Saw some JWs this am! Couldn't stop laughing

this morning on my way to the office i decided to stop at the gas station to get some coffee.... as i am pulling into the parking space i see this woman w a haircut from the 80's the typical below the knee skirt and long sleeve shirt (is a 105 degrees over here in the shadow).... i immediatly knew she was a jw... she had the latest wt in her hands..... she skipped me and approached a group of young mexican laborers that were resting in the back of a truck... but... as soon as i walked out of the gas station... guess who was waiting for me???

the jw!!!

she wanted to do a presentation.. i looked at her and w/o saying a word i started laughing so hard the guys in the truck started laughing as well... she just looked at me and still kept trying to push her literatrash!!

Cptkirk, if they let you post here, that should prove that nobody's too stupid to post on this forum. You really did say that plenty of those JW women are "venomous bitches," so, if anybody has a problem it looks to be you. I don't know in which barn, exactly, you were raised and I have no idea what factors went in to your decision to write so boorishly, but write boorishly you did.

So I've called you out on it and now you call me stupid. I know you won't take my advice, but you ought to stop before you look like more of a ponce.

mythreesons, the issue is that Free! incited a (literal) truckload of laborers to laugh at the woman as well. And, of course, the issue is that cptkirk justifies the whole thing on the basis that plenty of JW women are venomous bitches, while Reality79 justifies it by noting that the sisters in northern London are hardly innocent. If you don't find that objectionable, then you're a tool. In any case, cptkirk simply cannot be reasoned with, which makes me wonder why he ever thought he was a bad fit with the JWs.

As for the OP, I simply reiterate that Free!'s reaction seemes insensitive: it's the sort of thing that ex-JWs might become angry over if it happened to their family who are still in the JWs. That, apparently, is a controversial observation.

I guess it's possible I'm being overly dramatic. On the other hand, let's recall that the story was that Free! was laughing so hard that the laborers in a truck also started laughing at the JW. So now Free! and a number of construction workers/landscapers/whatever are lauging at this woman: this woman with the hairstyle right out of the 80s who is wearing some synthetic blouse in the heat, for whom Free! claimed to feel sorry.

So, we have an unstylish woman being laughed at by laborers and Free! at a gas station. And Free! still isn't done with her, is she? She could let her off with something like, "Sorry, I'm not interested," but she does not.

Cptkirk then distingusihes himself by observing that nobody should care whether she was humiliated in public or not. Indeed, he offered the justification that many of those "'sisters' are venomous bitches." Reality79 helpfully pointed out that sisters in northern London are hardly innocent, so it doesn't really matter whether causing a truckload of laborers to laugh at a woman in public humiliates her or not.

So, maybe I'm disregarding the context, but all this seems a little unsettling. Whatever problems cptkirk had with the ladies back when he was a JW, and however the chicks treated Reality79 in northern London, I gently point out that this sort of behavour and attitude is uncivil and low. Plenty of people here still have loved ones who could have been that JW woman, laughed at in public by a truckload of laborers because Free! couldn't find it within her simply to be polite. Indeed, for Free! is wasn't all that long ago when she was that woman pitching JW literature in the heat.

But I'm the one with the problem, I guess.

People think that, because my avatar is Picasso's, "Le Reve," that I am a woman. I just happen to like his blondes, is all.

So, not playing a gender card. And, you really did bring up the NOT INNOCENT chicks in London; I assume that was not accidental.

Of course, it isn't just you. There seems to be a generalized split personality on this question: JW bitch deserved to be humiliated, JW women are all victims of abusive men (and thereby, presumably, undeserving of additional humiliation).

I don't think I'm a Dub defender, I simply think that there is such a thing as common decency and that, pursuant to that concept, one ought not be in the business of publicly humiliating a woman. Especially should one not be in the business of humiliating a woman who comes from a low socio-economic status, as indicated by the comments regarding her dress and hairstyle. Pointing out that lots of JW sisters are not innocent is hardly a mitigating factor, in my estimation, and smacks of the sort of misogynous attitude for which we criticize the JWs.

Which is simply to say, that the bitch deserved it doesn't seem like a compelling reason; less compelling is the idea that some venomous bitches in northern London deserved it. Seriously, listen to yourselves.

Actually, and I hate to say it, you come of as a dick; the elder comes off as a pretty nice guy. Interesting to note that he is concerned with your "wavering faith in the organization"; but we all know the JW faith actually IS in an organization instead of in God. But that's hardly news to an MS.

i feel safe enough to ask your advice and become involved now......from what i have learned about this forum it is occupied by sensible people who have left the watchtower influences for one reason or another.

Hmm. We seem to be split right down the middle in respect to my advice: everybody but me hates it.

Fair enough, I suppose. On the other hand, my viewpoint has some support in the academic literature to back it up. Sort of. If you consult the book, The Murderer Next Door, by Buss, you will read an extensive discussion of murder (of course) but also other sorts of bad behavior that people engage in when their sexual partners think about straying. Thus, men engage in stalking their ex.; women make up lies about the sexual propriety of their rivals. The reason they do this, of course, is because it works. When you raise the cost of dating other men, or decrease the appeal of other women, your partner is more likely to stay with you (or come back to you).

You would be surprised to learn how many women return to possessive, stalking ex-boyfriends and how many men return to ex-girlfriends when doubts are raised about the new girlfriends. These are effective, if nasty, strategies. On the other hand, this is your wife we're talking about and your future happiness together and your children's lives and their future happiness. I would make it the goal to get he back by any means necessary. If being a nice, subversive guy will do the job, do that. If being a jackass will do the job, be a jackass.

I understand others disagree.

I'd suggest you consider, what's the term?, going ape shit. Obviously, I don't mean real violence of any sort, but I think that this is not the sort of thing you can "manage." Every meeting must be an argument, every study must be an unplesant experience. She asks for permission to go in field service? Deny it. You are the "spiritual head" of the household in the JW parlance: assert it. Refuse to allow JW literature in your home, refuse to allow JWs to study. In short, be an ass. Message: JWs make for trouble in her home.

Couple this with rewards for skipping meetings or studies. You know what she likes, give thos things to her when she avoids JW activities. Message: avoiding JWs brings happiness.

Find some other outlet for her spiritual inclination. Surely, there is some nice bible church somewhere or some kindly Unitarians she can hang out with? Whatever, find something. This ain't a game, and you will need to do things outside of your comfort zone if you care to prevent this nasty little cult from reducing the happiness level in your life.

That's just me talkin'.

Bohm, I'm sorry I didn't get back to our earlier conversation. I'll make an effort.

The whole "congitive dissonance" thing actually is addressed at considerable length in Wright's book, which is right here on my desk as we speak. In fact, that objection to the claim about the resurrection are part of the background of the entire work. So, for Komarnitsky to say that Wright doesn't adequately rebut the cognitive dissonance idea simply means he missed the entire point. Well, a major point, anyway.

Look, for Jews of the period, having potential Messiahs getting whacked by Romans or whoever was pretty much standard operating procedure. They might think the dead wanna-be Messiah was still a prophet, an idea that was within the Jewish mainstream since prophets were often murdered. They might, if they were Helenized, suppose that the potential Messiah experienced apotheosis. But, given what the Messiah was supposed to do, and given the eschatological timing of resurrection, the idea that Jesus was physically raised doesn't solve any problems. Nobody was expecting anything like a resurrection and the resurrection caused more problems than it would have solved, cognitively speaking. Simply put: the resurection made them more wrong than they were before. The whole point of cognative dissonance is to make you right, against the evidence.

So, no, the idea of cognative dissonance does not seem to provide much of an explanation.
