what would be the most important things you think someone should be aware about jws if they are planning on getting baptised as a jw?

imagine you are on a plane and get talking to the person next to you.

you find out they are considering becoming a jw but they are not sure.

Being spiritual means learning about GOD and trying to conform your lives to His requirements. There are many faithful people in various religious organizations. If a person is happy as one of Jehovahs Witnesses then let them be happy. If not they can find another teaching that pleases them. Either way the intent of the heart is righteous so GOD will acknowlege their efforts. By their fruits you will recognize them....

There is a big difference between learning about God YOURSELF through personal examination and learning about what the Watchtower Society wants you to believe through study of articles written BY THEM, regarding THEIR interpretation of scripture, and using a bible that was translated to match their already entrenched belief system by a secret group. There is a difference between what God may require and what the Watchtower requires. There is a difference between religions and CULTS. The thread isn't about letting a Jehovah's Witness be happy. It is about what you would tell a person who is thinking about BECOMING a JW. By your logic if this person was thinking about joining Scientology or the Westboro Baptist Church.....a person should do nothing to discourage him/her. After all, the intent of the heart is what matters, no?

"Sure become one of Jehovahs Witnesses why not. They are a strict faith without a doubt and carry many rules. Have you ever met a faithful J.W.? They are well disciplined, loving, and kind. Jehovahs Witnesses make an effort to conform their lives to what the bible teaches whereas many other faiths don't even question whether or not a person is growing spiritually."

Yep. They carry so many rules that many of them are man made! Sorta like the pharisees. Remember how well the gospel accounts spoke of the pharisees? Faithful JWs are indeed well disciplined. Programed, if you will to obey implicitly and never, ever question the teachings and beliefs that are handed down to them under fear of disfellowshipping. They are indeed loving so long as the Watchtower allows them to be. If you are ever disfellowshipped, they will show how much they "love" you by treating you as though you are dead. I get goose bumps just thinking of it! And they certainly are kind. Instead of volunteering to make the world a better place, they hand out magazines that make false predictions. Starving children don't need food. They need false promises! And they certainly do conform their lives to WHAT THEIR LEADERS TELL THEM THE BIBLE TEACHES. But they wouldn't dare try to conform their lives to THEIR OWN UNDERSTANDING of the bible. Their leaders tell them that is not allowed. Yes indeed. They "grow" spiritually by staying attached to the teet of the organization.....drinking its milk and believing what they are told to believe, instead of doing their own research and study and coming to their own independent conclusions.

It's a spiritual paradise!

i could be wrong, but i can't help but be a bit optimistic.last night my parents and i had our "family worship night".

i hate it, and i believe my mother does too.

my dad only does it because he's an elder but last night even he was acting like he didnt want to do it.

And your dad's a frickin elder! Amazing how much of their history even the top dogs are blissfully unaware of.

Apostacy a one way street?

do you know anyone who has 'awakened' that went back to 'sleep'?.

i'm not talking about concious class, but someone who somehow got suckered back into the wts little game.. (i for one could never ever ever ever ever return - but interested if you've heard of people that have).

I know of people that got DF'd and then went on a lifestyle binge (parties, drugs etc)......and then came running back to the borg after 9-11. But those people never truly "woke up". They just got tired of the control and went haywire for a while. They never released themselves from the mental shackles that had been put on them years ago.

I don't believe that ANYONE that has ever truly woken up has or could ever go back

I would mention that they teach that the "brothers" went into "babylonish captivity" in 1914 due to their wrong beliefs and incorrect teachings. But then, in 1919, according to the articles, they were released from babylonish captivity having been spiritually cleansed. I would then ask......"have you ever looked at what was being taught in 1914 vs what was being taught in 1919? What changed? If they were in captivity for a few years but emerged in a cleansed state then there should be a difference like night vs day in their teachings during that span, no? Why don't you study the original publications to get an idea of what was being taught back then and whether or not would have accepted it as "truth"

People who pioneer on government assistance

i had a chat with my boyfriend about this, and he said that he knows quite a few pioneers who are capable of working but prefer to pioneer with government assistance.

his thought was, "well, it's kind of bad, but at least they're doing something useful/good with their time.

" i know from reading this board that it's a pretty widespread thing.

It sincerely pisses me off. So you have a person at your door that will.....if you progress long enough in your "bible study"......begin to teach you that the world's governments are all evil and deserving of destruction.......yet this same person will gladly accept free handouts from this same evil and corrupt government?

i bought a large container of strawberries.

my daughter is disfellowshipped.

may i consider it "necessary family business" to give her some of them to share with my grandchildren?

The society would advise that you give the strawberries directly do your grandchildren thus maintaining your strict stance of absolute shunning

Actually I remember our douche bag CO giving a talk once similar to this. He said "I have a beautiful example for you. I know of a brother whose father was disfellowshipped. Unfortunately, this dear brother's sibling was killed in a car wreck and of course the funeral was going to be planned and paid for by the parents. Well, our dear brother was helping out with the arrangements and he called to talk to his mother. His father picked up the phone. Our dear brother asked to speak with his mother. The father said "you know....I am still your dad. And even though I am disfellowshipped, you can still talk to me about necessary family business". Our dear brother said "Yes dad I know that. But I can also talk to mom about it. Please put her on the phone". Isn't that a wonderful example of upholding Jehovah's righteous requirements?"

So there. According to our CO.....even family emergencies do not qualify as an excuse to talk to disfellowshipped loved ones. And yes, he kept saying "our dear brother" over and over again.

Bible Teach Book has been getting a facelift WT Style

well the book they use to conduct bible studies is already showing its age, and just like the changes they made to the live forever book they are doing it to the bible teach book as well.

last week a friend of mine contacted me out of the blue asking if we could have lunch together.

my friend has been studing with the jw's on and off for about 11-12 years i think.

she has told me everytime i see her that she can't wait for jehovah to end this evil world...she can't wait for the new system...the end is so close....etc.. i sent her a message back telling her that i left the jw's and asked her if she had heard that.

way to to! ya know what is amazing? This - "She asked me why I said she should shun me...I then explained that I'm an apostate according to WT and she can't talk to me. She didn't even know what an apostate is."

Yet she still qualifies for baptism! you don't need to know our rules or understand our teachings.....you just need to take the plunge so we can control you!
