Just The 2 Of Us.

number 1 son is in australia.. number 2 son has a career, and next week moves into his own flat.. number 3 son leaves for uni at the end of the month.. our parenting days are coming to an end.

Dutchie - This is the first year that I have not had to purchase school supplies. My youngest graduated High School this past June. I did not miss the back to school rush at all.

My girls both live with me, but basically have their own lives. There's no more groundings and the like, but now they are getting a taste of what the real world is like. They are helping run the house in every way. By doing this, it will help them when they do spread their wings.

I remember thinking that when my girls finished school that it would get easier. No. Parenthood is a lifelong career. Kids, no matter how old, will always turn to parents for advice - if they are close to their parents that is. Each stage has its own problems. Parents will always have some reason to worry.

My girls and I are very close. We are always checking in with each other (safety rule). And even when they move out, we will be connected at the ears.

And a mom's heart is always open

Music as a coping tool for 9/11

What songs helped you? There was a thread started earlier about Alan Jackson's 'Where were you'. That thread inspired the idea for this thread.

The songs I still listen to are:

Overcome by Live There are two versions. One has actual voice clips from that day with President Bush making his statement at the end. It's quite heart wrenching. (if you want to dl it, it's Overcome WTC version) The other version is the studio version. The music is tremendously beautiful and there is a 'crying out for help' in the singer's voice. On that day - I think it's safe to say that ALL of us were overcome.

The other one is Utopia by Alanis Morissette which I find easier to listen to now that time has past.

But on 9/11, I will listen to the WTC version of Overcome. I don't want to forget. I want to honor all those families who lost loved ones. All the everyday heros who worked themselves no doubt into nightmares. And I do not want to become complacent and take things for granted. I also have designed a patch for my jeans and jean coat. It has a flag at half-mast with 9/11 and a broken heart on it. The flag is plain. And I will wear my USA/Canadian pin. Many ppl here have the dual flags in their windows.

So add your songs and why they are special to you, how they helped you etc.

Valis, I'm NOT a wimp (Tattoo)

yep i took lots of heat from valis for worrying about my pain threshold but i went down today during meeting time and got my first tat.

it's a hawaiian tribal turtle.

it wasn't painful at all, maybe because of the location but it did burn a bit.

LB - very nice indeed. Be careful! Tats ARE addictive. My oldest has this incredible tattoo on her lower back. It's a a claw ripping out of her skin, but it isn't morbid or scary. It's her - she has a wild side! She also has one on her calf - an .. darn.. ankh? (egyption cross I believe) She also has one between her shoulder blades.

I will be getting a couple of tats done. I've designed one with my childrens' names on it in the shape of an anchor. (because they do anchor me to life) I'll also get one of the star of life for my EMT days. One in memory of my brother Craig would be nice too. None of these would be large, the largest would be the anchor drawn using my kids names. I dont' want anyone elses designs on me. They have to mean something.

LB - tattoos are addictive. I've heard it more than once and seen it with my oldest. But they are a neat way of self expression.

If rich, what would you do?

if you had so much money that you didn't have to work, how would you spend your time?

i am going to bed, having been up after my bed time.

I'd do the following:

- put money in trust for my children
- make sure my mom is taken care of
- buy a home for my cousin who is being abused by her husband - anonymously make life better for a few 'working poor' families (include second hand vehicles, clothes, bills paid, medical expenses and education for the parent)
- build or purchase a large home with land for homeless kids with resourses
- buy a hobby farm for myself with room for me and my pets to roam
- buy a second hand vehicle for each of my girls and I
- return to school for education or psychology degrees to help kids
- travel to apostfests to meet all my family here
- open a shelter for alcoholics and drug addicts to have a safe place, be fed, sleep, clean and be warm
- donate to all the food banks in the area so that they are overwelmed instead of understocked on a regular basis
- organize transportation for volunteers to visit the elderly
- help Simon and Ang with this site
- help shunned father
- help whoever I could with dental and medical bills
- i'd work in my chosen field and continue to anonymously help those that the system is trying to keep down (welfare/social assistance/single parents)

Those are some of the things I would do.

remember when parents would brag about kicking their kids out if they did want to serve jah or if the kid got dfd and the father didnt want to lose his position in the k-hall and threw the kid out?.

remember when catastrophes would happen to other people/nations and jws would laugh about it and consider it just part of the last days?.

Musky - I'm sorry for offending you. It certainly was not my intention. And no one on this thread is calling ALL JWs mean. I also try to see each person for what they are. The problem with JWs is the doctrines that enable elders and MS to do very abusive things to people. One of the elders that ultimately hurt me the most, was a very nice man and wanted to help people. He gave into the pressure of the others who were most interested in power. I have also been in many congregations due to my first husband being in the military and in each, I saw these things occur. Certainly not all of them occured, but the abuse of power and the abusive treatment of people in one way or another.

Yes, you were in a long time. What I meant by oblivious was that some people honestly prefer to just see the good, and that's fine. Just because you didn't see these things going on doesn't mean they weren't happening. Those are two possiblities.

I'm glad for you that you didn't have to endure much of the above. And again, I apologize for offending you.

Minimus and Musky - Perhaps you could read the title of the thread again. The word 'mean' has apostrophes around it. Had Larry meant that ALL JWs were mean, there would be no apostrophes.

Being brainwashed does not sidestep the result of such actions - it's mean.

Musky - If you don't remember them putting the Catholic church down in spades - then you weren't listening very well. Or maybe you were just oblivious to all the crap that was going on around you at the hall and in the homes. (that is not an insult btw)

Remember how the elders would tell you they wanted to help you when in fact they wanted evidence so as to Df you?

Remember how the depressed ones were called spiritually weak and assigned 'mature, older sisters or brothers' to study with them?

Remember how the elders would assign a brother or sister to study with you but it was only to get close to you to get the goods and thoughts from you?

Remember how the elders and MS followed people around like it was of national security so as to keep the congregation clean?

Remember how only the 'in' crowd received hospital visits and the rest weren't worth their bother?

Remember how special pioneer's stories were always so exciting and fruitful when in fact they had been told to spice up their experience because it was actually boring?

Holiday thoughts

nilfun - you are NOT full of shit! That being said, it takes a long time to get out of that programming. I have been out for 10 years now, and last christmas was the first one I ever enjoyed without guilt.

My father always made every single holiday pure hell for mom and I, so I never learned to love holidays. It was one of the reasons I liked the dubs way back when.

You are in a space now where you are trying to find out just exactly where you personally stand regarding worldly issues - case in point - the abuse of the Indians by colonists.

There are people who refuse to eat red meat, or any meat at all or wear fur or who protest the WTO. Since being in the JWs kept us from caring about such things, we were sheltered and didn't have to think or form a personal opinion on such things.

Give yourself a break honey. It's a huge world when you consider all the issues and realities. Write it out on paper. I know that abuse by the colonists was not the reason the JWs do not celebrate Thanksgiving. So, you may be forming your own opinion, and if so, then honor that.

Perhaps, when Thanksgiving arrives, you could celebrate in a way that shows respect to the Indians. Use it as a time to be thankful you are no longer a dub. Locate some Indians and ask if you could talk to them about this. I'm sure they would be more than pleased to do so.

In the end, there is nothing wrong with being thankful. Use the day to be thankful you are not a dub, and honor your other feelings by reaching out to the Indians. It sounds like your conscience is speaking here and not the dubs.

I hope this has made some sense. Nilfun - never say you are full of shit. Don't put yourself down. Everyone has a right to voice their quandaries.
