I echo the 401K advice. I work for the government so we have the Thrift Savings Plan which is somewhat like a 401k. It's a tax-deferred savings plan and they match up to the first 5% of your income that you put in. Nothing can beat an immediate 100% return. We only have a few investment options in the plan, but they are so broad that it would be very difficult to have a 50% loss. It also helps that this money is taken out before you even get paid. I hardly even miss it. I started my payroll deduction for the Plan as soon as I had been there long enough to get the matching and there would be no reason to stop it now. I also used to play around with some of the calculators on fool.com. Just plugging a few numbers into some of those calculators will demonstrate that what others posters have been saying about time is true.

Money and career tips for EX-JWs....
by logansrun init's a safe bet that if you were raised as a jw, or if you came into it early in life, you have some strange ideas about money and finances.
the wt for decades made even minimal post-secondary education utterly taboo and only recently has capitulated that "some" extra schooling might be neccessary (associate degrees good, bachelors degrees bad).
the average youth raised a jw has little understanding of investment due to the apocalyptic worldview of the organization (why invest in a dying system when the big "a" is right around the corner?).

Locking the doors durring the meetings
by Elsewhere inhave you ever attented meetings at a kh where they locked the doors once the meeting began?
i've attended a few in my life.. if you're late you have to knock on the door and be recognized through the peep-hole before they will unlock the door.. they usually joke that it's like noah's ark... once the doors close you're screwed.. .
yup... by their fruits you will know them.

No never myself, but my wife who is still a JW goes to a KH where they lock the doors during meetings. When I was attendant, we used to do a parking lot walk. Car theft was a concern.
I know some congregations in Memphis, TN where I grew up had high fences surrounding the whole property and the gates were locked when meetings were not going on. I suppose they had vandals come through at times, because no money is ever left at the KH, or at least it is not supposed to be left there. Maybe someone could come in after the sound equipment. My grandmother and cousins attended an inner city congregation in Memphis. They told me that one day some one walked into the hall, walked onto the stage sat down in a chair on the stage, and started absentmindely saying "Asaloma naka my brother" for everyone to hear. I don't know the correct spelling (or even the correct pronunciation), but if you're familiar with that Muslim greeting you know what I mean. He wasn't dangerous, but he did have to be removed. There are legitimate safety concerns at times.

would you hit a woman if she hit you first? (for men)
by pudd ini would like to as the men on the board a question.
if your wife/partner were to slap you during an argument, would you feel that if you were you to hit back it would make you equal?.
we all know that violance, no matter how minor is wrong, but this is a question about equality.

But when deciding whether to hit anyone back - no matter how justified or unjustified the first person was in hitting in the first place - depends upon whether you prefer to choose the high road - a peaceful solution such as Puternut suggested - or the low road - and ride it all the way down with the one who hit first.
I think Puternut's method is a valid choice, but it could also be seen as rewarding anti-social behavior. If a woman is so immature as to use violence on a man--admittedly violence that may little chance of causing any lasting physical harm--to get attention and is successful in getting attention that way, why would she not use that same method in future. Perhaps some men like that method of communication. The other choice that has been stated by others is to simply walk away from the relationship if there is one. There's no need to be need to be with a woman who hits to get attention or because she is upset by words unless you like that sort of thing. It is an equally high road.

Like most people it depends. No unless she could hit with enough force to actually physically hurt me, and she intended to continue to hit me. In general women are weaker than men if I don't want a woman to hurt me, I don't have to hit back to keep her from hurting me even if she is mad and has her arms swinging away. That is said in a general way. There are the exceptions who are much stronger than average. I suppose that's part of the reason for the unequal treatment under the law. Women can get away with throwing drinks and slapping men although technically that's assault.

It's been a while since I said a prayer that I actually thought was making its way telepathically to some supernatural spirit being, at least two years. After I stopped believing, that I did say a few fake ones to keep up appearances including a few at the bookstudy and at least one from the platform at the KH.

Is it harder for ladies to apologize?
by onintwo inyesterday i had a little spat with my wife.
it's all cleared up today.
she's a wonderful gal and we love each other very much.. but one thing kinda bugs me.

I've found that people who apologize for everything tend to bother me more. Some people will apologize for everything that doesn't please the person they are with whether they are responsible for it or not.
Person 1: Oh look, it's raining today. I prefer sunshine.
Apologizer: Oh I'm sorry about that. I should have picked a sunny day.
I try not to let things bother me, but constant apologies for things out of your control would irk me more than no apology at all for a real wrong. And someone mentioned that some people will do something bad, apologize and then repeat the cycle on the same mistake many times over. That's another situation in which the apology is worthless to me. If someone is really doing something that causes me harm, I don't need an apology, I just need them to stop it. If I point out to a person that they are hurting me with some action, all I need is a stop action. I don't need an apology or any other verbal response.

I'm not sure I'd call him the King, but I do like some of his music. I especially like Jailhouse Rock. I grew up in and around Memphis. Every year on his birthday and his death day, a large number of his worshippers make a pilgrimage to Memphis and Graceland. He's brings lots of dollars to Memphis as a dead man.

Why do they put Braille on the drive-through bank machines?
I know this is a joke thread, but SERIOUSLY, why do they do this?I'll take a guess at this. Perhaps a blind person is sitting in the backseat of the car on the driver's side and is driven up to the bank machine. Also, I've been in places where no walk-up bank machine was available after the bank closed, so I simply walked up to the drive-through machine. Perhaps any blind person living in the area would have to do the same thing.

I can't pick just one either. I guess I watch too much tv.
I love the Simpsons and Southpark also. Not just mindless cartoons.
King of the Hill. The stereotypical Texan?? Do you Texans identify with Hank Hill or any of his buddies. Funny guys.
From Texas to New York. Seinfeld. Seinfeld was once mentioned by Boomhower (sp?) on King of the Hill. He thought those NYC guys were pretty funny.
And for really mindless entertainment, any of those super dorky Sci-Fi's that come on the Sci-Fi channel on Saturday or Sunday morning.

Although my parents raised me in the JW religion, I still respect them and view them with honor. I don't think they had ill will and were only doing what they thought and still think is best. I think there is a lot that is positive about me and all that is positive about me has to be credited to my parents. Those positive influences went above and beyond providing more than adequate food, shelter and clothing for the first 20 or so years of my life.
