We got the same line when we were exiting the borg (and still hear it quite often) : "Well, if you don't do it for yourselves then at least do it for your children." [8>]

i've been df'd since last september.
i haven't heard from my ex-best friend in about 6 months.
so all of a sudden she emails me yesterday asking one simple question:.
We got the same line when we were exiting the borg (and still hear it quite often) : "Well, if you don't do it for yourselves then at least do it for your children." [8>]

i have been lurking here for about 3 months or so, and i guess i finally decided today to jump on in and join the board.
i dont want to make this post too long, but just to give you all a background......i was born in 1975 to a jw mother and non believing father.
i have one younger brother.
Hey Soledad!
Welcome. Glad you're here!
I grew up in a 'divided household' also, until I was 12, it was then my father became a JW. My mother was baptized shortly after I was born though. My mom let me miss some meetings but when my father came into the 'troof' it was off to Every meeting for all of us.
ok even at my old age[8>] i still like the super hero action flicks.. the better ones anyway.
the first superman, the first batman and even some of the sequels to bat man were not bad.. how ever this week-end it seemed like everyone went to see spiderman all at once so i didn't go yet.. they just gave the stats on the news.. spiderman grossed over $$$114,000,000.00 so far and still counting.. did anyone go see it this week-end????.
and if so.
We took the kids to see it yesterday - they loved it.
My JW mother-in-law called this morning to chat and asked what we did over the weekend. I told her about going to the movie and she asked what it was like, after my comment she goes on to tell me that they discussed the movie in field service car group and several decided they weren't going because they heard that the movie portrayed alot of terrorism.
LOL!
I told her that the kids can tell what's make believe and what's not.
We loved it!!

for the first time in a long time i actually have something to look forward to.
knowing that i no longer will be under the constraints of a oppresive religion has done a lot for me.
(and i have'nt left yet) .
Thanks Dana! That info helped.
I emailed ya'
i don't know if this q has been brought up on the forum, if so i apoligize, but i was just thinking about this today, and wondered how many here left or are thinking about or trying to leave the b-org as result of the un fiasco?
how many do you know of that left due to this?.
seedy
I was trying to help my husband see the truth about the 'truth' and the UN thing was what got him out. So you can add one more!
It was the hypocrisy of the whole matter that did him in.
Everyone else (family that are JWs) we have mentioned the UN issue to have not seemed very alarmed by it. But maybe it has started them on the thinking path.

Go for it Leander!! I know getting a college education would be something you would never regret.
I have also been thinking about college. I'm soon to be 32.
Safe4kids:
(or anyone else who's been to college or is now attending) would you mind filling me in on the college schedule? I mean, how many hours a week do you spend at college?
What I am asking is how many hours are needed to get a degree? What is considered full-time?
Do you take one or two classes a day or do you go all day? Are there evening classes?
I have no clue, so any help would be appreciated.
I would have to arrange college around my life, with kids it has to be that way.
hey dude--i'll send you an email to make sure you see this---.
in the thread yadira posted, you stated:.
when i was a rising star, i used to help collect the money from the contribution boexes after the meetings.
I remembered where I read what I commented on in my above post. It was in Ray Franz's book IN SEARCH OF CHRISTIAN FREEDOM.
On page 279, (Legalism-Opponent of Christian Freedom) Ray speaks about how the Branch Committee in Colombia was preparing for an annual zone visit and had a list of questions to which they sought answers from the headquarters representative. One of the questions on the (and I quote from ISOCF) "list dealt with the branch's reporting of certain income to the government as donations, while showing it on their books for the Society as investment returns."
The branch members "felt disturbed about this..."
Here is their question: "According to Colombian law for non-profit corporations we are prohibited from making loans on which interest is charged. Doing so would classify us as a commercial firm and liable to pay corporate taxes at the rate for limited partnerships. At the moment we classify the income from Hall loan repayments, which includes interest, as donations for purposes of reporting to the government on our tax return. However, on the Society's books this income is classed as investment returns, and on the individual loan ledgers the payments on principal and interest are clearly identified. Could we have your comments on the moral aspects of this procedure?"
So to correct my previous post, I remembered incorrectly, the book does not say that the Society was actually got into any legal trouble, but the branch members themselves did realize that this situation was morally and legally wrong.
