now, there are many opinions about recent changes - ranging from complete and utter cynicism motivating the governing body to naive belief in their own bullsh*t. also, are they just reacting to sudden developments or is there any coherent long term plan?.
i would think that if they truly expect to 'trim down' the organization by laying off publishers (in addition to bethelites, do's, branch members) then the watchtower magazine and various assembly talks should reflect that.
a bit of a follow-up: I was watching a PBS series on Nazi weapons and DID notice this sort of desperate, hell-bent, nearly fantasy-driven behavior in these totalitarians as they tried to fend off abject defeat. In particular, they got much nastier...

OK, I get that and I was very observant of the 'voluntary donation arrangement' at the time. They did NOT anticipate the drop in donations that occured. They freaked out - after thinking that it would cause donations to go up!
It sounds like your conclusions lead to the thought that they are almost hopelessly reactionary - that they have few long term plans and are mostly just "winging it".
If true, so much the better. It would also comport well (IMO) with these mass layoffs as to their effect: the experienced, stable people are tossed into unemployment and, instead, they rely on consultants and 'experts' who may have no long term plan or even commitment to the survival of the Organization.

This is a fair point but I think we need more of this sort of quote to determine what's going on behind the scenes.

We should reading or hearing about 'numbers don't count' or 'don't give up on the truth just because your Kingdom Hall is sold off' or other warnings such as that.
Such warnings or emphasis would be new or emerge as different than the usual bleatings about 'endure to the end'.
I can't say I recall anything such as the above popping up. Should we conclude that they're just naive idiots reeling from one potential disaster to the next, actually believing that Jehovah will NEVER let them REALLY fail? Is that the most reasonable conclusion?

hmmm, not too sure about that but all the recent re-branding seems to be heading .

Another factor to consider is the persistent layoff of experienced, loyal Witnesses. They dump 20 year Bethelites into the worst labor market in 60 years. They dump District Overseers. They shut down Branch offices and layoff employees.
At some point, you feel the lack of 'boots on the ground'. There is little or no infrastructure to handle problems and huge mistakes get made. You've simplified to the point that little of anything can get accomplished with success.
Critical, long-term decisions then get made by default by consultants who have no long term commitment or interest in the Organization's future.
I don't see how they get out of this mess. My only question remains : is the Governing Body simply cynical about these changes? Have they lost all faith?

im in a bit of a bind and im not quite sure what (if anything) i can do about it.
i was recently hired as a business consultant for a rather large company.
the company that hired me mentioned that they are concerned about a certain department and the way its being run, as this department affects every other department in the company.
If you have to confront him in private about his performance and the issue of religion comes up, challenge his faith.
Encourage him to quit and pioneer.
Honestly, if you have described his personality accurately, why is he a manager?

in the bible this word elohim which means gods is used more then any other word for god in the bible by far, infact most of the time were the word god is used its actually elohim.
they excuse by many scholars that is used is that the jews really ment to use this word to magnify gods greatness and thats why its in the plural sence instead of the singular.
but some say this doesnt make sence based on thier understanding of ancient hebrew language.
This makes sense to me but there are some Hebrew linguists who get very upset with the Elohim as gods idea.
