brutalized toddlers
by little witch indoes anyone remember the advice from from the stage, encouraging mothers to remove babies from the room when they were hungry?.
how about, wooden spoons to beat toddlers into submission, preferably in front of the congegation, as to set an example in disipline?
was this just in our hall, or was it from the borg?

I don't remember it ever being preached from the podium, other than "spare the rod, spoil the child," but I do remember it happening all the time. Not just to me, but to almost all the kids in the hall. No wonder practically none of them are JWs anymore. And the parents would laugh and joke about their stories of abuse.
I also hated that line: "If you don't stop crying, I'll give you something to cry about." Even worse was, "This hurts me more than it hurts you." Bullshit. Let me break wooden spoons and brushes over your legs and see if it hurts me more than it hurts you. Happened to me all the time, mostly from my mother.

Elders vs. Clergy? Lacking
by patio34 insince i'm not a religious person anymore, this is not a thread advocating clergy people.
but simply a comparison between most clergy and jw elders.
usually jws have made it a positive that elders are not like clergy.

You know, I never thought of it that way before. When I was a JW, I used to repeat that line about volunteers vs. paid clergy, as if it were a good thing. But I didn't even stop to think about how COs, DOs, and Bethelites had their living expenses taken care of for them.

My parents thought the end was so near that they held me back from even starting kindergarten for a year. They said the end was going to be here any minute, so why put her in school? I graduated 10 years ago.

DID YOU EVER LEARN anything because you were a JW?
by minimus inwas there ever anything positive from being a witness?
could you say that because you were a witness at least......or was it all negative?

I learned to overcome my fear of public speaking. I still don't like it, but I do it much better than I would have without the TMS. I also learned I could be a very good spin doctor.
It did keep me out of some trouble, because I'm sure I would have been one of those teens having sex too early. Some people think there's nothing wrong with that, but I think sex as a teenager is too much. They're not ready to handle the emotional/mental stuff that comes with it.

Which did you prefer? Watchtower or Awake?
by LDH inwhen i was a jw, i really couldn't stomach the watchtowers.
the only articles i would read would be for the family study/watchtower study.
it seemed so archaic and old-people-ish.. i did read the awake from cover to cover almost every time.

Has Jehovah Forgotten About The Phillipino JWs?
by Mister Biggs ininteresting that the non-jw captives have somehow escaped.
could it be that the "angel of lot" led these captives out?
it's amazing how, if the jw captives die in captivity, then the jw's will spin it that "time and unforseen occurance" happens to all (even loyal jws).

No, no, no...it'll turn out to be something like this:
'The Bible tells us to expect persecution as Jesus' true followers. Some of us may even die. That just proves we are God's true servants, and no one else is.'
Blech.

Kudos to Tony Blair, UK PM
by Amazing in... not because he supports action regarding iraq, for that is a debatable issue.
rather, it is because tony blair has proven to be a stand-up statesman who has been able to work well with two very different us administrations, clinton then bush ... while keeping his own moral clarity and vision.
if tony blair represents the majority of british sentiments, then the usa can thank its lucky stars as having such a close friend and ally ... and americans need to better appreciate our british brethern.

I'm married to an Englishman. I support him.
A lot of English people feel the same about going to Iraq as a lot of Americans...that it doesn't really fall under the realm of a "war on terror." That it's what Bush has wanted to do all along.
