Last night my dad tried to commit suicide

i'm still blown away by it.

when i went out the door this morning to take the kids to school (7:15 a.m.) i turned on my cell phone and there were two messages from his retirement home, both saying that he had fallen at about 4:30 a.m. and was being taken to the hospital.

i called the hospital and they told me that he said he had taken 18 xanax in an effort to kill himself.

Farkel is so right on this one. The loving congregation isn't interested in you unless you are donating buckets or have your house available for book studies and circuit overseers accom and keep up the charade 100%. My parents are having a really bad time lately and don't go to meetings. Mum has cancer and dad (81) is trying to look after her. Suffice to say: Farkel is right.

I just wanted to say how inspiring your dad is. So he had an affair at age 75? Did he knock off the old girls husband to have it - like David did? Geez. What a humourless lot elders are. I swear their main motivation is jealousy. Well done grand-dad is what I say. Your mom is off the planet - I saw the movie Iris recently. He has suffered a lot with your mom - so what if he indulges himself briefly? Who has he hurt? Does it make him a bad man?. No way.

Try not to worry too much. My husbands mother did the same thing abut 10 yrs ago. She thought she was a burden on Society. But having attempted it once, she is now content to be a burden on Society. Why shouldn't she be? She paid her taxes! It might be that this will help your dad to get his mind sorted. Can you get him on a computer??? We'll look after him!!!!

It's been a year.......

since i first posted here.

going thru all the phases of grief has been difficult, but worth it.

the shock and disbelief that everything i knew was a lie, that i no longer had all the answers, and then the anger of being deceived.

Happy anniversary!! I hope you celebrated your birthday sometime over the last 12 months. Happy birthday for that too. :-) I am sure that you don't hve to make a big deal of this stuff, but it's nice to know that you can please yourself to do what feels comfortable. Not what makes other people feel comfortable. There seems to be so many catching on now. It seems so bleedin' obvious to me, I don't understand how everyone doesn't see thru it. BUT once I used to think like that about the troof. :-( Hope all works out great for you.

Scriptural rebuttal to disfellowshiping

i was thinking that since most of you have experianced shunning due to disfelowshiping or disassociation, that you might have some ideas adn scriptures to show how df and da shunning is unscriptural.

the elders were gracious enough to provide my wife with a packet to show how df'ng is scriptural and gag loving.. sean.

Lady Marianne, You and I think much a like. I wonder if we are similar ages? Though I only spent 10 yrs inside the Org. Because my mother is seriously ill I was associating with my sister recently. These rare moments give me insight into what type of woman my sister is. (been kept from knowing her for over 20 yrs). We were discussing films and I commented that "Dirty Rotten Scoundrals" and "Bird Cage" were my all time favorite movies. My sister was very enthusiastic about Dirty Rotten Scoundrals, but said she could not enjoy a movie that featured homosexuality (Bird Cage). So, lemme get this right? Theft and blatant fraud are ok for a jw but homosexuality isn't? Gimme a break! The homosexuality in Bird Cage was wonderfully portrayed. What delightful characters they all were. Honestly - if my sister is going to be that narrow minded I don't think she should watch any movies. They all feature sinful worldly people and what association does light have with darkeness. Bla bla bla? I am not gay and have a small amount of residual homophobia from growing up in a hetrosexual environment, but recently my sister in law has 'come out' and I would not consider treating her any different to the way I have always treated her. I could'nt think of anything more inhuman. I have no doubt that your brother is a wonderful person. That is what is important. There are a lot of 'straight' assholes in the world and probably some gay ones as well, but what really matters is how kind and thoughtful you are as an individual. I hope your situation isn't too unpleasant (shunning etc). I do know what it's like. I've lived with it a long, long time. It's truly barbaric. I am not a believer - but I think of those words "Father forgive them, they know not what they do".

Great post. I hope we hear lotsa rational thought and scripture on this one. I've been disfed for over 20 yrs for apostasy. All my family are jws - so you can imagine how much fun it's been!!! Having scriptures would be somewhat pointless for me because THEY DON'T TALK TO ME - AND ESPECIALLY IF I WANT TO DISCUSS THEIR CRACK POT BELIEFS. But I like to improve my mind (unlike them) and would like to see the counter arguments for what I basically feel is a most unkind, ungodly passtime.

i really have found this website helpful and would like to thank all involved.

Thanx for alerting me to the program. I'm outside OZ at moment so will have to add it to the list of things I want my kids to record.

Feeling depressed

its weird...i was feeling fine all day and then all of a sudden i just feel depressed.. i'm wondering if i made a mistake divorcing my wife.

i know i made a right decision leaving the wt, but just wonder if i should have stuck it out with her.

not that she wanted me or anything, thats the main reason why i left.

No wonder you are depressed! You've been drinking too much. Your Vit B is probably way down. For a quick pick me up
get some Vit B into yourself asap. Also, I presume you are still young? Join a gym!!! Get exercising. It's the best cure I know
for depression. Beats medication hands down. Building your body will give you something to do at nite and give you self esteem
too and get you out meeting people. C'mon, start planning for the good times that await you. REMEMBER, THE BEST FORM
OF REVENGE IS TO LIVE WELL. This might be off base, but it's not necessarily over between you and your ex wife. Let her see how well you are doing without her - it might make her re-think things - perhaps even the crack-pot religion she's chosen over you. Geez.......... Whoops, don't go there.......

My poor mother...HELP!

i just got off the phone with my mom and ...even though i had trouble with my "native" language...i still got the message to her.

jehovahs witnesses are bad!

(sounds more dramatic in my language) we spent about 40 mins talking on the phone back and forth in the "disfellowshiping" rule.

I'm disfellowshipped. I have been for 20 yrs. They called me apostate as I stopped believing in God and JWs. My parents were hounded for years not to see me. They've had a terrible time of it - because they refused to shun one of their children.

I am sooooooooo sorry for you. It sounds like your mother is too far gone to respond to anything you write. All you can do is tell your mother how much you love her and hope that what you have between you is strong enough to endure. In many cases it's not. Religious addiction is a terrible thing. It's completely irrational and nonsensicle. I've lived this nightmare all these years and I'm sorry to say there isn't much you can do about it.

If your mother is an intelligent person beg her to do one last thing for you before she allows herself to be enveloped in JW mind control. Ask her to read Crisis of Conscience. If she's not very smart she probably wouldn't get it, but if she has a vaguely inquiring mind it might just do the trick.

I "woke up" in 1979! Yet I have had difficulty believing the stuff about sexual abuse in the Org. - until very recently. Actually I have a book written by a Witness (here in Australia) which I read a couple of years ago before this problem came to light on the net. She wrote about her sexual abuse by her father, an elder. I read the book (written around 1990) and skipped the stuff about her abuse - well i skimmed over it, because i couldn't quite get it thru my head that it could happen in the Org. The rest of the book was very amusing - about her childhood in a large Witness family - and that's what I could identify with.

My point is that it's sometimes really difficult to get ones mind around certain situations that are foreign to everything you've ever understood. The dubs have taken so much from me and I hate EVERYTHING they stand for. I don't have one nice thing to say about them, but I couldn't quite grip the idea that sexual abuse was happening in the Org. When I finally stopped ignoring the posts about it and started to take it in, I could totally understand the part the elders have played in turning it into an even bigger problem. How very them. Egotisical and ignorant to the last.

I hope my comment helps you to see how difficult this would be for someone who thinks their religion is inspired of God. The rest of what your dad says is the usual chanting in the face of adversity.

Great talk at the KH today

i went to a kh near me today, they had a guy from london bethel talking.

he had some interesting things to say.. he did the talk in two parts, in the first half hour he was comparing 'this system of things with the titanic, and saying a lot about how the people on the titanic were carrying on normaly when the ship hit the berg.

then he went on about people had to 1, believe that the ship would sink and 2, have faith that the lifeboats would save them.

Mustang, where do you live? I am ashamed that I've never learnt Cantonese (or should I say I'm in my 16th year of learning first year Cantonese - iyah!). I was only ever going to be in Hong Kong for 2 yrs. I'm not there now but will go there this week to join my husband who works there. He has had several attempts to learn Cantonese. But it's too difficult because even if you remember the words you are bound to get the tone wrong and come out with something thoroughly insulting.

I am very fond of the Chinese people and I can't bear to think of the Society making inroads there. They seem way too smart to get caught up with WT mumbo jumbo. I just don't see the Chinese people buying that kind of crap. They aren't as anal as the Japanese and also I don't see them being so easily manipulated. God I hope I'm right.

I maybe should write to the Chinese Government in Beijing and warn them. Look how they've clamped down on the Fallan Gong (sorry I'm no speller). The WT is more or less the same deal only a thousand times worse. I should tell them that it's being boasted o/s that the WTS is making a back door entry. I could offer myself as an advisor.
