FYI
R.H Sack's comments in the magazine were taken from the book "Images of Nebuchadnezzar - The Emergence of a Legend" written by Ronald Herbert Sack.
I have not yet read it
out now.. yes, yes, yessssss!
on p. 26-27 they talk about how the lunar positions on vat 4956 fit 588/7 bce!!!.
"clearly, much of the astronomical data in vat 4956 fits the year 588 b.c.e.

"The WTS knows that all they have to do is perform a little sketchy amateur astronomy and the R&F will take their word over centuries of research and accumulated knowledge."
And sadly.....THAT is precisely why this religion will never die. When you have millions of people that are trained not to think for themselves....and those people breed and raise more people that are taught not to think for themselves. The cycle will just continue

Zoiks - you said "
Here is a very strange paragraph, attempting to establish the year of VAT 4956 as 588 rather than 568. Can you spot the very WT-esque sleight of hand?
The tablet mentions a lunar eclipse that
was calculated as occurring on the 15th day
of the third Babylonian month, Simanu. It
is a fact that a lunar eclipse occurred on
July 4 (Julian calendar) of this month during
568 B.C.E. However, there was also an eclipse
20 years earlier, on July 15, 588 B.C.E.
Is the sleight of hand you are referring to in regard to the fact that the 3rd Babylonian month (Simanu) matches up with May/June of the Julian Calendar.....not July? Therefore a lunar eclipse that occurred on July 15, 588BCE would be irrelevant?
i'm a former mts graduate, and it's a long story but i recently became inactive after realising it was all nonsense.
the problem is, i've noticed that my mts background makes it almost impossible for people to accept my new status as an "inactive" one.
people think that, given the amount of knowledge i have, there is surely no excuse for me to reach this preposterous decision.. a friend from my mts recently began emailing me to find out my reasons.
"FYI - I probably shouldn't have meantioned UN-NGO and Malawi v. Mexico in my last email. Yikes!! Hope I make it out of this one."
This is definitely not good. If you had mentioned any past teaching or flip flop of doctrine....you could pass it off as though you were just doing intensive research with older publications. But the NGO and Malawi thing is going to be tough. Even if you say that you have NOT looked at apostate literature....and the NGO and Malawi thing was brought up in great detail by a workmate of yours.....they STILL have you locked into their radar. Remember......these are elders we are talking about. Your friend may tell you he believes you if you tell him this story about the workmate bringing these issues up to you......but it is a facade. He KNOWS you've been looking at apostate literature.....you just haven't admitted it yet. Be careful what you say from this point on....as every last word of yours is now under intense scrutiny.
i had heard about the mormons, but i had not been the least interested in them.
in that 5 month time period from when i prayed to god up until the day i got saved, no mormons or jehovah's witnesses came knocking on my door and they would always come to my house on saturdays.
anna looked up to see her baby brother falling toward her.
Here's a conversation I've had before. Warning....you may want to punch someone after reading it:
Witness - (relates the miraculous experience of someone praying for help to understand the bible when a JW shows up at his door)
Me - (show them proof of other religions claiming the same type of experiences)
Witness - "but our experiences are genuine!". "theirs are nothing more than lies"
Me - "Can you prove this? Do you realize how ignorant this sounds with nothing to back it up?"
Witness - "I can't prove that they lied, but if it did happen like they said....then it had to be Satan directing it....as a facade. He is always changing himself into an angel of light you know. "
Me - "Again, where is the proof for these speculative statements?"
Witness - "You KNOW God wouldn't direct a Babylonish religion. It HAD to be Satan. Or who knows....it could have just been coincidence."
Me - "And it wasn't coincidence when the homeowner was contacted by JWs?"
Witness - "you obviously have a bad attitude"
i remember that in my old hall there was a single pioneer sister who lived in the kh basement.
she did not drive, (22 years old) and she was.
such a "spiritual example" .. but now i remember going out in service with the group on a saturday morning, and she would be part of the group that was in my car.. we would do about an hour of service door to door, and then return visits for an hour or two.
I recall the pioneer "star" route. It was quite popular....especially in the winter time. Make a call on the southwest side of town. Then make a call on the north side of town. Then make a call on the southeast side of town.....etc.
Everyone would joke and laugh about this....and say with a wink "how do you think we get our "time"?
And this is divinely backed?
Exactly how did NOT stop to think and contemplate if God was really directing this charade?
Not to stereotype.....but I believe much of it comes down to age and experience. The cognitive dissonance of a 75 year old man that worked a third shift janitorial job so he can pioneer and remained childless because the end is right around the corner is going to be damn near impossible to overcome. Whereas a 25 year old with his whole life in front of him will likely accept the inconvenient truth a little more readily. Just a hunch
with every passing magazine and assembly, i ask myself, why?.
why does the governing body care?
the diatribes against college, against the internet and i-phones and vampire movies and afterschool sports and social networks and everything new, interesting or useful in the world, why?
Personally I don't believe they are in agony. I think that the cognitive dissonance is SO great that they truly do believe they STILL have the truth.....and that the "end" is just around the corner....and that they are saving everyone (7million JWs) from themselves by putting the kibosh on internet, education etc.
here is a quote from a ex-jw about this subject, i myself had alot of pressure from my family to get baptised and finally gave in at 14, wish i had left them a present on the way out of the pool that floated..at the dudley assembley hall .
i can't justify my entire family (parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandma) and friends shunning me because i chose not to uphold a dedication i made at twelve years old.
sure it was my "choice" to get baptized.
The younger you are the better as far as they are concerned. The older you get without being dunked....the greater chance there is that you may just do some research instead of trusting everything they say.
hi everyone, first i just want to say if it wasn't this forum, i'd be baptized!
i haven't managed to successfully end my studies with a zealous jw.
she uses everything against me to brainwash me into believing i need the org.
Mary - Yes. That is a real brochure. I have seen it hanging on the wall a kingdom halls before
