The anti-social networking thing is nothing new. My old hall and several others had an unofficial ban on MySpace back when it was popular. Anytime you bring the internet, worldly people, pictures, music, videos and personality together in one place that tends to be counterproductive for their isolationist stance. I had a MySpace account and loved it, mostly because only the “cool” witnesses were on there and it had tighter security settings than Facebook. Anyway one of the “cool” kids was a married 20 something pioneer I knew from another congregation, she and her husband were on there all the time posting pictures and music and all that jazz. Anyway, one day her account was suddenly shut down. It seemed weird. I texted her husband and asked why and he told me it was BS but to ask the wife for the story, so I did. Turns out her CO had created a fake account under a false name and then prior to the visit and then checked up on every “young person”. So his visit comes along and he pulls her aside and told her if she wanted to continue being a Pioneer the Myspace had to go, apparently and this is a direct quote “the CO was very concerned with pedophiles on the internet”. We stopped talking when I asked her to define the term pedophile and how that in anyway was a threat to a married adult woman.

The point here is that WTBTS wants to control how you use the internet. 16 years ago they printed an article (quoted above) that basically said the internet had the most vile things about humanity just seeping out. They made it sound like if you were on the internet then naked children would fall out of your computer screen all on their own. In 2009 when most people had a pretty good idea of what the internet was and how to use it they tried saying it was a portal for the devil. Now in 2012 they have not only completely failed in keeping followers away from the internet but they have also moved the majority of their propaganda distribution online. Never before in history have I been MORE sure that pure evil is in fact on the net and invading my home.

So along comes Facebook, 800 million users, 24/7 assess at home work and on the go. How long do you suppose before study articles are made available via Facebook? How long before you can “share a link” on the wall of someone who has just lost a loved one, follow the link learn about the imaginary new system… I would guess this is closer than any of us think. Weeks, months certainly inside of a couple years. But first… they must train people to use their Facebook accounts the way the WTBTS wants them too, more control and more influence into every single aspect of your life.

soooo since the article in 2009 when they said the internet was a portal for the devil... it has now became "a useful way to provide communication, education, and entertainment."

what does genesis 9:4 truly mean, in your opinion?.

some say it means do not eat blood.. .

To answer the question asked, Gen 9:4 I think is meant to avoid the following situation:

A salesman is lost in a rural area and stops at a farm to get directions. As he is talking to the farmer he notices a pig with a wooden leg. "How did the pig get a wooden leg?", he asks the farmer.

"Well", says the farmer, "that is a very special pig. One night not too long ago we had a fire start in the barn.

"Well, sir, that pig set up a great squealing that woke everyone, and by the time we got there he had herded all the other animals out of the barn and saved everyone of them."

"And that was when he hurt his leg?" asked the salesman.

"Oh no" says the farmer. "He was fine after that. Though a while later I was in the woods out back and a bear attacked me. Well, sir, that pig was near by and he came running and set on that bear and chased him off. Saved me for sure."

"So the bear injured his leg then," says the salesman.

"Oh no. He came away without a scratch from that. Though a few days later my tractor turned over in a ditch and I was knocked unconscious. Well, that pig dove into the ditch and pulled me out before I drowned."

"So he hurt his leg then?" asks the salesman.

"Oh no," says the farmer.

"So how did he get the wooden leg?" the salesman asks.

"Well", the farmer tells him, "When you have a pig like that, you don't want to eat him all at once."

What you must remember is that your average JW does not simply read the bible and then apply it to their lives in a logical fashion. Instead they read the bible as a supplement to Watchtower propaganda. Watchtower uses single verses from the bible to justify volumes of doctrine. For example based on Genesis 9:4 and a couple other short verses of the bible the WTBTS has: Outlawed lifesaving blood transfusions, called organ transplants cannibalism, outlawed modern blood fractions, outlawed some drugs who were distantly and in some cases not even directly made from blood or blood fractions, THEN after killing untold thousands by forcing people to refuse the treatments needed to save their lives and the lives of their children they then used the same scriptures to OK organ transplants, blood fractions, medicines made from blood fractions ect… The scriptures never changed but the publications people were using to “study the bible” did.

Your average JW does not know truly believe why they believe what they do all they know is what the WTBTS told them and they can recite basic talking points on the subject.

Sounds to me like he was creating a “Controlled Leak” while he knew there was nothing he could oppress you over at the time he knew that once a controlled leak of judicial information took place the rumor mill would do the rest. My guess is that you had a tag on the back of your head that read “Bad Association” and that was the elder body’s way of letting everyone know you were trouble.

Not that it was true by any means but hey… who would expect any type of truth in The Truth.

This reminds me of a time many years ago when a guy got arrested for DUI and couldn’t make bail. One of the elders actually mentioned him and his family by name during the announcements. He said he was in jail for DUI and that his wife/kids could use any support we could offer. His wife and kids were at the meeting, the announcement was obviously unexpected and she burst into tears and left pretty much instantly. My wife and I were friends with her and she was actually in our driveway when we got home. Apparently she had confided in this elder guy at her husband’s request, she didn’t ask him to keep it quiet but assumed the fact that she talked to him in the back room was obvious enough. My wife and I were able to help get him out of jail, he was a good guy and made a stupid mistake. Anyway, I tried throwing a fit on his and his wife’s behalf about the announcement but they didn’t seem to care stating that his arrest was public record anyway. The elder apologized for sideswiping her like that publicly but nothing ever came of it OTHER… than the husband getting DF’d because he told the elders to stick it when they tried pulling a JC on him over the issue. Turns out he had like 3 beers, was not drunk but got nailed anyway. Gotta love the laws.

Are JW's dfing those who buy holiday items now?

i don't bother too often these days with things jw.

the other day, in a chat with an old friend [also xjw] she stated that on a forum somewhere it was being ststated that jw's have ruled that those who would be found purchasing items that are considered 'holiday items' - turkey around thanksgiving, valentine candy, fireworks around the 4th [just a few examples] could face a jc.. any truth to this?

has the watchtower taken such a stance in writing?

It really depends on who you are, who you know and what the popular opinion locally is.

Here is an example.

In some “liberal” states or cities a brother/sister cannot own a hand gun and in some cases any gun AND have privileges in the hall. I have heard of extreme cases where JC’s have been formed when it is found out that a brother owns guns. There really is no written rule (last time I checked) that is for or against owning a firearm. Local opinion dictates. I happen to live in a conservative area and most of us happen to hunt. I myself have never hunted an animal but I do collect firearms. I have my own reason for doing this. A few years back a family moved to our area from somewhere in California, the congregation there had a moratorium on guns in general. Being the nice guy I am I invited him over for a meal with my family. He got the “grand tour” and that included my den where my guns are displayed in their locked cases. I have all kinds of them, from modern guns to antique muskets and the like I have hand guns and legal machine guns alike. This guy FLIPPED out, he accused me of living a double life and left shortly after. This happened on like a Friday night, Sunday meeting rolled around and as I had expected I got called into the back room. The elders were on my side but this guy just didn’t quit he took it to the CO, the CO wrote Brooklyn (maybe the elders wrote the letter but the CO wanted it, I can’t remember) Brooklyn basically said as long as I wasn’t going on people hunting expeditions that I could have my guns and still offer them free services such as mowing the kingdom hall lawn and running microphones however if my guns were at risk of stumbling members of the congregation then I would have to be dealt with. Long story short, that guy didn’t get invited over again.

I remember years past where MySpace was forbidden from the stage by name, it was never mentioned in articles by name but it was described with the WTBTS’s amazing methods at being just inaccurate enough to let someone have an excuse but still empowering people to be snoopy and judgmental. Gotta love it.

Anyway, at that time I had a myspace and as an adult with a myspace it really blew peoples minds. Then along comes faceboook, I log into facebook and HOLY COW the same elders who glared me down for MySpace had Facebook accounts, fragging morons.
