Well count me in the simplistic group!

Financial law is way over my head.

I was thinking more along the lines of watching in stunned disbelief as helicopters whirled over the Enron parking lot while stunned employees stumbled out of the building, cardboard boxes of their former offices in hand.

Someone had to tip off the helicopters to be there to film it, right?

But lets go with this statement:

so last January was the big meeting with elders. The letter about construction had to have been drafted before it was read, so the very latest it was being composed in late 2014 correct?

So what thing of magnitude would they have been unaware of? Its only been 3 financial quarters since then,

Jan - March, Apr - June, July- Sept.

So what huge thing happened (in accounting terms) between January and now that accountants would have had no way to see coming?

i just read an email from a friend, and she shared some very interesting emails from her friends about information on changes now happening at the bethels around the world.

Would it be reasonable to think that whatever "it is", that "it" became an issue after the letter and subsequent meeting of all elders last January to inform them about "the greatest building work ever?

first off, i'd like to state that i currently have "privileges" in the congregation and volunteer at bethel on and off throughout the year.

that's as much information as i will currently give about myself.. starting off, i think something big is coming in the form of lawsuits and bad pr.

they seem to be batting down the hatches in preparation for something the last few years and even more so the last few months.

stories were handed down generation to generation to generation before being written down.

While all your options listed are possible I tend to think it is number 3.

I dont think they had no financial advice I think they listened to the wrong advice.

That would indicate a huge power struggle is going on high up and they listened to the wrong team.

OR they listened to the right team but something BIG has blown up (indicated by taking down the pictures of Warwick from their website) and they have to conserve funds.

The original post makes many good points but the one about them being legally understaffed really stuck out to me.

It made me remember that letter they sent out recently frantically asking about lawyers and paralegals in local halls.

If there is any connection between that letter and what the OP said, then they are not changing their M.O. - they are still scouring their own ranks thinking a way of pulling things out of the fire will "appear",

Well we can solve this easily...arent there court reporters constantly scouring the courthouse news?

This would be big news - as Morpheus said.

Any of our legal people know how long something can be kept under wraps before it is public record?

My Mom Is Dying

i just wanted to say that my dear 89 year old mom is terminally ill and will soon pass.

she is on morphine and hanging on.

she has been a devout witness for about 60 years and a wonderful mother.

Since I am moving rather slowly away from being a JW, my feelings about the Bible are in flux.

I am trying to go slowly because I dont want my thoughts about the Bible and everything else to be reactionary. I want them to be well researched and stand alone thoughts that are authentically mine and not part of my reeling away from "all things JW".

When I read the topic of this thread my first thought was the Bible is probably about as accurate as most of the worlds holy writings.

After reading the thoughts posted above, I would have to say my current thinking aligns mostly with what WireRider wrote.

I can think of Bible versus that have made me act better as I go through life. Two I have used at work a lot are

the stupid one is replying to a matter before he has heard it

and

in a multitude of counselers there is wisdom

To be very honest, there are also many quotes I use daily that are not from the Bible - just men who pierced one of lifes veils in a humorous or succinct way that I find a good reminder.

hi everyone i need some links to pro-jw sites that mention the letter to be read out and also about the bethel lay offs .

can be face book or anything as long as it's for jehovahs kingdom, but mentions those 2 things.

There isnt any more mention of the leaked letter on JW talk. The mods removed every trace of it.

After much hand wringing it was decided the announcement about Bethelites could be discussed however since it was public knowledge.
