update on the forum
by Aussie Oz inexciting times.... son moved out of his jw home this week amid uproar from mother because he has follwed my advice about moving out and starting a new job.
visited him tonight in his new digs and he said: "don't know if i am going to stay in the truth"...!.
my advice was if that is what he wants to do then perhaps now is the time to not go to the new local hall and do a fade.... daughter read animal farm for school and commented: "i can see a few similarities to the jws in that story".... my response was well, wait till you read 1984 darling!

Wow, this is really incredible! Oddly enough, for some reason, I'd heard of Faith's Foundations, though I can't think where. Could be from an old elder here.
I have a copy of a copy of a copy of a photo from that visit.
Black Sheep, that looks really interesting.
Thanks again so much, all of you.

Do demons really exist?
by Inisc ini mean, is there really any scientific evidence to support their existence?.
is it used as a scare tactic of thewts?.
and i suppose if one doesn't believe in god, a belief in satan and demons and angels for that matter would be contradictory... im not sure what i believe now but would love to hear everyone's thoughts..

Best answer I can give is...who knows?
They might. They might not. Same as God. Who really knows?
So, nearly as they used to say in the intro to Hong Kong Phooey....
Are they figments of the imagination?....Are they real?....
Could be......!!!!!

Great fun about new magazine simplyfying
by Gorbatchov inyesterday i read about the new watchtower & awake magazine simplyfying (15 pages) on jwd and i got a very big big simle at my face.
(yes, the face is big also...).
because: the simplyfying is based on a new strategy: using internet (jw.org) for distributing the magazine content.. the big smile came from this: at a recent co visit, the co told the congretation the following: "everyone of us who suggests that our magazines and litterature has to be distributed by internet is a potential apostate and against the will of jehovah.

Of course it could be as well that I've been heavily love-bombed in the last 24 hours, in the JW special unique heavy-pressure, memorial's-coming-up kind of way.

States of hypnosis - getting people to face facts
by Qcmbr inwas looking at hypnosis ( always wondered why it works so well on some people - not because i want to convince everyone i meet to be my slaves - honestly ;) ) and i read something that stopped me in my tracks.
the articles author stated that most of the time we are in a state of hypnosis which is no more than our automated systems taking over from our conscious ones for example, when we drive home and realise we didn't think too hard about driving we just 'arrive home' we are in a mild hypnotic state; when we get immersed in a movie and lose our sense of where we are we are in a suggestible world where we potentially get moved by what we see etc.
all these are indicators of our conscious self focusing in such a way that our actual behaviours are handed over to our sub-conscious brain which is also our long term learning process.

I took 2 years+ of solid research to come to the conclusion my faith was a sham but I presented this information to my wife and she didnt reject me because it was also at the same time we were both fuming at a seperate situation where the church had really failed so we were both agitated and she was defending me from local church leaders. Since her conscious self was in 'defend hubby' mode and shocked by church leadership behaviour I was able to present my information in a matter of a few hours and get most of it direct to her sub conscious without an extended period of rejection/ fear and defense of her beliefs. Now she's almost out.
Qcmbr, that's almost an exact description of how I came to get taken in by the WT.
Uncanny.
I have a feeling I am not particularly hypnotizable, but I still fell for the JW bullshit. Go figure.
Breakfast of champions, that also counts for me too. Weird.

Thank you so much, all of you!
You've given me much more than I could possibly have imagined, in wonderful detail, and with prospects for futher research. Special thanks to Mickey Mouse and Rob Crompton, but actually to all of you because among those little snippets of information are gems with ideas attached to them.
Rob, I've spent a while on your blog. I am going to PM you, and also Mickey and maybe some others too. It may not be until tomorrow, as life has become very busy today...I'll maybe post a bit about that elsewhere later on.
Loz, do you remember any stories that couple told. BTW, Loz, I'm very conscious that I owe you a PM and it will come. Someitmes life takes over, and although it's easy to dip into the forum, more considered writing just doesn't always happen to order.
George, sounds as if you were a small boy at Wembley then. Any partular memories that stand out?
You may be wondering why I asked this. Well, I have just a little germ of an idea, but it's only a germ, very small, and the way my brain works is weird. The subconscious does a lot of the work but the conscious mind deals with facts and then the two work together, and it's all unplanned.
I'll let you know.
One of the best things that's happened to me since I determinedly walked away ffrom the Borg is that my creativity has begun to return, along with a growing sense of freedom. My experience of the Borg is that all creativity was stifled, almost completely.
Very busy today, not sure if I'll get back on here or not.
Thanks again everyone! I love this forum!

What an interesting thread!
Talesin, I thought yours was to do with the Talyllyn railway in Wales!
Hotspur, I too enjoyed that comic, even though it was meant for boys.
JRK, I admire your courage in giving your initials!
As for me, well, Chariklo was one of the centaurs in Greek mythology, married to Chiron, and also, confusingly, a nymph or naiad, wise and renowned for her grace. Astronomically, one of the trans-Neptunian-objects is named after her; many of them are given names from world mythology.
I like everything to do with space and astronomy, and the same for mythology, and as for being renowned for wisdom and grace, well, the perfect name!

When did things really take off for the WT in the UK? Can anyone help with some research ideas?
The Proclaimers book gives some ideas, but I'm wondering how quickly it grew. Were there areas where it became more accepted than others?
I'm thinking of everything, from what must be the early years right through to the sixties or so. How was it received before the First World War? During it, with the concientious objectors?
I remember seeing JW's handing out leaflets of some sort in London in the early fifties when I was growing up. Some sisters here have told me how their mother used to kit them out with placards round the neck at a young age.
I'm just wondering whhere the sources might be.
