What is spirit, exactly?
by Viviane ini've always wondered that.
recently i asked that question on another thread and didn't really get ananswer.
cofty made an excellent point that we often hear what it isn't, but that really isn't useful.. so, what is it?

How do you study? What are your methods of memorizing big amount of text?
by will-be-apostate ini'm having an exam in mineralogy in 20 days and need to learn 120+ pages of content.
i've learned a part of it so far.
i'm just curious how did you/do you study?

Alchemy?
Kate, forgive me....can you remind me again what course/degree you did, which uni? I am sincerely not being rude, just don't remember.
Alchemy is very.....odd...to study as a module. Sure Newton would love a chin wag with you.
I hated learning organic chemistry....all the curly arrows drove me insane!
Chemistry is very similair to math functions and physics equations. All such topics are like sports, practice and exercise is the key, Practicing over and over.

Everyone learns differently, but my approach was...
Time: make a schedule of how many study hours you now have between now and the exam. Have a rough idea of how much you can do in an hour, be very conservative in the estimate.
Prioritise: Narrow down what you actually need to learn, what is more important to learn and what you find hard learning. Focus on the areas you know you are bad at.
Read it all three times: Reading the data three times, with some space between each reading lays a good foundation.
Use your natural memory making abilities: When reading be VERY aware of making mental links between facts. If mineral 'x' is pink and is formed from fossilised dinosaur bones. Everytime you read of minersl 'x' imagine a pink dinosaur with a huge 'x' on it. It is very hard to undo this kind of word association so don't be sloppy and make a mistake. Also force yourself to think of the image everytime you see the minerals name.
When I am learning I try to engage all the senses and make as many neural connections as possible. I imagine it all forwards, backwards, sideways, I imagine visualising it, smelling it. I play with the words and names ALOT for memory purposes and make mneumonics as Cofty said.
Eventually you find that you know things without realising it, because you learned it so well first time around, 4 years later when asked or when needed, the memory simply comes forward......often
Test Yourself: go online, ask your tutor, by some test books. This is what revision is supposed to be, not learning. With time you will manage your workload so that you learn all year and revise before exams. But in the early days this is often not realised. Revising, i.e. testing your lesrning is vital before an exam. It tells you what you don't know and what you know well. Prioritise some final learning based on this testing. This last step is often skipped by people who fear testing themselves. People that do well..... never miss this step. Overcome feeling crap about finding out what you don't know. Every extra mark counts, finding out what you dont know before an exam is the keyM Not what you already know.
Trust that it works, you will be amazed how much you can consume. I will admit all doctors have forgotten an awful lot, because they are human, but it is astounding what you can learn and remember. There is no limit really. The only issue is not using the information for so long that you forget it.
It is a lie that person 'x' is cleverer than person 'y'. Studies show that children are all very similair in ability at an early age. Over time we fall into categorisation and fall for the false perception of 'I'm not very academic' or 'I can't do maths'. It is true some peoples genetics will make them somewhat better at some things, but, by far the biggest deciding factor in how you do is.....EFFORT. That is the ultimate truth in academia. If someone beats you in an exam, they worked harder or more efficiently.
Learning anything is simply effort .....be it a fact about minerals or a fact about football stats or about heart attacks. It is JUST information and the effort to learn it.
So if you want to smash the exam, smash the revision. There is no shortcut.
snare x
Oh and academia 101, never trust another student. They will tell you they found it hard, couldn't revise and did no work.....then get 98% for something that took 4 weeks of slaving over for you to get 75%. Don't be fooled.... they slogged. It is still as yet impossible to download information to your brain without effort! It is however, easy to lie. It is a common thing, so ignore it x They want to give the impression they can know things without learning it, it speaks of their immaturity, ego and pride. Maybe it is more of a competitive medic issue, but look out for it.

It is so obviously a lie......now
by snare&racket inonce the spell is broken, one you take a deep fresh breath outisde of the watchtower camp, the amazingly obvious realisation becomes clear.... of course this is a lie, of course this is ridiculous!
you find you have memories of really believing the claims and promises, but it seems like another life, another experience.
it seems so incredibly false once you leave and it is very difficult to belive you even once accepted it!

Everybody wants to be the person with the *special* information..... conspiracy theories tickle the ego, "I know something you don't know! something BIG!"
Hence we were eager to believe a unique message that made us 'special'. In reality the special message changes wildly over time, which puts perspective on the message we were given.
The 'truths' I was told in the 80's are now 'old light', or to the un-brainwashed...no longer the 'truth'. So that special feeling of having special knowledge, was nothing more than .........a feeling. The actual knowledge, is now considered valueless and incorrect. Man, they even edit it all out the old literature or have them glue edited paragraphs over the older ones.
New light! what a simple, unscriptural and yet effective lie! As if god would lie or decieve or allow mistakes to prevail at all! That would negate the right to punish people that left who recognised the numerous errors and wrong information. The idea of coming out of a cave and not being blinded by light works as a story,, but not in respect to what it is supposed to represent i.e. god providing information. Of course he could provide correct information all at once! He supposedly did, the bible! To claim what 8 men think about who the king of the north is and his significance has developed over time as god believes is appropriate ....is just a shit excuse for being wrong numerous times! 8 men cant decide what 'generation' means and they blame god for keeping them in the dark ....until now lol...until they change its meaning AGAIN.
it is laughable and again I cant believe I fell for it! How ridiculous!
But it felt good to be TOLD we were getting special NEW information. The blood brochure in the 80's specifically says 'no blood fractions' but 20 years later when new light says 'god has lovingly allowed us freedom to choose blood fractions' is met with "wow" and people saying"look at us progress as s religion!". It all makes sense in that regard, they sold us a feeling and we bought into it. The WT appeals to our ego's and human wants, human needs. Without an ounce to show for anything they promise in 150 years.... it is amazing people fall for it. But they do. People even DIED for what is now..old light.
How shameful!
Just as JW's are willing to think that the billions of religious people, not JW's can be so convinced yet so wrong.... it says much about their self reflection and need to believe that they NEVER consider their own vulnerability to make the exact same error as the muslims, catholics, protestants, hindus, buddhists...

Don't You Think It's Odd That "Jehovah" Was Invented By A Catholic Monk?...
by minimus inand that jehovah's witnesses are proud to use that name?.

700 years after Jesus, the first earliest mistake was seen.
The Jews used to read the OT out, the sentence YHWH means "he causes to become".
The hebrew word for lord was adonai.
In the OT, these were the two main penned, references to god in the text. No name at all.
The Jews became mystical about refrences to god, so would not say any of the terms reffering to their god out loud, spexifically YHWH. So when reading the OT, in front of others they would say adonai or other terms instead instead.
So in early manuscripts it can be seen YHWH with the vowels for adonai below it, to remind the reader to say adonai, IF reading aloud.
Skip to 700ad, nearly a thousand years after jesus, and copyists assume that the old hebrew scrolls with YHWH and aoa written beneath it, maybe should me mixed together to make god's name. Like it was some sort of code.
So YHWH and adonai's vowels were mixed. It starts as YaHoWaH, over hundreds of years and the introduction of latin it became JaHoVaH (the YHWH simply replaced with latin alphabet JHVH).
So for a few hundred years the name was used in hymns, bibles etc. Then, in recent history, when they found all the old scrolls and realised what had happened with the copying and insertion of the mashed together YHWH and aoa written below it, the Catholics embarassingly removed the totally made up name JaHoVaH from all their bibles etc, replacing it back go adonai or YHWH.
So cut to the 1930's and an ignorant man in Brooklyn starts pondering who this 'JaHoVaH is in all the old bibles and hymns...' silly muppet jumped the gun and before you know it, they name the religion after a copying mistake.
The most embarassing thing is, they know what gney have done now. At the start of the greek interlinear it says, the name has been continued because it is a popular rendition.
What kind of reason is that AND why didn't I ever read or see any of this, all the while they had us telling people, only we use gods name!
What is worse, adonai and YHWH is obviously ancient Hebrew. The Watchtower society alone insist on exchanging all the greek terms for lord and god etc with Jehovah, for no reason at all. This is SO deceptive, it could not have been in the NT because it was a different language .....AND with thousands of years seperating the OT and NT. Of course as well as that, Jehovah is in NO old mansucripts of the NT and lastly.....as I explain above, it is not even a legitimate name.
snare x
p.s. It is a real eye opening thing to show a JW. "Do you know where the name Jehovah comes from?"
most Jw's are very proud, they will say yes, ask them to pen the tetragrammaton. Most will rememebr it as YHWH. Then ask them what it means. "He causes to become" or "He does as he wills" etc. Now ask what adonai means in hebrew? Remind them it is LORD. Now simply ask them to add the voewls from adonai to YHWH. Then say change the Y to a J and the W to a V for the latinisation.
It is a powerful thing to show them. Then explain it as the copying mistake it is, reinforced and used eventually by a catholic monk that bought into it 1500 years after Jesus died.

prologos, never has someone tyoed so much whilst understanding so little. It isn't an insult, it is a plea to halt doing it.
Such talk is how con men, cults, pseudo scientists talk. I would ignore it, had I not witnessed it be so dangerous.
Please stop it, that is all. You talk of well understood mechanisms as if they are a mystery to us. I am afraid that is a personal issue to you alone. A library card would ix your dilemma. Though I am aware, woo, pseudo-science and made up b.s. is easier to generate or consume than years of reading and reserach.
For anyone that takes his comment seriously, please examine them thoroughly. They make no sense whatsoever, what he writes has no correlation with his conculsion. If you don't understand the words he uses, be assured neither does he. I do understand them and he makes no sense at all. But do not take my word for it either, simply examine it yourself.

Thanks for all your comments.
This perspective explains so much, of course NOBODY wanted to talk to us, wanted our literature! Of course the growth is shamefully low, representing about half of the JW's kids staying and getting baptised and nothing more. What is on offer is utter madness!
So you have been working in the factory/shop/garage/farm all week. You sit down for lunch on sunday and put on a good film to relax...
Then....KNOCK KNOCK.....
You ignore it.....
KNOCK KNOCK....you get up and answer the door...
"Hello, we are just asking your neighbours and yourself whether you would like to live forever on a paradise earth?"
OMG......we were batshit crazy !!!!!
