Oh god...the family study. NONE of us wanted to sit there and study. It never lasted regularly in our family.

I had completely forgotten about this book, but as soon as I read the title to your thread, I knew what it was. I used to love that book. I read it to my sister and brother. Too cute. :)

If I remember correctly from the few people I knew who went to Bethel, they have to agree to remain single for a few years (can't remember how long).

Magazines adding up at the KH ?
by cab1000 inno doubt there are several faders on the board.
if your like me, you had been active, and had been recieving the magazines at the counter, every week.
then we start missing meetings, then disappear.

I think the MS in charge of the magazines has the discretion (oh the power!!!!) to change the order when he sees fit, such as in cases of people who are no longer attending.

How many "ascended the mountain", and didn't see "the light"?
by upside/down ini'm talking about the jw dream of visiting mecca bethel!
i had heard the stories of "the friends" who came back from bethel ("ascended the mountain") and they came back with their faces beaming.
it was so great, that they could talk almost endlessly about it and the entire experience seemed to be so "spiritual".

I went there twice, and was disappointed both times. I think I saw about 2 people who looked happy. Everyone else looked mechanical. They lived in tiny little crappy apartments, crammed in like sardines. I didn't feel any "spirit" or love. The best part of my trips to NY was going to the museums. :)

physical discipline
by Low-Key Lysmith inanybody's jw parents ever use that "don't spare the rod" song and dance as an excuse to beat the living shit out of you?
my parents used to relish in the whole physical punishment thing.
i guess the question i'm trying to get at is, do you think wts promotes and encourages physical violence in the home?

My parents used that scripture to justify abusing me.

Did You Ever Enjoy Going To Assemblies and Conventions??
by minimus inevery january, they read the letter as to where you'll be "assigned" for the convention and then the our kingdom ministry will detail all the do's and don'ts to remember.
was going to these things ever enjoyable to you?

No, not really. I'd always hope for some "exciting" stuff. I was one of the dupes who thought the Revelation book was cool when it first came out. I started wondering later on, how they "knew" all this stuff they came up with. But as a general rule, if you asked me in the car on the way home what I'd learned, I'd have to BS my way through it coz I never remembered anything.

Was anyone actually ever banned from playing chess?
by Jodo inawake!
1973 march 22 pp.13-14 chess-what kind of game is it?
the spirit of competition in chess may be stirred to fever pitch, which is reflected in chess players' attitudes and language.

I think that's one of those ones that most JWs quietly ignored. I know no one said anything about the chess players in our KH.

I am DF'd for having sex before marriage. I am now married, and we've been together for 4 years. If I hadn't been DF'd for that, it wouldn't have taken too long to be DF'd for apostacy, after I learned some of the truth about "the truth."

100mph winds
by LittleToe inthat'll teach me to eat beans on toast, yesterday!!!.
the wind is really picking up and the town is clearing as everyone is getting sent home from work.. we're expecting 100mph gusts here, on the west coast of scotland.. i'm gonna go home and get cosy, with a roaring coal fire.
it's just as well our houses are built for severe weather!.

The winds topped 90mph a little south of you where we are. Pretty wild...it was really noisy! It unsettled the dogs a bit, but we were all alright. I hope you're OK!
