Of course I addressed your point, Farkel. Your point is the entirely sophomoric observations that it's the journey that matters, keep seeking (even though it's all shit) because that's how we grow, which is the important thing (for some reason), and whatever you may find that works for you is great because it works for you (though you are quite certain it's all shit), just make sure not to get all fussy about how whatever works for you is, like, the thing that is going to work for, like, everybody. Just make sure to be willing to change, 'cause you have to change or else nothing will change.

You find all that on a series of greeting cards? Decades of personal reflection and exhaustive reading of all the sacred texts could have been saved had you simply bothered to browse the "thinking of you" section at the local Rite Aid.

Except that, I hope there exist people whom you believe love you, even though there isn't an empirical test for this. Actually, there are so many empiricists now who actually believe love doesn't exist that perhaps you are one of these, as well.

As for the OP, that's just sophomoric prattle. Not so much wrong as, well, sophomoric. It reads like the thought process for a freshman philosophy paper rather than the reflection of a sexagenarian, wise from his travels.

Ann, the Decian persecution seems to have been aimed more at an innovative sense of national unity than a strictly anti-Christian edict (and it was an edict). This, according to Rives, "The Decree of Decius and the Religion of Empire," (Journal of Roman Studies, 1999), (which I can send to you, if you like) may have had a a negative effect on Christians as a sort of bonus rather than an important aim.

The Valerian, Diocletian, and Galerian persecutions seem to have been more directly aimed at Christians.

The Donatist controversy involved people who gave in to some forms of the persecution. But, even here, most of the problems with the traditors seems to have been collaboration in turning over scriptures to the authorities. Near as I can tell, even the collaborators thought those who actually offered sacrifices in this way were really bad.

Actual sacrifice by Christians clearly happened some. There was a Church decree in Spain (searching for a reference) holding that those who sacrificed could be re-admitted to the church only after extensive pennance and, even then, only provisionally.

There's enough bad stuff in that story for a lifetime, designs. I guess we don't know what happened yet, except that Ratzinger re-opened a stalled investigation into the matter back in 2004. It's possible that Cardinal Ratzinger did not report to American authorities ongoing sexual abuse of minors when the report was completed in 2008(?). On the other hand, if one discovers that a 60 year old man was molested 50 years ago, it isn't immediately obvious what sort of responsibility you have with respect to reporting it. Is it even possible to report a 50 year old allegation of molestation (in Mexico) to American authorities?

Tough to say. It's possible that Ratzinger did wrong in all this. On the other hand, if I tell you I was molested 30 years ago when I was a boy, do you now have an obligation to report this instance of child abuse? Hell, is it even possible to report such a crime?

I know, I know, there's always some jackass telling the lynch mob that we need to think this through. Fuckin' killjoys.

After a long day rappelling on some building, in the cold, in the heat, hauling gear up, it feels good to hang out and talk some shit with the boys. I don't know, "demon spawn" just felt good. So I said it. I do that, sometimes.

But, designs, you worship the state. I don't think that's controversial. The JWs worship the state, too, just their own version of an idealized one. Kinda like you do, actually. I think the thing that drew you to the JWs soooo long ago was this crazy idea of a government that fixes shit, and we all get salvation through this government. Your lefty faith now gives you martyrs and redemption and a glorious future where the lion lies with the lamb, all without that pesky Jesus fellow who probably thought a great deal too much of himself for your taste. Having lost your faith in the JWs, you retain your faith in the naïve idea that the right set of laws will fix us all. At least eventually; maybe after 1,000 years.

It's charming in its own way. But, like I've said -- at the cost of being a bore about it -- JWs are really atheists with a pet conspiracy theory. You really haven't got past the Jw-ism, you've just replaced one pathology with another and managed to keep your bigotry and arrogance perfectly intact. I'd say it's a neat trick, but sooo many here have done the same one.

But you should keep congratulating yourself, designs: you've broken free.

The real reason Russians don't like the Watchtower

the jw.org is always going on about how unfair the russian authorities are and how brothers and sisters in russia for this reason are persecuted .but , it could be that the russians don't like the watchtower because the don't like ngo's .the watchtower has maintained it's status as ngo in europe and the russians don't like ngo's as they see them as foreign agents .the following is an extract from the recent news there :".

moscow, january 16 (ria novosti) - russian justice minister alexander konovalov said on wednesday that only one non-governmental organization in russia has so far registered as a foreign agent under a recently introduced law on ngos.. russia's controversial new law, obligating non-governmental organizations financed from abroad and involved in political activity to register as "foreign agents," came into force last november.

the first organization to register under the new law last december was the "shchit i mech" (shield and sword) human rights group from the chuvashia republic.. "as for requests, i have no other information besides the only association from chuvashia, about which you already know," konovalov told a session of the state duma, the lower house of the russian parliament.. the minister added that russian ngos are currently in a stage of "adjustment" to the norms of the new law, which should gradually become part of routine judicial practice.. alexei glukhov, the head of "shchit i mech," said earlier his organization decided to register under the new legislation to find out how the new law works from the inside.. the new legislation also requires ngos to publish a biannual report on their activities and carry out an annual financial audit.. failure to comply with the law could result in fines of up to 500,000 rubles ($15,900).. kremlin officials have repeatedly claimed that washington is using ngos in russia as a cover to bring about political change.
