bobsgirl - good for you honey! I've only voted twice. One was a referendum for Canada on whether Quebec (my birthplace) should separate. (NON!)
As for how long it takes to shake the borg's indoctrinations - it took me a good ten years. But I believe that's individual.
I know I'm definitely voting in the next provincial election. The presiding party has GOT to go.

I voted today ...
by BobsGirl ini have been walking around with a sticker on my chest that announces to the world that i acted on my civic responsibility and voted today.
i have to admit that i am feeling a bit vulnerable and fighting the impulse to rip it off.
there were two issues on the ballot however that i felt it important to support.

hawkaw - darn tootin'! Just like the WTS, s**t rolls downhill, so it's gotta start at the top right?
Yeru already pointed out that the pointy hat dude was quite old. And I know I'm not the only one peeved at his room-for-redemption response to what's going on. Dude lost alot of respect on that one. But, Pope's die, they don't step down. -

An End To Df'ing..Would It Satisfy You?
by Englishman ini was just wondering if an end to disfellowshipping might be enough to solve some other major problems, as well as deflecting criticism away from the society.. people could act on their own conscience over blood, for example.
sure, the wtbts could still say it was wrong to have a blood transfusion if they felt so inclined, but at least people would be able to make a decision based on a belief rather than acting out of fear of shunning.
it would certainly take the heat off the wtbts.. it would also take away the rage that exs feel when their families are instructed to shun them, so that the ex becomes a major and formidable opponent against the witness religion.

joelbear - i love the term you used: psychological terrorism That is exactly what it is. The JWs own version of holy war.
Blondie - yer right. Even if 'gasp' they were to do away with df'ing, it would still exist and be just as incidious.

Ain't it grand! Enjoy your day Tweetie. I know my girls love surprising me with stuff now. One time they actually blindfolded me and drove me an hour to Peggy's Cove (enormous rocks, lighthouse and crashing waves) I loved it! I hadn't been to the ocean since our van 'died', and knowing how dearly I love the ocean, they pulled this on me. There was also the very introspective stop at the SwissAir memorial site.
from a mom to another mom (and yes, to ALL the mom's on the board)
Happy Mother's Day -

Hmm, I didn't mean to imply that I think there is any connection between celibacy and pedophilia or homosexuality. I was suggesting that when adults are frustrated - who do they normally take their stress of any kind out on? Kids. If someone was going to try to keep something a secret, it would be easier to manipulate, scare, blackmail kids. That's why I asked about the celibacy oath.
As for homosexuality - I think it's genetic (aka - they don't choose it, they are born that way) It's darn possible that pedophiles are as well. Gawd, I probly opened a can of worms with this one.
Anyhoo... thanks Yeru :)

Oh I'm well aware of the statistics.... I'm one of them. (victim - not church though)
I was referring to those in positions of authority, and in this instance - the church (any church, but the topic is the Catholic church)
I'm not out to shoot the offenders. But I do not agree that they should be allowed to keep their positions. By harming a life once, they lose the right, IMHO, to hold any position of trusted authority.

I am baffled as to HOW Cardinal Law could think that a mere apology would do! And this apology was not made personally to the families and victims. In the end, it's salt on open wounds. Even the settlements (money) wouldn't heal the wounds.
The Pope went against the one strike because of the healing power of Christ. The last I heard - it's rare that a pedophile can be rehabilitated, and that's with tons of psychological help. Now they're only going to go after notorious offenders. What does that say to the poor individuals who get assaulted once? Once is enough to ruin a life.
Yerusalyim - cos yer Catholic (I studied Catholichism (sp) ) ... do you think a change in the celibacy oath is needed? Do you agree that it goes against human nature to abstain? I'm not saying this would end the child abuse, yet I believe there are alot of priests and nuns out there who are really sexually frustrated. We all know how angry, frustrated WE get when we have to go a length of time without any. They're no different from us. Waddya think?

I'm thrilled to hear about this. The misery that Law caused countless children deserves legal retribution. I was afraid he was going to be appointed (aka whisked off) to the Vatican before this stuff could happen. For some reason, he fails to understand that what he did was just as horrible as the actions of those priests he moved around.
Personally, I had hoped that the Pope would've enforced the 'one strike and you're out' as well as automatically reporting the incidents to authorities. Quite the let-down when he didn't. Thanks for posting that Yerusalyim. Definitely good news. -
