  It sickens me that the world is this stupid that they can't see who the real victim is. It's his daughter. That kid having a father who was in prison most of her life, the drugs that was in that household and a mother who didn't leave but raised that their daughter into believing that this is a normal way of life.Why turn a thug into a hero when the real victim was his daughter.

  I understand what your saying about the daughter being a victim. She may never have broken free of the poor example of a father she had, who knows?

  I would say she is no longer a victim now. Overnight she has gone from a poor role model dad to being a rich little girl courtesy of the city of Minneapolis. .

  There will be funds for her, scholarships, not to mention a huge lawsuit paid out.

  here in Central Europe I feel as safe as never before, and "The End"TM is as far off as never before

  there have been so many 'critical times' before and this is hardly the worst

  I only wonder, why the praching activity has allowed to be dimmed out like this, no more urgency at all

  I didn't realize the preaching work was dimming. I thought they were just doing the quarantine stuff like everybody else.

  If it is indeed dimming, could it be because it has been failing for a while and this is an excellent "excuse" to scale back and make it look like it was all part of the non-existant plan?

  i hear this from the leftist idiots all the time.

  if someone breaks into your home 6 bullets are enough.

  well if its a one of i would argue that i still my need more round for even just one person.

  I am surprised that no one is linking the world wide rioting to the being cooped up in homes for the last 3 months.

  Its not really ALL about a black man being killed by police or we would have seen it before now.

  People are saying "the time has come". No.

  Whether the issue is valid or not its "time" is here due to the confluence of circumstances the virus brought about.

  Out of work = loss of social identity

  Fear of loss of income/disease/ lack of routine = restlessness/heightened anxiety

  Police do something gravely injurious caught on camera = match to dry tinder.

  People out marching re-establish a social identity at warp speed. It "feels" right to be gathering together and the "fighting back" replaces the sense of powerlessness people felt with the virus with an immediate and potent sense of power.

  I am all for smaller government and I guess that would include smaller police forces.

  Having grown up kept largely ignorant of most social issues as a JW, I am not really qualified to address deep reform.

  Having said that, I see a lot of things that seem like they should be decriminalized (such as prostitution as an example) freeing law enforcement for serious matters that affect life and safety.

  A smaller force would by definition be a more accountable force.

  The National Anthem

  recent controversies in america brought this to mind , although i don’t want this to become a political thread , rather to discuss the wts rules that stop a jw showing respect for the national anthem.. the watchtower says that doing so is an act of idolatry, giving worship to the state or its icon.

  as such witnesses remain seated when the anthem is played.

  in britain people simply stand quietly to show respect, there is no hand gesture.. when i was a boy, every cinema show and theatre concluded with the anthem,being played .usually it was orchestrally with no words sung.

  Ah, you are bringing back forgotten memories Blues!

  As a witness child I got used to killing time standing around waiting for an event to start so I would ALREADY be standing and thus could remain standing until the anthem was over.

  Such a to-do about nothing.

  I think a lot of us are feeling the residual effect that fear and uncertainty (I am referring to the virus) can have when people have to live with that in a sustained way. What's it been now, 3 months?

  Really all that's needed when the situation becomes that stressful on people is a precipitating incident. Then, the incident becomes like a match to dry tinder. I think that is what we are seeing now

  In the next few days, we should see a tamping of the fire on the looting and acting out. That kind of activity is not sustainable in a static way.

  It either has to gain a lot of momentum or it dies out.

  protests have been organized across major us cities and horrible riots have occurred.

  I read all the posts and come away with a lot to think about due to other perspectives.

  Personally I think at least a small part of this is due to people being cooped up and unable to use their fight/flight response against the virus.

  They're using it now.

  I have felt the same as you Gorby, I would guess many of us are feeling very similar emotions as you have so well expressed.

  Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, has been quoted as saying “change is the only constant in life.”

  This was written long before the Bible book of 1 Corinthians.

  The irony is that we like things to stay the same if they are good or even tolerable. So we experience negative feelings if the status quo is seemingly disrupted but at the same time, we know growth requires tumult.

  Times of war result in times of peace. Sickness results in greater awareness of how to ensure the biological survival of the species. Governments rise and fall. Checks and balances.

  We are experiencing tumult and change right now. Whether it will result in a better world scene remains to be seen.

  This present climate has me thinking about how people must have felt during other times of great tumult such as WW 1 and WW2 which were relatively recent in human history.

  I was so awake and aware of everything when I first left the JWs. Over the years since, personally, I think I had gotten soft, a little complacent.

  I am awake now. I find myself sniffing the air so to speak trying to discern which direction the winds of change are going to blow. I am eating, supplementing and exercising better and I am also thinking harder. I don't think I was in as much danger from the virus as I was from complacency.

  I feel a personal responsibility to come out of all of this better.
