical Christians-Baptists church, Nikolai Sergeevich Bichkov, and the secretary for issues of religious freedom of the Volgo-Viatsk conference of Seventh-day Adventist Christians, Vitaly Semenovich Bakhtin.
Conference participants included scholars and religious leaders from Germany, France, Cyprus, Denmark, and China. Among the foreign participants were the chairman of the Inter-ministerial Commission on the Struggle against Sects of the prime minister of the French republic, Alen Viven, and the American writer Gerald Armstrong, the former personal archivist of R. Hubbard who later broke with Scientology and published a lot of critical material about the activity of this organization. Among the Russian participants in the conference were the publicists Deacon Andrei Kuraev and Professor Alexander Dvorkin.
The conference adopted a "Concluding Document," a "Special Determination," pertaining to the neo-pentecostal charismatic movement and containing a negative assessment of it, as well as a second "Special Determination," devoted to issues of Orthodox evangelistic work on the diocesan level.
In the concluding document conference participants expressed concern that "totalitarian sects (destructive cults) are actively attempting to penetrate and invade agencies of education, health services, governmental administration, manufacture, and commerce. In doing so they often change their names and disguise themselves, take recourse to confessional anonymity and pseudonyms, and often operate under the cover of false organizations they create that do not advertise but rather conceal their ties with the sect." They also began an initiative "for introducing amendments and additions to legislation of the Russian federation or adopting new legislative acts for the purpose of introducing strict control, limitation, or complete prohibition of the activity of totalitarian sects (destructive cults) and groups that fall under that definition. In doing this it would be possible to use the legislative experience of such European countries as France, Belgium, Germany, and Austria." The authors of the document emphasized especially that "in speaking of totalitarian sects (destructive cults), we do not have in mind new religious movements but are talking about groups whose ideology and practice are dangerous for the individual and society."
A list of the most dangerous sects in the view of conference participants was published in an appendix to the document.
It included in particular the "Church of Scientology"
and other Hubbardist organizations
(centers of dianetics, "Narkanon," "Crimanon," and the like),
"Jehovah's Witnesses,"
"Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons),
"Unification Church" and other Moonie organizations
(Federation of families for peace in all the world," etc.),
"Society of Krishna Consciousness" and other
neo-Krishnaite missions in the West,
the "New Acropolis,"
"Sinton of Koslov,
"Church of the Last Testament" (Vissarion sect),
cult of Porfiry Ivanov, "Reiki,"
and many other organizations.
During the entire three days of the conference picketing of the Orthodox Educational Center was conducted by a group of Scientology adherents from Moscow, led by the secretary for public communications of the Department on Official Questions of the Hubbard Humanitarian Center, Yuliia Azbenova. Near the center the picketers conducted a pantomime, tying a person to a tree with a sign on his chest saying "Scientologist," which symbolized, in the thinking of the Scientology adherents, the persecution of this organization. Scientology adherents who were present in the meeting room interrupted conference speakers about ten times. (tr. by PDS, posted 26 April 2001)
IN THE MOSCOW OBLAST CITY OF CHEKHOV, ILL-WISHERS BURN AN EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN CHURCH TO THE GROUND
Blagovest-Info News Agency, 18 April 2001
On the evening of April 17, unknown ill-wishers burned to the ground the Chekhov-based "Grace of Christ" church of Evangelical Christians.
As the pastor of this church, Pyotr Barankevich, informed Blagovest, on April 17 at exactly 11:30 p.m., three bottles filled with flammable liquid were thrown into the church building from the street. At that time, the 73-year-old mother of the pastor, Mariya Barankevich, was in the building. She was able to inform her son about what was happening over the phone. Arriving at the scene in a car, Pyotr Barankevich pulled his mother out of the burning building and then took her to the hospital with signs of smoke inhalation poisoning.
At the same time, members of the church asked the Chekhov OVD for help because they connected the arson with threats that Pyotr Barankevich had received on April 9 over the phone. An anonymous caller expressed his anger at the active evangelization efforts of the protestants in the "Orthodox city." According to witnesses, the police "responded to the call, but only stood aside and watched the fire."
Appearing on April 18 at the scene of the blaze, Inspector Vasily Shchitov, along with an inspector of the Chekhov fire department, inspected with Pyotr Barankevich the remains of the building and the area surrounding the church. In the course of their inspection in the yard, two more bottles were found. As the police officer suggested, the arsonist, in throwing one of the bottles, broke one against the doorway of the building. The second bottle, for some reason, was not broken. Thus, three bottles filled with flammable liquid were thrown into the building; their remains were found within the reception room and the nursery. Pyotr Barankevich believes that the attackers knew that he, his wife and his four children occasionally spend the night in the church. That is why, says the pastor, the bottles were thrown specifically into those rooms. According to Pyotr Barankevich, the inspector informed him that the record of the inspection will be handed over to an investigator of the Chekhov prosecutor's office.
At noon on April 18, the second pastor of the Chekhov-based "Grace of Christ" church of Evangelical Christians, Igor Rakov, met with one of the most influential Orthodox priests of Chekhov, the rector of the St. John the Forerunner church, Father Georgy, and held a 30-minute conversation with him. He informed him of the arson and the anti-protestant threats that Pyotr Barankevich received. The Orthodox priest called the arson an act of vandalism, while noting that among the Orthodox clergy of the Chekhov district there is "anti-sectarian sentiment." However, he doubted that any Orthodox priest would "bless" the arson.
The Chekhov-based "Grace of Christ" church of Evangelical Christians was founded in 1997 as a result of a schism within the local Evangelical Christian-Baptist church. The reason for the schism was differences over questions of evangelization. Pyotr Barankevich, being a proponent of active evangelization among the populace, founded the independent "Grace of Christ" church of Evangelical Christians. HOUSE OF PRAYER TORCHED IN CHEKHOV
Radiotserkov, 26 April 2001
On 17 April a residential dwelling in which the service of the Evangelical Christian church of the city of Chekhov was set afire. The mother of the pastor, who lived in this building, received burns and spent twelve hours in the resuscitation ward. Near the burned-out building on Soviet street the district inspector and fire department investigator found bottles with flammable liquid and ignition fuses. Nevertheless, according to some reports, the police insist that the building caught fire by "self-combustion."
The "Grace of Christ" church of Chekhov was registered by the Department of Justice of Moscow province in 1997 and was reregistered in 1999. Services have been conducted at the premises of the city theatre, although because of the onset of harassment of "nontraditional" religious association, the church was denied rental of the premises and was forced to conduct its meetings in the aforementioned private home. Believers have met regularly there since 1966 (sic-?).
Previously the administration of the city of Chekhov prohibited the showing of the "Jesus" film in movie theatres (an event in whose planning various evangelical association of the city participated). Initially the prohibition was justified on the basis of a flu epidemic, but later there appeared in the local newspaper an article, "Beware, Sect!," in which all these associations were called "destructive and totalitarian sects," that are simply trying to "destroy the foundations of the holy Orthodox faith," and the "Jesus" film was called sacrilege.
According to the pastor of the "Grace of Christ" church, Petr Barankevich, on 9 April 2001 an unknown person telephoned his home and said that if the pastor did not cease his activity, "he would very much regret it," On 17 April the building was set afire.
The Slavic Legal Center is concerned about the recently growing instances of extreme manifestation of religious intolerance. In just the past month a protestant church in Lipetsk was fired upon and a Baptist pastor was killed in Ivanovo. The burning of the building in Chekhov in which an innocent woman suffered is just another link in this chain. Attorneys of the Slavic Legal Center view these events as a direct consequently of the "educational": activity of sect fighters, of which the best known is the American citizen Alexander Dvorkin. In particular, in one of his recent publication he included among the destructive cults the Baptists ("Vidnovskie vesti" newspaper, 31 March 2001), which is a new page in sectarian studies, a "science" that this activist promotes with evident persistence. As experience shows, such publications are by no means harmless and the have produced tragic incidents in our country. (tr. by PDS, posted 26 April 2001)

PETERSBURG COURT RECOGNIZES JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES AS SECT
ITAR-TASS, 28 February 2000
St. Petersburg. A decision of the Dzerzhinsky federal court of the central district of St. Petersburg has gone into effect, denying satisfaction of the suit brought by a member of the religious organization of Jehovah's Witnesses, Marina Slobodian, against the newspaper "Novyi Peterburg" for protection of her honor and dignity. This was reported to an ITAR-TASS correpondent today at the federal court.
As a member of this organization and as its attorney, Marina Slobidian filed suit against the paper over publication of a letter from her father "Who will return my daughter and grandson to me?" He wrote that he had not seen his grandson for several years and could not communicate with him even by phone because of his daughter's prohibition. The reason for this, in his opinion, was his attack upon the organization in a televized film shown on the TV channel "Peterburg," in which he expressed concern over his grandson's destroyed childhood.
M. Slobidian accused the newspaper of interference in her private life and use of the critical word "sect," which, in her opinion, violated her honor and dignity.
The judicial investigation went on about two years. The court came to the conclusion that the information reported in the mass media about Jehovah's Witnesses corresponded to reality.
Having studied items from dictionaries and encyclopedias, the court also came to the conclusion that the use in the newspaper and television broadcast of the concept of "sect" is generally recognized and that it is used with respect to religious organizations that profess views of a narrow group of people in contrast to the overwhelming majority.
Consequently it "cannot offend anybody's feelings," said the court's decision. (tr. by PDS)

[Photo of St. Petersburg Governor Yakovlev carrying his grandchild. To the right of this are boldprint headlines of previous negative articles about Jehovah’s Witnesses in Rossiyskaya gazeta]
We hardly would have returned to this topic so soon, had it not been for such a furious reaction from our readers: from both Jehovah’s Witnesses’ supporters, as well as from those who have suffered from their activity, and who are now attempting to get the attention of authorities at all levels to tell them just what a danger this organization actually represents.
We had no doubt that Jehovah’s Witnesses would not leave our publication unattended. Quite some time ago a curious document, which was drafted at their Administrative Center, came into our dossier. The date: December 3, 1998.
In essence, it is rather strict directive that states "…it would be good if the editorial offices of newspapers where articles about us appear were to receive our response", and further spells out exactly how the letters should be written. However, it turns out that this document is not for the eyes of the rank and file members of the organization, but exclusively for the body of elders: "Do not make copies of this letter. Do not place this letter or the addresses [note of author: where to write] on the bulletin board." Judging by the instructions, letters will also be sent to the head of the department of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation responsible for the registration of religious associations, to the public prosecutor’s office, and to other addresses indicated in the document.
A certain Roman Shamrai sent a letter to our editorial office in which he accused Rossiyskaya gazeta of spreading non-factual information and claimed the author of the article is misinformed.
Does the end justify the means?
From Roman Shamrai’s letter to our editorial office: "Beside all the unobjective appraisals of the activity of Jehovah’s Witnesses, your article indicated that people who profess the religion of Jehovah’s Witnesses are ‘sectarians,’ and ‘very dangerous’. In actual fact they are honest, law-abiding citizens of their countries…"
If not so long ago smiling, and, as a rule, well-dressed people, were able to converse well with strangers stopped you somewhere on the street or unexpectedly turned up at the doorstep of your home with the offer to discuss the Bible together, then nowadays Jehovah’s Witnesses have begun to preach in St. Petersburg… by telephone. And they not only telephone us at home, but bother workers with their offers at various institutions, institutes of higher learning, and commercial firms.
So just who are these people who are addressing us with their ingratiating voices and who have unleashed on St. Petersburg a truly aggressive campaign towards increasing the number of their members? This is the question I that asked first and foremost of Aleksei Shvechikov, the Director of the Center of International Institutes of Higher Learning for problems of Science and Religion, Senior Lecturer, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, and author of a book about the religious, social-political, and ideological doctrine of Jehovism.
"In my view," says Aleksei Nikolayevich, "the main line of strategy of the Jehovists has become more clearly visible; they sincerely wish to replace traditional Orthodoxy with their own false teaching, and believe me, this is the primary and most serious danger. It is exactly this that explains their present vigorous onslaught.
"Look, even Sergei Ivanenko, author of a book which defends the Jehovists, and whom the Witnesses love to cite, could not restrain himself from mentioning what Jehovah’s Witnesses carefully hide: ‘Forms of Protestantism that have become deeply rooted in Russia remain on the fringe of public and religious life; they have not become, and it is unlikely that they can become in the foreseeable future, an idealistic and moral foundation for the development of honest business. Will Jehovah’s Witnesses be able to meet this challenge?’ It’s hard to say it more directly than that …
"The author of the letter to your editorial office was correct only in one thing," continues Aleksei Nikolayevich, "It was by no means just today that Jehovism decided to engage in criticizing Christianity from within as it were. Today, across the ocean, it is evident that the Brooklyn Governing Body, has realized that the situation in Russia has gotten to the point where it is possible to bring their plans to fruition. Since at present there is practically no opposition, even from the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church, Jehovist congregations and Kingdom Halls are growing all over Russia like mushrooms after a rain. And the newspaper’s alarm on behalf of St. Petersburg is justified, since St. Petersburg has become the sect-capital of the country. Clearly, the Brooklyn center is becoming richer it is acquiring real estate in Russia. But can it really be the authorities are powerless to oppose this?"
"The religion of the Jehovists has long since turned into its opposite an ideology. Only they cannot publicly acknowledge this fact, for this would be tantamount to suicide. On the contrary, the more ideological this organization becomes, the more impudently it tries to prove its ‘true’ religiosity. It must be acknowledged that the Jehovists are nevertheless successful at blurring people’s awareness by verbal tightrope-walking, presenting lies as truth. They are successful thanks to a well-oiled machine of ideological and psychological indoctrination. But this deception cannot work forever. And it is necessary to speak more about what consequences await people who are under such illusions."
"Grandma, you’re from Satan…"
From the letter of Roman Shamrai to the editorial office: "The majority of Jehovah’s Witnesses have wonderful close families. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not practice violence and have no intention of forcing anyone to follow their teachings…"
A barrage of calls came down on Rossiyskaya gazeta’s office in St. Petersburg after our last article. People who had lost their loved ones due to the Jehovists thanked the newspaper for raising the issue. One of the women who called requested a meeting with me:
"Jehovists seek people with an open heart, they find them and then turn them into soulless people. The sect broke up my daughter’s family and then completely took her and my grandson away from me. We live as though we were strangers. I have to tell you about it…"
…Galina Semyonovna and I wandered along the paths of the park which was covered with a carpet of yellow maple leaves and I could not help but notice how she kept glancing [with a face] full of anguish and pain at the young children who were walking with their grandmothers in the park on a Saturday afternoon. This former elementary school teacher has been deprived of delightful association with her own grandson for many years now…
"Just imagine," she sighs, "On Monday it’s Andrey’s birthday. He turns eight, and I can’t give him a present on that day. Jehovists don’t celebrate birthdays or any of the other holidays for that matter…I remember I decided to surprise my grandson with a New Year’s tree. I decorated it and got a present ready and heard from his lips a ghastly ‘Grandma, you’re from Satan…’
"From the time he turned three years old Julia began to drag the child to meetings of the Jehovists. The brothers and sisters got their tight clutches on her, and she quit work at the kindergarten, made ends meet with odd jobs, wasting all her time at the meetings, and began preaching together with the child. She taught Andrei how to preach. She keeps accurate notes for reports, where, when and how much she preached. Do you know how Andrei learned to count? My daughter would give him math problems: "Petya handed out four magazines and Masha handed out three. How many Watchtower magazines did the children hand out altogether?’
"No matter what my son-in-law tried to do, it wouldn’t work. He tried to gain custody of the child during the divorce proceedings, but the court took the side of the mother-Jehovist. And now the boy’s life is taking a different course: He doesn’t know how to associate with normal children, he’s introverted and looks ill… Is this really the way I dreamed I would ever see him! The sectarians have deprived him of a normal childhood. Imagine, we live across from the Peter and Paul fortress, but the child has never in his life seen the colorful, festive fireworks. He simply has not been allowed to go to the window, after all, this is from the Devil as well… So just what will become of my grandson? How am I to struggle for him? What happy families do the Jehovists, who are sowing unhappiness and pain, have the right to write about?"
And so, not the editorial office, but you, Roman Shamrai, are misleading us with your letter. For example, in listing the countries where the activity of Jehovah’s Witnesses is banned, you hint at their specific political structure. But for some reason or another you forget to add along with this that this year the Council of Europe has called to step up the battle against the Witnesses, and that in the most developed nations, where you are so especially proud of your activity, there exists around 500 centers dedicated to exposing Jehovah’s Witnesses. And it is no coincidence that there is now a massive amount of information on the Internet exposing them. The world has sensed the danger…
As for the Jehovists supposed non-violence, you are once again deceiving us, because you know perfectly well that is practically impossible for anyone to leave the sect except in "cement overshoes" at the bottom of a river…
I have been reading David Reed’s book, Behind the Scenes at the Watchtower. And it is impossible not to believe a man who has spent more than a decade among the Witnesses.
Who peeks through the keyhole of the bedroom?
From the letter of Roman Shamrai to the editorial office: "Jehovah’s Witnesses are recognized as the most honest people in the Federal Republic."
And now a few words about how the "orderly and honest people behave." But this information is not for Roman Shamrai, who was so offended by the article in the Rossiyskaya gazeta, but for one of my colleagues, a long-time acquaintance, to whom the Witnesses seem so likeable, contemporary, and energetic.
It has become clear that members of the Watchtower Society yes, that’s what Jehovah’s Witnesses call themselves who love to highlight their exceptional orderliness and honesty, have no qualms, as it turns out, about intruding into the bedroom of married couples in order to point out what is acceptable and what is not in their sexual relations. In his book, former Witness David Reed writes about this in detail.
As it turns out, as early as 1972 the main magazine of the Jehovists, The Watchtower, touched upon the question of the propriety of various forms of conduct in the marital bed. From this point onward members of the organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses began to be accountable before the leaders for their conduct in the bedroom. Those who crossed the boundaries were threatened with being interrogated before a judicial committee of the congregation and… expulsion from the organization. Wives started to inform on their husbands to the local elders, accusing them of improper conduct in bed. The elders would summon the husbands for interrogation. Married couples were forced to reveal their intimate lives before outsiders! Jehovah’s Witnesses did what normal people would consider loathsome, repulsive, and impossible. This really makes me want to ask my acquaintance; would he want to see for example, his daughter giving testimony to such a commission?
Who can speak well of a murderer-mother?
From the letter of Roman Shamrai to the editorial office: "Many Russian families have been practicing this religion for three and four generations. They are spoken well of by neighbors, the authorities, and at work."
In preparing this material, I had the occasion to speak with many people who have run across the activity of Jehovah’s Witnesses and know about them, and not by hearsay. Petersburg journalist Oleg Zasorin, who has more than once written about the danger which they represent, recounted to me that a criminal case has been going on in the Krasnoselskiy region of Petersburg. The case was brought about because of the death of a child, who had not been in this world even a year. Danya Krivtsov died from congenital intestinal obstruction, although the doctors had a chance to save him. This would have required an operation, but once the parents found out that during the course of the operation a blood serum would be used, they declined as members of the organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
"Jehovah’s Witnesses," says Oleg Zasorin, "truly have a broad interpretation of the counsel to ‘abstain from blood’ set forth in the Acts of the Apostles. A member of the sect cannot permit himself a blood transfusion under any circumstances, even if his life depends upon it. This prohibition is elevated among them to the level of worship, and there are plenty of cases of deaths of unfortunate children.
"Two years ago three-year-old Vanya Semyonov passed away in a reanimation ward. Within one year of his death the doctors had made the terrible diagnosis; acute monoblastic leucosis. A blood transfusion was required. But the mother, a fanatical believer of the teachings of The Watchtower, did not even give the doctors the opportunity to take a blood sample for analysis. And for an entire year Vanya died a torturous death before her eyes. She brought him to the hospital already half dead and handed over a written affirmation which said: ‘I, Semyonova Galina Fyodorovna, being in sound mind and clear memory, categorically refuse the following methods of medical treatment of my son, Semyonov Ivan: blood transfusion, red corpuscle mass, plasma. I have been warned about the consequences of the absence of such treatment, including the possibility of a fatal outcome. I draw up this document on my own initiative. This is in accordance with my rights as a patient and my convictions as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.’
"I could continue," says my colleague, "about the tragedy that took place with Dima Nikitin and many others, but just how many of these ghastly cases have taken place in St. Petersburg nobody knows. But the main point for me, as well as for any sane person, is that it is completely incomprehensible how and why such a misanthropic organization can feel so free on the banks of the Neva."
A Jehovist who wrote to our editorial office noted on one page of his letter that "Citizens who profess this religion are well-spoken of by their neighbors, the authorities, and at work." But tell me, who would speak well of a mother who for the course of a year quietly watched as her son died a torturous death? Perhaps it is only you, Roman Shamrai, that thinks that murderer-mothers are so likeable? Or is just that you never heard anything like this?
Will the authorities hear us?
Two weeks have passed since Rossiyskaya gazeta published the article "Are you the Governor or Just a Witness?" The reaction from Smolnyy is the same as always silence. But perhaps the facts concerning the life and activity of Jehovah’s Witnesses will all the same force the executive and legislative authorities of not only St. Petersburg, but also other cities of Russia, where in all there are already 760 congregations of the Jehovists, where over 100,000 Russian citizens have undergone water baptism, and where over 250,000 attend meetings regularly and are ready to become "full-fledged pioneers", to stop and think. It may be that it is finally time to give some thought to the fact that in the law "On the Freedom of Conscience and on Religious Associations," particularly Article 14.2, is a distinctly enumerated list of offences which allow for the banning of the activity of a religious organization: inflicting harm to health, breaking up families, obstruction of the fulfillment of civic duties, propagating religious discord, inclining toward refusal of medical help for individuals in danger of losing life or health for religious reasons…
Spiritual terrorism is no less dangerous, isn’t it?

Overview:
Jehovah's Witnesses derive their name from:
Jehovah, an English translation of the name for God in the Hebrew Scriptures.
Witnesses which is taken from the passage in Isaiah 43:10 (and similar passages): "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord..."
They are a high intensity faith group which expects a major commitment from its membership.
They currently have about 6 million publishers and pioneers in over 75,000 congregations in more than 200 countries. In excess of 14 million people (pioneers, publishers, adherents and potential members) attended the "Lord's Evening Meal" service at the time of Passover in 1999. There are almost 1 million witnesses in the U.S., about 111,000 in Canada. 25
They have expanded widely throughout Europe and Russia. J.G. Melton, an authority on religious groups, has stated: "In every single country of Europe, with one exception, the second largest religious group in that country is the Jehovah's Witnesses....They are number two in all of Eastern Europe and they are heading that way in Russia." 3 We have been unable to verify the accuracy of these data. The Jehovah's Witnesses 1999 statistical report shows that Witnesses total less than 2% of the population of Curaçao, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Norfolk Island, St. Eustatius, St. Helena, and St. Maarten. 25 They form less than 1% of the population of all other countries in the world. For example, in countries with over 50 million population:

History:
The WTS traces their origin to Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916). After periods of being a Presbyterian, Congregationalist, skeptic, and Adventist, he organized a Bible study group in Pennsylvania in 1870. The group's intense examination of the Bible caused them to reject traditional Christian teachings on the nature of deity, and the immortality of the soul.
By 1880, 30 congregations had been formed in 7 states. Zion's Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society was incorporated in 1884. In 1896, it dropped Zion from its name. After Russell's death in 1916, the WTS's lawyer, Judge Joseph Franklin Rutherford took over the presidency. Under Rutherford's leadership, the Society became more centrally controlled. Perhaps his best known phrase was "Millions now living will never die" .
Prior to World War I, the Society had recommended that Witnesses abstain from entering the armed forces. If compelled to enter they army, they should go, but work in a non-combative role (as in medical service). 10 A group of members called Steadfasters opposed all support of World War I. Later, the Society adopted the stance of the Steadfasters.
A split occurred in 1917 over the direction and leadership of the Watchtower organization. One of the largest breakoff groups was known as The Dawn Bible Students Association of East Rutherford NJ.
In 1931, the organization became known as Jehovah's Witnesses to avoid confusion with other Bible Student groups. After Rutherford's death in 1942, Nathan Homer Knorr was elected president. Under his leadership, the WTS greatly increased its publication efforts and published their a new translation of the Bible that is used mainly by Jehovah's Witnesses. Succeeding Knorr was Frederick W. Franz (Knorr's vice-president).
Their refusal to salute the flag, to assist the war effort, to vote etc. caused them to be very unpopular in some countries. Witnesses in North American and Europe were heavily persecuted during World War II, because of their non-involvement in the armed forces and war industries. Data about their fate in Nazi Germany is sketchy and unreliable. One source states that over 90% of German church members were exterminated during the Nazi Holocaust. Other sources state that as many as 10,000 were imprisoned of whom 2,500 died. 28 The religion was banned in Canada in 1940 (one year following Canada's entry into the war). Children were expelled from school; other children were placed in foster homes; members were jailed; men who refused to enter the army were sent to work camps. They remain banned in some countries and heavily persecuted in many others.
The WTS has contributed heavily to the preservation of religious freedom in the US; they won 36 out of 45 religiously based cases that they took to the US Supreme Court between 1938 and 1955. The Jehovah's Witnesses
"have performed a signal service to democracy by their fight to preserve their civil rights, for in their struggle they have done much to secure those rights for every minority group in America. When the civil rights of any one group are invaded, the rights of no other group are safe. They have therefore made a definite contribution to the preservation of some of the most precious things in our democracy." 11
Religious Texts
They revere the Bible as the infallible, revealed word of God. In 1961, they published their own English version called New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. It is currently available (wholly or in part) in over a dozen languages, and will shortly be seen in 30. The translation was made by an anonymous group who donated their work to the WTS. Some Biblical scholars and other Christians who are not Jehovah's Witnesses have criticized the translation, implying that the original Hebrew and Greek texts have been distorted during translation to more suitably reflect WTS theology.
They publish two semi-monthly magazines for public distribution. One is the WATCHTOWER which has a circulation in excess of 22 million world-wide, in 129 languages. They also distribute the non-theologically based periodical Awake with a circulation of almost 20 million, in 81 languages. Kingdom Ministry is a monthly publication for use within the organization. (Data valid at 1998-NOV-1)
They publish many anonymously written booklets and a few videos, such as:
Jehovah's Witnesses - Proclaimers of God's Kingdom, which addresses criticism of their failed predictions
Should you Believe in the Trinity (1989) which denies the traditional Christian concept of the Trinity.
Jehovah's Witnesses, The Organization Behind the Name (1990), a video tape depicting life inside of Bethel, their head office.
Organizational Structure
The Society is organized into:
Governing Body: This is a group of anointed men in the Brooklyn NY head office. It currently consists of 11 members.
Publishers and Pioneers. These are members of both genders and all ages who actively go from door to door, attempting to convert the public. Those who are dedicated, full-time preachers are given the title Regular Pioneer. They commit to preach for 840 hours per year. Auxiliary Pioneers do 50 hours a month for one or more consecutive months. Special Pioneers are selected from among the Regular Pioneers and are sent to go wherever the need is greatest. Publishers typically go door-to-door once per week, often on Saturdays. If a publisher does not turn in her/his time for six months in a row, they are considered inactive and are given "shepherding calls" to encourage them to reactivate their ministry.
Congregations (called Kingdom Halls): Appointed members, called Overseers or Elders are each given a specific role. For example, the Presiding Overseer leads the elder meetings. The Service Overseer handles ministry issues within the congregation. Ministerial Servants handle administrative duties and assist the Elders.
Circuits are groups of about 20 congregations, served by a Circuit Overseer. The "CO" periodically visits each congregation twice annually for a one week period. Circuits also organize two day conventions for their congregations, which are held twice a year.
Districts are made up from many circuits; there are 22 districts in the United States. The District Overseer (DO) runs the district conventions which are held once a year. He also attends the circuit conventions.
A number of districts form a Branch
A number of branches for a Zone
Headquarters is in Brooklyn NY.
Beliefs about blood:
Blood Transfusion:
They refuse to accept blood transfusions and do not allow them to be given to their children. This is based upon four passages in the Bible which prohibit the consuming of blood:
Genesis 9:4 "But flesh (meat) with...blood...ye shall not eat"
Leviticus 17:12-14 "...No soul of you shall eat blood...whosoever eateth it shall be cut off"
Acts 15:29 "That ye abstain...from blood..."
Acts 21:25 "...Gentiles...keep themselves from things offered to idols and from blood..."
The WTS interprets "eating" of blood in its most general form to include accepting "transfusion of whole blood, packed RBCs, and plasma, as well as WBC and platelet administration." . Essentially all other Christian and Jewish faith groups belief that the passages refer to dietary laws; i.e. to the actual eating of meat containing blood.
Because Witnesses believe that any blood that leaves the body must be destroyed, they do not approve of an individual storing his own blood for a later autotransfusion. 24
Child Protective Services often intrude on parents' rights and take into care sick WTS children whose health or life is threatened by the lack of a blood transfusion. An adult Jehovah's Witness who willingly accepts a blood transfusion is considered to be committing a sin and might forfeit his or her eternal life. Many non WTS sources imply that the church teaches that all who have had a transfusion (even if given against their will or at an age or situation when they cannot give informed consent) will lose their eternal life. This is in error.
The 1997-FEB edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) contained a review of the book Blood on the Altar by David Reed. The reviewer wrote that if the information in the book is true, then the WTS policy on blood transfusions has "led thousands to die needlessly." 1 Unfortunately, neither JAMA nor the book reviewer have reviewed the accuracy of this data.
The WTS periodical Awake once showed pictures of Jehovah's Witnesses children who followed the churches ban on blood transfusions and died. 2 It is, of course, unknown how many would still have died if they had a transfusion. One particularly sad case occurred in the UK when a woman bled to death after giving birth to her second child. 17
An unusual court case involving a Witness and a blood transfusion occurred in Pomona, CA. Keith Cook, a drunken driver, had rammed his pickup truck into a stationary car, pushing it into a 55 year old woman, Jadine Russell. she was standing by the side of the road. She was a Jehovah's Witness, refused a blood transfusion, and died in hospital. Cook was found not guilty on his original murder charge, but was convicted of manslaughter. Prosecutors said Cook was responsible for the death because he caused the injuries. His lawyers argued that the immediate cause of Russell's death was her refusal of a blood transfusion. 18
There appears to be a significant movement within the medical community to minimize or eliminate blood transfusions during surgery. 20, 21, 22 The group: Associated Jehovah's Witnesses for Reform on Blood " describe themselves as "a diverse group of Witnesses from many countries, including elders and other organization officials, Hospital Liaison Committee members, Doctors, and members of the general public who have volunteered their time and energies in an effort to bring about an end to a tragic and misguided policy that has claimed thousands of lives, many of them children. promoting change within the WTS on the topic of blood transfusions." 23
Organ transplants:
In 1967, they said that organ transplants are a form of cannibalism and are to be shunned. 12 They reversed this decision in 1980 and made transplants a matter of personal conscience. 13 Unfortunately, an unknown number of Jehovah's Witnesses had died between 1967 and 1980 because they had refused available transplants.
Bone marrow transplants:
In 1963, they considered that any fraction of blood was a nutrient and not to be used in medical treatment. 15 In 1978, they reversed this decision for certain blood fractions used for the treatment of hemophiliacs. 16 In 1984, they declared that accepting a bone marrow transplant was up to the individual conscience. 14
Other Beliefs:
Many Jehovah's Witnesses beliefs, (e.g. inerrancy of the Bible, the Virgin Birth, Jesus giving his life as a ransom for past and future humanity, opposition to divorce, homosexuality, pre-marital sex and abortion, the power of Satan, etc.) are similar to those of Fundamentalist Christianity.
Exceptions are:
They do not believe in the Trinity. Instead, they follow a strict monotheism, in which:
Jehovah is the Supreme Being,
Jesus is the son of God, a created being. Christ is believed to have originally existed in a pre-human state as the Archangel Michael. He later took human form as a man like any other person, except that he was sinless at birth and remained so through life. After the crucifixion, Christ died and was resurrected as an invisible, non-material, glorious spirit creature.
The Holy Ghost is not a separate entity, but is simply the method by which God interacts with the world.
The Heavenly Kingdom took effect in 1914 with the invisible enthronement of Christ as King. It is currently occupied by a little flock or Anointed Class of about 135,400 people. All were selected after Christ's ascension into heaven at Pentecost (33 CE) and during subsequent centuries. The selection of the full complement of 144,000 was completed in 1935. Some 8,600 are still living on earth. They will spend eternity with God and Christ as spirit creatures. The latter number increases slightly from time to time as anointed but unfaithful members are replaced.
They reject the traditional symbol of Christianity, the cross, as being of pagan origin. They translate the Greek word from the Christian Scriptures "stauros" as "torture stake", and believe that Jesus was crucified on a single upright wooden stake with no cross beam.
Christ's Second Coming was not a physical return to earth. It was an invisible event in 1914 in which Satan and Christ engaged in a heavenly battle. Afterwards, Christ began to the rule the Heavenly Kingdom as King of Kings. Satan was expelled to Earth. World War I was a visible sign of Satan's earthly and the beginning of the woes that would accompany the "last days of this system of things."
In the very near future, the battle of Armageddon will begin. Jesus, under Jehovah's divine rage, will execute vengeance upon the rest of Christendom and followers of other religions. The WTS refers to other religions as Babylon the Great, the world empire of false religion (Revelation 17). After much suffering, massive human extermination and many upheavals, the world will be purified. God's Kingdom, a theocracy, will be established on earth for 1000 years. This is known as the millennium or the New System of things. The "other sheep" (those who survive Armageddon, will live in peace in the newly created utopia. They will be joined by the worthy dead who have been resurrected.
After the 1000 years of God's Kingdom, Satan and his demons will be released for a short time. They, and their human followers, will then be destroyed.
People who die before Armageddon actually cease to exist. They expire and their body deteriorates and returns to dust. At the time of resurrection, God will create a new body for each believer. It will be similar to their former shell, but without the imperfections. They will resume life with their original personality and memories.
They totally deny the existence of the traditional Christian view of Hell. Satan is regarded as having created the concept of Hellfire in order to turn people against God. They believe that hell is the "common grave of mankind" where people go when they die. They are not conscious there. Unbelievers simply cease to exist at death.
Salvation requires that one must accept doctrines as interpreted by the Governing Body from the Bible, be baptized as a Jehovah's Witness and follow the program of works as laid out by the Governing Body. (Evangelical Christians deny the necessity of "works" which is implicit in the third requirement).
Practices:
During the year 2000, 6 million Jehovah's Witnesses spent 1.1 billion hours in various evangelistic activities in 235 countries, including the distribution of over 700 million pieces of printed material, and thousands of audio and video cassettes. 27
They recognize only one day of celebration: the Memorial of Christ's Death at the time of Passover. Although they estimate that Jesus was born on October 2, this date is not celebrated. Members who are found celebrating "worldly" or "Pagan" holidays, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Canada Day, Halloween, etc.) may be disfellowshipped (excommunicated).
They do not have a Sabbath; they regard all days as holy. There are five meetings each week:
Public Talk usually each Sunday, when an Elder (or rarely a Ministerial Servant) will deliver a talk about a specific topic
Watchtower Study usually follows the public talk; it is a lesson based on a study article in the current Watchtower
Theocratic Ministry School usually occurs on a weekday evening. Speakers practice giving talks and witnessing
Service Meeting usually follows the Theocratic Ministry School. This includes training for various ministry activities. At times, elders will address specific items and concerns for the congregation
Book Study held sometime during the week where a portion of a Watchtower publication is studied in depth.
There is a great deal of misinformation about WTS' limitations on access to the Bible. In reality, members are free to use Bible translations, commentaries, dictionaries etc. which are produced by non-Watchtower publishers. They are encouraged to read the Bible. Each Witness is given a goal of reading of the entire Bible in one year. They encourage Bible study through using of WTS publications as guides.
They only observe two sacraments:
Baptism: this is done by full immersion of an adult after the person has been converted to the faith.
Lord's Supper: this is done once a year at the Memorial of Christ's death. Only the approximately 8600 Jehovah's Witnesses who are part of the 144,000 Anointed Class actually partake in the meal; the general membership (formerly called the Jonadab Class and now called the Great Crowd) are present and observe.
They regard the world as being under the control of Satan. For this reason they do not run for public office, salute the flag, join the Armed Forces, or vote in elections.
They are absolutely non-racist. However, this policy appears to have been not followed in some localities. 19
Like many conservative faith groups, they do not give equal opportunity for women to lead. Power and authority within the family and the WTS are reserved for men only.
Motivated by a desire for self-preservation, they are dedicated to the principle of religious freedom and have pursued dozens of cases of religious discrimination and persecution to the United States Supreme Court and through the court systems of other countries.
A variety of methods of enforcing membership discipline are used.
Members may be reproved in private during a meeting with the elders. A public announcement may be later made to the congregation that they had been reproved and found to be repentant.
Members who are found guilty of serious violations of WTS teachings and practices, and who refuse to repent are disfellowshipped. Fellow members are then required to shun him/her completely, having no contact. If the disfellowshipped person is a family member, the official position of the WTS is that they are to be treated normally within the family. However, they are made to understand that their actions are disapproved of. There is no discussion about church matters in their presence. Many families do not follow the official policy and totally shun the disfellowshipped member.
Disfellowshipping can have a devastating effect on a person whose entire religious, family and social life are grounded in the Society. It has occasionally resulted in suicide.
Opposition to the WTS:
Much criticism has been directed at the Society because of its unique beliefs, its severe criticism of other faith groups, its refusal to accept blood transfusions, its withdrawal from civic responsibilities, and its continued unsuccessful efforts to predict the date of Armageddon.
Some examples of the opposition are:
In 1913, Russell was criticized for selling miracle wheat seed at an inflated price. When he and the seed was ridiculed in a local paper, he sued the newspaper and lost. Government witnesses testified that the wheat was of an inferior grade. He never profited personally from the sales; the proceeds only amounted to $1800. Contrary to the statements of WTS detractors, there is no evidence that Russel intended fraud. He apparently believed that the wheat was more miraculous than it really was.
Rev. J.J. Ross of Hamilton ON wrote a pamphlet denouncing Russell's morals and qualifications for the ministry. He misquoted court transcripts. For example he stated that Russel claimed to know Greek; in reality, Russel only claimed to know the Greek alphabet.
The WTS translation of the Bible has been criticized severely for changing the meanings of many key passages by insertion of words, such as other and a in places in a way that reverses the meaning of the verses. Some have claimed that the WTS's Translation Committee was almost devoid of credentials; all but one apparently were untrained in Biblical Greek and Hebrew.
They have predicted that the start of Armageddon would occur in 1914, 1918, 1920, 1925, and 1941. None of the prophecies have come true. Each failed estimate caused some disillusioned members to leave the organization. The WTS reported that 1975 was the 6000th anniversary of the creation of Adam in the Garden of Eden in 4026 BCE. This prompted much of the WTS membership to assume that 1975 was a likely date for Armageddon. The WTS seems to have done little to suppress that expectation. That year also passed uneventfully. Some of the membership, without official WTS sanction, interpreted Psalms 90:10 as defining the length of a generation to be 80 years. Since 1914 plus 80 equals 1994, they predicted Armageddon would occur around that year. That prophecy, like so many by other faith groups, also failed. Some Jehovah's Witnesses now believe that the end will happen exactly 6000 years after the creation of Eve. They believe that Eve may have been created many years after Adam, at an unknown date. This belief contradicts an article in a 1968 issue of Awake magazine, which stated that: "According to reliable Bible chronology, Adam and Eve were created in 4026 B.C.E." 26 That would have placed the end back in 1975 -- an event that didn't happen.
Until recently, the WTS taught that Armageddon will start soon, before the last of generation of Jehovah's Witnesses born around the time of Christ's enthronement in 1914 died off. This concept of the generation of 1914 has recently been abandoned, as described in the 1995-NOV-1 issue of Watchtower. This change effectively removes precise dates from the WTS prophetic predictions. They still anticipate an end in the near future. But as a matter of policy, they are not estimating when it will happen.
Copyright Concerns:
Early 1997:
The Watchtower Society in Norway, on behalf of The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, filed a filed police charges against ex-Jehovah's Witnesses Kent Steinhaug and Jan Haugland of Norway. The defendants are alleged to have posted copies on the Internet of a confidential "Elder's Manual" called "Pay Attention to Yourselves and to All the Flock" The document was originally written in 1977, and most recently updated and copyrighted in 1991. It is normally loaned only to elders in good standing. If an elder loses his position in the organization, he is required to return the book. As of 1997-JUN-30, the text of the manual is available at:
http://home2.inet.tele.dk/carloc/
http://www.hedning.no/hedning/jv/index.htm
The police later dropped the charges.
Mid 1998:
In 1998-JUL, the WTS took action against A Common Bond, an international support group for ex-Jehovah's Witnesses who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. They have a web site, provided by GeoCities. A Witness attorney complained to GeoCities that the web site violated its copyright by showing a photograph taken from the WTS publication, The Watchtower. The picture showed a number of same-sex couples embracing. The most logical response would have been for GeoCities to have simply deleted the picture file from the WTS directory. Instead, they shut down the web site almost immediately. It was restored 4 days later without the photograph. Webmaster Jim Moon commented: "Gays and lesbians who have been kicked out of the JWs are in a special need for all the emotional and spiritual support they can get. If JWs don't conform completely to the sect's doctrines and practices, including a strict prohibition against merely being gay, they are disfellowshipped,' which is a severe punishment. It amounts to total ostracism."
The WTS' official policy towards gays and lesbians is to allow them to continue as members, if they remain sexually inactive. This means that they remain celibate. Further, because of Jesus' statement that to lust after another person is to commit adultery with them in your heart, then a gay or lesbian must attempt to suppress their desire, longing, feelings of attractiveness, love, sexual fantasies etc. towards others. Homosexual Witnesses are expected to refrain from both sexual activity and sexual thoughts. Although celibacy can be chosen, it is quite impossible to totally control and eliminate one's feelings. The Witness' policy places an immense emotional load on its gay and lesbian membership who try to live up to the group's expectations.
As in all large organizations, official policies must be administered by junior officials. Some consider even celibate gays and lesbians as unsuitable for membership.
Government oppression:
The Jehovah's Witness are under economic attack by the government of France. They had been denied the corporation status Germany, because of alleged insufficient loyalty to the state. However, a decision by the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany should reverse this.

WWW Resources:
There seem to be relatively few WWW sites maintained by Jehovah's Witnesses. The WTS has apparently restricted Internet participation by its members (ref. Kingdom Ministry, 1995-SEP).
The official web site of the Watchtower Society has a home page is at: http://www.watchtower.org/index.html.
The Public Affairs Office of the WTS has a web site for their "news releases, faqs, backgrounders, religious freedom issues, etc," at: http://www.jw-media.org
A web site which lists WTS regular mail addresses is at: http://www.afn.org/~witness/wtbts.html
An excellent, balanced, information page in support of the WTS is at: http://jehovah.to/
A web site supporting WTS beliefs and the New World Translation of the Bible is at: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Aegean/8249/
A rather witty glossary of JW jargon is at: http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~lnewton/glossary/
There are many WWW sites established by ex-Jehovah's Witnesses or non-Jehovah's Witnesses. Some are humorous, others critical, a few downright paranoid:
Beyond Jehovah's Witnesses is one of the more objective and gentle ex-JW web sites; it is also one of the oldest. See: http://www.beyondjw.com
The Watchtower Victims Memorial was a Web site "dedicated to the memory of Jehovah's Witnesses and their minor children who died as a result of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society's organizational decrees banning blood transfusions, organ transplants and skin grafts (1967-1980), and vaccinations, and discouraging care by psychiatrists and psychologists -- as well as other individuals whose deaths due to suicide, abandonment, etc., are attributable to the Watchtower Society." It was located at: http://www.abaweb.com/WATCHTOWERvictimsMEMORIAL/ As of 2001-FEB, it has been removed. Future plans for the site are unclear.

latest un information as of 7:00 pm eastern time (canada/us).
i spoke to the man who heads the ngo office at united nations headquarters.
i will not release his name at this point because i was asked not to by the individual who gave me the contact information.
Hello Bible Examiner and all the others,
thanks for sharing with us this experience, and
also precious information.
“What he would do.
He said that he would be willing to draw up, on UN stationary, a letter stating that the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society has voluntarily withdrawn association with the United Nations Department of Public Information as an NGO as per October 10, 2001. “
Let’s wait and see “ this letter” and its content....an OFFICIAL ONE!
Trilobite: Excellent reasoning, I do agree with you.
and I do really like this comment:
“On another note, we should emphasize the following; the article in the Guardian included the opportunity for Paul Gillies to refute the accusations. He didn't do it, or the reportere was being dishonest. Obviously it is the former. However, dubs should be encouraged to get the WTS, and Gillies in particular to explain their nonsensical remarks. Gillies is a lowdown liar and any heat that can be applied to him will be productive. If I were in charge of the WTS operation I'd dump Gillies as the idiot he is. If he gets dumped then who knows what he'll say; clearly the man has no bottom.”
Logical and true. The WTBS is not a man of courage and ...he LIED
as simple as that, but in his own eyes I do suppose it’s the old “ theocratic
war’ strategy “ theme.
Thirdson: “I take it that on Monday the UN was a "good" body and today it is a "bad" body. It would seem in withdrawing their association with the UN/DPI the WTS considers the UN to be a "bad" body. What does the UN think about that? And what about the faithful JWs?
Excellent comments! The WTBS still thinks very ...poorly about the entire
“ worldwide brotherhood ..”!
Belbab: “My thoughts are let's keep up the pressure.
For decades the WT Org has distributed millions and millions of pieces of literature that portrayed the UN as a disgusting thing. They will continue to do so. Their retreating from the NGO involvement demonstrates that their position regarding UN has not changed.
We need to point out the UN that it is imperitive for them to identify what the WT has done to their reputation by identifying them as the beast of Revelation. “
Very good indeed, “...Let’s keep up the PRESSURE “ !!!
Farkel: “Without the "beast" and the "Great(tm) harlot", the WTS has lost a major whipping boy for their message of hatred. And doom.”
Logical reamrk, their main weapon...is F E A R and HATRED !!!
R51875 : “The important thing here is that the WTBTS is not going to be able to use the status as a UN NGO to legitimize themselves with governments.”
A fine reamrk indeed, after all 20,30,60 days ago WHO would have
imagined such ...an OUTCOME!
Ciberguy : “..After the smoke clears, I only hope we have a documentation-trail that can be left for posterity.”
I do like your final comment...let’s hope we can get OUR HAND into something
T A N G I B L E !!!

i could kick myself about all this.
i read the guardian every day and yet monday, because i was late for work, i didn't bother to buy it.
now i can't help thinking, if only i'd bought a copy on monday, shown it to my family (innocently, of course) and then let them have their own doubts.
Hello Kimberly,
I'm sorry you've missed the Guardian
edition for Monday 8th...but if you like a photocopy
of all the page (9) with all, or with the specific
topic, just e-mail me your address.
I do believe that a " photocopy " from the newspaper
can make a better impression. Otherwise ask Simon
for a " scanned copy "!
