Shark Evolution
by metatron inhttp://descrier.co.uk/science/fossil-discovery-shows-model-evolution-sharks/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fossil-discovery-shows-model-evolution-sharks.
i used to consider sharks to be evidence for creation - and against evolution because it was stated that they are largely unchanged after millions of years ( hence, 'what evolution?')..
that's not the case, however.

Jehovah's Witnesses Have No Problem With Lying!
by minimus inwitnesses brag that they are the most honest people in the world!.
but, they teach their followers that it's ok to lie if someone is not "entitled" to know the truth.. .

Apparantly....
JW's don't want to convert you...
They don't discourage higher education...
They don't judge people...
They don't claim to be the only right religion...
They don't claim that only they will survive armageddon...
They are not asked for money....
They don't shun their family or loved ones....
They don't take the bible literally.....
They are not creationists....
They do teach people in local communities how to read....
They don't have stocks and shares or lawyers or gag orders
They don't protect paedophiles or move them around or withold evidence from police....
But having been a JW for 25 years, I know the 'truth' to these claims....

Want to know why people accept evolution ?
by snare&racket indo you have questions about or want to understand evolution?
it is a difficult concept to communicate and so if it is not explained well , it is understandable that we would dismiss it.. i sincerely want to talk with people who want to learn more or see what all the fuss is about.
we are all learning and increasing our knowledge all the time and it is good to go over facts with critical eye.. evolution we can discuss, looking at the foundational facts and evidence, one at a time for you to go and check, agree or disagree with and return.. no pressure to accept it, you can decide for yourself, also no mocking etc of what you have to say.. .

There seems to be an assumption that evolution has a goal and its........a human. Our ego knows no bounds. They don't realise that a frog is as evolved as we are. The motivation is the enviroment nothing more. There is also NO BLUEPRINT for a species or animal. There is no gold standard human or perfect shark, it is just constant change influenced by the enviroment, hence the term NATURAL selection.
Someone was posting here in the last 12 months claiming that white people are more evolved than african tribal people.
Ignorance can be bliss, but it can also be dangerous.
I remember reading Plato and the concept of isms, so a table is a representation of tableism. There is an ideological and gold standard 'table' concept and from that we can imagine, construct and compare the idea of a table. This concrete thinking is common to the human mind and it inteferes with our understanding of evolution. We look at a shark in 2014 and say THAT is a shark, as if there was a sharkism concept to measure from....but there isn't.
Sharks have changedvover millions of years, so much so the earlier ancestors would be unrecognisable as a 2014 shark, proving the concept of 'isms' incorrect, despite humans looking at the world with that mindset.
I am rubbish at philosophy and may have explained it poorly, sorry if that was the case xxx

I really didn't want to go down this route, because this isn't a lecture, it is a chat.... but people are talking about these 'drugs' without realising it is a chemical reaction seen in many common medicines and interactions already.
People are imagining sitting in a room injecting or smoking this 'drug' with a dodgy, dangerous atmosphere painted and implications of runining your brain. BUT.. this is ignorany of the chemistry, we also already use sister molecules with psych issues, depression, ADHD, parkinsons, mood disorders, anxiety disorders. All these chemicals alter the seretonin (5HT) levels, they just do it different ways.
People keep giving anecdotal opinion about drug abuse, totally missing the point.
I am honestly interested in the visual and auditory hallucinations experienced, I think it can teach us much about such pathology as schizophrenia, something we know VERY, VERY little about.
Then there is the potential with such REM sleep disorders such as narcolepsy. Then there is the uses of a psychadelic as an anaesthetic experience, end of life management, palliatuive care.... NOT that there is currently any resear h in these areas..... which is my exact point.
Now back to the people who have experienced it.....
How long did it last? What did you see hear? Did you experience things outside of your own historical experiences or imagination? Could you still see, hear and interact with the world around you? Did you consciously realise it was a false experience?

Space Madness, go argue on your own, you are just being confrontational. This is not a debate its a chat. Nobody is promoting it as a treatment and there is science and research into its role in sleep and medicine whether you knew it or not.
" After a pause of nearly 40 years in research into the effects of psychedelic drugs, recent advances in our understanding of the neurobiology of psychedelics, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin and ketamine have led to renewed interest in the clinical potential of psychedelics in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders. Recent behavioural and neuroimaging data show that psychedelics modulate neural circuits that have been implicated in mood and affective disorders, and can reduce the clinical symptoms of these disorders. These findings raise the possibility that research into psychedelics might identify novel therapeutic mechanisms and approaches that are based on glutamate-driven neuroplasticity."
Nature Reviews Neuroscience 11 , 642-651 (September 2010) | doi :10.1038/nrn2884
Sleep.... we know seretonin is involved, we know DMT alters seretonin levels, there is research showing its interaction with REM sleep. Whether we are metabolising DMT to increase 5HT in REM sleep is EXACTLY what I want to know.
"Results show that daytime serotonergic psychedelic drug administration leads to measurable changes in PSG and sleep power spectrum and suggest an interaction between these drugs and brain circuits modulating REM and SWS."
Psychopharmacology February 2008, Volume 196, Issue 2, pp 315-326
WILLOW: There are studies on psychadelics indicating their medical use in addictions, anxiety and depression. Interesting stuff. Stigma and ignorance is holding back research, it would be interesting to see the potential for such chemicals. I am sure in the future, at the very least there will be more research. But I do think it should become more scientific and less anecdotal, just because its the best method of assessment. It is important to say willow that even though there is research confirming the relation to mood states, we just don't know enough yet.
"The present study investigated the effects of ayahuasca in anxiety, hopelessness and panic-like measures through a double-blind protocol in Santo Daime members. Acute ingestions of the brew significantly attenuated hopelessness and panic-like parameters as detected by BHS and ASI-R psychometric scales, respectively.
Taking into account this indirect agonist action of ayahusca at the monaminergic system, including the noradrenergic but preferentially the serotonergic system, we might speculate that the reduction of BHS and ASI-R psychometric parameters observed in the present study were mediated at least in part by this mechanism. This suggestion is supported by the fact that the majority of antidepressant/antipanic drugs also enhance noradrenergic and serotonergic functions, either inhibiting noradrenalin and serotonin reuptake, such as the tricycle antidepressants, or selectively inhibiting serotonin reuptake, such as the widely used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors."
Journal of Ethnopharmacology Volume 112, Issue 3, 25 July 2007, Pages 507–513.
Anyone with psych issues may come to harm, as with many drugs including psychadelics. Anecdotal evidence and ayahuasca/ dmt experiences are becoming more common and recreational, hence why we need more real research so that the only source is not the internet and word of mouth. Obviously, taking psychadelic drugs is unadvisable medically, but in the REAL WORLD people do take it and I am interested in what people have experienced. Documentaries on NETFLIX and well known interviews mentioned here are being discussed and listened to. Stigma and ignorance may force research into the hands of the unqualified and that is dangerous.

New "Donation Arrangement" is a DECOY!
by The Searcher input yourself in the org's position - distasteful as that is - and come up with a solution to solve the problems of not only recovering their stock market losses, but also, ensuring an increase in their dwindling revenue stream.. the major problem is, donations are voluntary (with no future guarantees) whereas pledges are compulsory - in the heart and mind of the giver!.
however, far too many will probably forget/refuse to keep up their monthly tax - with no way of knowing who is 'paying the man', and who is not.
master stroke - make plan a 100% certainty to fail in the first year, based on the 'anonymity' of the setup.

Space madness, you will just have to wonder &/or disagree. But please do it quietly.
Tik Frankie and Nancy, do you have any experience and what was it like? Was it a dream like state but with more awareness, was it similair to other drug experiences? I would never consume a source of DMT illegally or outside of a designed study etc to be honest, too chicken and I have done enough pharmacology in the lab to know moles matter! Titrate baby!
I am REALLY interested in the neurolgical mechanisms it stimulates, I would love to do a study using functional MRI during an experience and see if I could associate it with memory/input collation during sleep. There has only been a handful of studies as of yet, would be fascinating to explore the biology involved. The fact organisms (including humans) can metabolise and activate DMT channels indicates it has or has had an evolutionary role in nature.
Interesting stuff.
