  The writing department

  i don't go to many meetings now.

  i still feel the need to go every now and again for my husband's sake.

  i usually go on a sunday, maybe once a month or so and i look at the wt article under discussion to see if i can stomach it before i go, a lot of the time i feel i just can't do it.

  There was a Sunday study article a year or so back (when I was still going) that made a point about the need to recognize how very hard it is on some to make meetings or to do anything at all spiritually speaking.

  The article said to just make a meeting can be more of an effort for some than pioneering for someone who has better circumstances.

  It also said to look at the efforts of others in that light.

  I sat there thinking, amen! Of course the reason it was "hard" for me was because I had just had enough of the rhetoric and the spinning but still, they had the part about it being hard to be there right!

  As it turns out, that was my last Sunday appearance at a Kingdom Hall. I left that day thinking that they had made a good point in that study article but it was really too little too late in my case.

  Besides, for every one thing they say that borders on kind or "normal" there are at least 3 xs as many articles written in such a way that it makes you want to slap your forehead in disbelief.

  I feel for you tornapart. I held on as long as I could too. Some of us have a lot to weigh out family wise, thats for sure!

  i've done the hitchens, dawkins, harris thing and as much as i rate them i'd like to move off at a tangent .

  always enjoy philosophy or even something with a theological bent.. i'm coming to the end of heretic by ayaan hirsi ali and can thoroughly recommend it.. c'mon guys, don't let me down .

  Your thoughts on Halloween , yes, no or maybe ?

  well its that time again when the ghouls come out to play.

  i personally think halloween is a bit irresponsible and inappropriate from a sociological perspective.. there's something about the intent of frightening young impressionable children minds with frightening objests.

  and feeding them candy which most likely cause tooth decay and stomachs is irresponsible activity conducted by adults.

  grew up in east la in a bad neighborhood to a black mother and white father.

  i never knew my father because he died in a car accident when i was a few weeks old.

  my mother converted as a jw soon after when two sisters came to her door and offered her comfort, which was something she needed.

  i'm reading an excellent book about defectors from the mormon church called differing visions: dissenters in mormon history.

  through a collection of essays from many academic authors it looks at the life stories of dissenters and reasons for departure, as well as analysing the impact of their dissent on the church itself.

  fascinating stuff and makes me wish there was a similar volume looking at the key dissenters from jws/watchtower and the impact they had.

  Mid - Week Meeting This Week

  the study is in the "imitate their faith" book which is merely a compilation of previous short stories about bible characters that were featured in a series of watchtower articles.. they waste no time beginning their spinning and supposition with the cain/abel story.

  So this is how the meeting went in its entirety:

  Brother opens with prayer and says "Please bless the governing body as they are writing this information for us we are about to cover"

  
  

  {my mind says - not according to Geoffrey Jacksons testimony in Australia - he says the writing committee writes it and they just sign off on it}

  Bible Highlights - bland

  Bible reading - bland; no comments - just read and sit down.

  The book study as commented on above in everyones posts.

  The Service Meeting:

  Fakey presentation of a tract

  Announcement - Outdoor work at Assembly Hall- no shorts, no plunging necklines, no T-shirts with logos or symbols, no children except in certain areas accompanied by a parent
  

  (serving as tribute in the Hunger Games sounds more fun actually)

  Then a sound drama from headquarters to be played over the sound system. It was about Jonah. I had to look at the material to see what the application was supposed to be and it was supposed to be that we are not to mind if we get corrected.(by Jehovah of course)

  It was very poorly done. I havent heard many others so maybe this was a fluke

  (I doubt it)

  One brother commented that we need to "like" the new mid meeting program even if we dont really think we do NOW because the change means the end is coming and we want to keep up with the chariot and not expect us to let the chariot drag us because the chariot doesnt drag people....its their own responsibility to keep up."

  {my mind - what???? like it even if you dont and change means the end is coming.... what if they hadnt changed the program? Would that mean the end wasnt coming?}

  The concluding song 113 was disconcerting because it was music from an old song (something about virgins and lamp oil maybe?) but it was sung with new words.

  Weird.

  I really dont care one way or the other. But then, I dont have young kids. If I did maybe I would have to think about this deeply and pick a place to stand.

  One thing I remember from doing some extensive research eons ago is that the end of October (or Samhain as mentioned above) actually can be traced back to the date of the flood.

  Thus making it the date the demons dematerialized.

  If I vaguely remember it was working off of a date in the scriptures?

  Sorry not more clear in my memory.

  It is interesting that whether that is true or not, as Samhaim, All Saints Eve or Hallow een, it has cleaved to the traditional theme.

  I was completely floored at the entire content of the study.

  Did I really used to sit through this stuff every week?

  Good point about the anachronism of inserting a bronze age weapon into a stone age story.

  Recent study links processed meats to cancer

  so a recent study says processed meats are just as dangerous as cigarettes when it comes to cancer.

  the wtbs has had a long time stance that smoking is a df offense.

  my question is if there's proof beyond doubt, why doesn't the wtbs make eating processed meats a df offense?.

  I think I probably should have started a thread about the manipulation of minds at the book study myself.

  I decided to search first and found this thread so I just tacked on a post.

  It is pathetic that what RRP, the original poster. wrote about was a Watchtower article and that is all the new study book is.....all those articles bound up and called a book that will now be studied for two years or more.

  Incredible.
