Dietary Quirks Among JWs
by millie210 ini recently had to accompany an older family member out of state to a family reunion.
it was a big reunion and not much was overtly made of the fact that i am "misguided" and not attending meetings (lost soul that i am) which was nice.
the thing i noticed that i was most struck by was all the dietary quirks in evidence during our 3 days together.

Closer to Fine
It's interesting. In my jw side of the family there are both. Some are all organic, no gluten, no dies, no chemicals, no vaccines, no medications, and no doctors (some of them no dr. even during childbirth). They don't avoid these items due to allergies. It's more of a distrust of worldly drs and food companies. Others from the same family love junk food. Lots of soda, sugar, white flour, booze, and lots of meds from doctors.Im curious, do you see a difference in how they perceive themselves as spiritual people? Is one side more part of the leadership than the other or another question, does one side seem more superstitious than the other?

freddo whoever didnt like your comment on theorizing a connection between being high strung and having some food intolerances or sensitivities, didnt like my comment following yours either!
I wish they would come out and talk to us instead of just hitting dislike.
I mean that sincerely as I appreciate all the different perspectives being given here.

If you are navigating life relying on "special" and unconventional information like you have to in the JW delusion, it is likely that this reliance is not just limited to religion. Religion, health and diet are connected by a need to observe certain demands and certain taboos, which however are often based on faulty reasoning. They share the hallmark of superstition that as long as you do this or that, you will be all right-- as your inner voice tells you.So eloquently put and easy to understand. Thank you.

It's Going Down: The Family Is About to Go to War Over... Halloween Decorations.
by Sorry inyup, you read right.
despite other personal turmoil that needs to be addressed, my family has decided to go nuts over halloween decorations being "too close" to our yard.
a new family just moved in next door; their kids are super young.

Hi CoCo, I do remember a big thing about aluminum in cookware being bad. I think it was even mentioned in an Awake?

See? This is why I love you guys, such great comments from so many perspectives.
I had not thought about the relationship between being high strung and food issues but in my families case I do see somewhat of a correlation.
The religion itself makes my family act so judgmental and they put so much pressure on themselves to maintain their "high standards" that trying to figure out which came first (the being high strung thus food issues OR religion making them high strung = food issues) becomes similar to the puzzle which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Im surprised anyone could eat anything frankly!
Bear in mind I grew up with a lot of these people and we all used to eat hot dogs and drink cheap off brand grape soda and play in the hot sun all day with gusto.
What happened?
These are not elderly people either. Most are in their 40s and 50s. They are all pioneers, elders, one is a missionary and one just got the boot at Bethel after 25 years.
So what I would love to hear from you guys is
1) Have you noticed this too among JWs more than the general population?
2) Is there some correlation between how high ranking or "spiritual" you are and how quirky your diet is?
3) If so, what do you think is really going on here?

Interesting that they use the same words, the same illustrations, the same sense of conviction etc..
They both should be called "Corporate Spirituality"

Is there anything good JWs taught you still benefit from?
by venus insome years ago, i attended a jw wedding.
marriage speaker said something which changed my life for the better, and it helps me even now.
he told the couple: “the very make up of man and woman is such that conflicts can often arise between you.

Though most of the JW teaching seemed unsound and irrational, points in this marriage talk were amazing which helps me even now in all avenues of my life. [I don’t know all JW marriage speakers use the illustration and explanation because this was the only one I attended]Looks like you were able to internalize some good skills on honing ones perception in dealing with others.
I liked the posters comment that perhaps a good degree of this was a measure of the man giving the talk and not any credit to JWs. That sounds likely.
I get what you are saying about the TV illustration too. It isnt at all about a "TV" it is about resolving the problem in a way that leaves both partners happy and the relationship intact.
My best thing I learned was the scripture (Proverbs maybe?) that there is wisdom in a multitude of counselors.
That has helped me many times to be more of a team player.

Saying hello for first time
by pimojw ini have been sneakily looking at this forum, almost every day, ever since it began!
it has taken me till now to actually register and contribute.
(actually i did register with a different name in the beginning but never commented).. i am a pimo elder with a fairly long history of senior "positions" in the organization.

Hi pimojw,
Welcome, welcome, welcome!
I feel like Flipper and wish you were my brother (a currently serving elder who is disdainful of me and my fading).
I am pretty sure you are NOT him but you do give me a lot of hope with your posts about your situation. If you can do this - so can he....one day!
You are headed in a good direction now. Even as things crumble and fall away, the relief and building of a real life far out weighs any losses.
At least that is what I am finding to be true.
Really glad you are here and posting.
