When this Case was being discussed at GreatCrowd.com, the JWs there were asking the same question, and even mentioned 4 or 5 other towns across the US where JWs had been checking in with the police depts for years and years.

WELL, the answer to the question is that the WTS has been waiting for "just the right City and circumstance" to take this issue to the Courts.

First, when this whole thing started in Stratton, Stratton only had a population of 285 people. Not much of a tax base! In Stratton, the WTS thought that they found an opponent that they thought that they swamp-over.

Second, Stratton's Mayor stuck his foot in his mouth when he first stopped JWs in FS for not having a permit. I can't recall his exact words, but they were somewhat prejudicial against JWs, and the WTS provided the quote to the earlier Courts, and every newspaper that would use it.

There were likely other factors involved too. Past court decisions in Ohio state courts dealing with similar issues may have been favorable, etc., etc.

At any rate, "Goliath" was looking for a sickly, weak opponent to 'er "BUFFALO", but ended up fighting against a "David".

Comments like this indicate that you have absolutely NO CLUE regarding this case or issues as they relate to our modern time and juris prudence.

IF the USSC's decision is favorable to Stratton in any shape or form, the Cort will do so in a way that guarantees that your concerns DO NOT result.

I believe this should pretty much confirm that the article, The Edict of Nantes--A Charter for Tolerance? was also intentionally inserted into the November 22, 1998 AWAKE as food for United Nations consumption.

Paris, February 19 (1998){No.98-31} - On the occasion of a commemoration ceremony launching the official celebrations in France of the 400th anniversary of the Edict of Nantes, which gave religious freedom to French Protestants, UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor declared "the imperative of religious tolerance, prefiguring the recognition of human rights," formulated in this act of civil peace is "more relevant than ever."
The President of France, Jacques Chirac, also stressed "the relevance of this anniversary, first and foremost a message of fraternity and hope."

During the formal evening ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters yesterday held to commemorate the act through which Henri IV, King of France, put an end to the wars of religion in the realm, Mr Mayor pointed out that the Edict and UNESCO shared a fundamental mission to "institute, preserve and maintain peace founded on the intellectual and moral solidarity of humanity." But he added that "we are forced to admit that intolerance is gaining the upper hand." Therefore, he concluded: "The Edict of Nantes is more relevant than ever. May this fourth centennial unite us in the repeated expression of the wish to base our action, regardless of all our differences, on our common humanity."

In his address President Chirac paid tribute to Henri IV, "a man open to conciliation," for his action in favour of freedom of religion in a country ravaged by civil war. He recalled the historic background to the Edict and its consequences, before drawing "several essential lessons" for our times regarding "unity"; "authority of the state"; "good governance;" "tolerance accompanied by vigilance." He also said: "The 1598 Edict was a first step on the road to respect for other people and concern for their freedom and dignity. Our attachment to the Edict of Nantes [reflects] our belief in the values it evokes, first among them recognition of differences [...] The values and principles which allow [us] to live together must ever be re-stated and defended."

The organiser of the ceremony, Pasteur Jean Tartier, President of the Protestant Federation of France, said that "the obligation to remember does not consist in dwelling on the past but on moving on and bringing the past up to date." Monsignor Louis-Marie Billé, President of the French Conference of Bishops, noted that the Edict was "the beginning of respect for the freedom of religion, the basis of all freedoms." Pasteur Michel Bertrand, President of the Reformed Church of France, movingly recalled the three promises which "became reality but which we must keep alive: the interest of the community, the separation of church and state, and the social dimension of religion, in France and in the international community."

In the "old, large UN-NGO" thread in which I introduced the idea that "UN Affiliation" was part of the WTS's grand scheme to start insinuating itself into the good graces of worldly governments, I posted several links which showed the WTS participating in various HR conferences sponsored by governments and NGOs.

During the search for such links, I repeatedly found links showing the WTS sending out its representatives to Holocaust-theme meetings and conferences until it finally dawned on me that the WTS was using such to accomplish the same purpose- insinuating itself into the good graces of worldly governments and NGOs. I then posted a number of links proving, IMO, what some of you pooh-poohed as being too much of a stretch.

WELL, I invite the "pooh-poohers" to take a look at page 13 of the November 22, 1998 AWAKE and see how the editors "clumsily" worked the "Holocaust issue" into this concluding article in the UN series.

The article, From Many Opinions to One Declaration: Human Rights For All, was published in the the Sudan Human Rights Association's quarterly newsletter, The Sudan Monitor.

Curiously, the article linked below appeared in the December 1998 issue. This is curious because the Sudan Human Rights Association is located behind the Capco Petrol Station in Kampala, Uganda.

Now, communications are admittedly fast in our day and age, even in Africa, BUT how did the NOVEMBER 22, 1998 AWAKE arrive there fast enough so that it could be "plagiarized" in this December newsletter?

MoeJoJoJo, thanks for taking the time and making the effort to post those quotes. After all, your "digging" initiated all this new investigation.

It's noted that in the 12/1/98 Watchtower from which you extracted the above quotes, that the next article was "Legally Protecting the Good News", which is a summary of the WTS's "human rights struggles" in various countries.

Then next month, this "series" is continued in the January 8, 1999 AWAKE, titled "OUR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM--Is It Threatened?"

The opening theme article, "Religious Intolerance Today" includes a "bolded" quote from the UN's UDHR.

The "theme series" ends on page 13 with a "box article" which again highlights the UDHR.

NOW, GOING BACK TO THE NOVEMBER 22, 1998 AWAKE.

This AWAKE was undeniably a "celebration of the '50th birthday' of the UN's UDHR, published purposefully for the UN's consumption". The UDHR's actual 50th birthday was official on December 10, 1998. Thus, it appears that this AWAKE was timed with intention, and likely was delivered to UN officials prior to other ongoing celebrations.

It would be nice to know whether the December 1, 1998 WATCHTOWER and/or the January 8, 1999 AWAKE were also submitted.

HAWKAW, I thought that NGO articles submitted to UNDPI were separately libraried at the UN. What ever became of the effort to go there and actually determine which articles/pubs were submitted by the WTS?

Isn't this something the Library would fax on request?

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN FRANCE TODAY

Lessons from the past are sometimes forgotten. When arguing in favor of the Edict of Nantes, Henry IV declared: "No more should distinction be made between Catholic and Huguenot." Jean-Marc Florand, senior law lecturer at the Paris-XII University, explains in the French newspaper Le Figaro that in France, since 1905, "the law places all religions, beliefs, and sects on an equal footing." Discrimination and prejudice should be things of the past.

Ironically, in 1998, the year marking the fourth centennial of the Edict of Nantes, its lesson—that freedom of religion and equal treatment should be guaranteed for all citizens—has apparently been forgotten. Jehovah's Witnesses, the third-largest Christian religious community in France, have practiced their religion there for almost one hundred years. Nevertheless, a French parliamentary report denied that Jehovah's Witnesses are a legitimate religion. As a consequence, some French authorities routinely discriminate against Jehovah's Witnesses when it comes to their liberties. For example, in child-custody disputes, French judges often question whether parents who are Jehovah's Witnesses should be allowed to retain the custody of their children. These questions are raised merely because of the parents' religious affiliation. Also, because they are Jehovah's Witnesses, some foster parents are increasingly at risk of losing the children that are in their care.

Recently, French authorities have been threatening to impose an arbitrary tax on the contributions that Jehovah's Witnesses make to their congregations. According to the nongovernmental organization Human Rights Without Frontiers, this is a "dangerous precedent" that violates resolutions passed by the European Court of Human Rights. Indeed, the European Union guarantees religious freedom. Jehovah's Witnesses have been repeatedly recognized by the European Court as a "known religion," making the action by some French authorities even more difficult to understand.
