over the past week since i've announced that i was stepping down i have had a few conversations with my family, and against my better judgement i mentioned that i was having doubts.
invariably almost every discussion about the jw religion eventually boils down to the argument that only witnesses are doing this or that.
unfortunately this is a weak part of my debate, i have only been associated with the jw religion so i have very little information on what other religions beleive and practice.
Six is right, I've used the argument with JW family before that the Mormons also preach and they said "They will fight in wars".
Have you read Ray Franz's books? They were quite helpful for me.

i was looking at the june 1, 1985 watchtower, pg.
29-31 with its legalistic baptism vows, where one recognizes their association with gods spirit-directed organization, when i was struck by the context of the article.. essentially it gives a last minute warning about proper decorum with swim-wear used for baptism a serious and solemn occasion.

another question.. this one is for all those that began doubting the organisation when they were an obedient jw.. although i am sure you rarely shared it with anyone, what was the one problem you had with a certain jw only doctrine?.
what i mean is, what little gremlins lurked at the back of your mind?
what were the doubts that you kept hidden and what made you finally act on them?.

I was never supposed to go to school in this system, so I was told. I now have kids in school.
When I inherited a large WT library (about 3 yrs. ago), the 1st thing I did was search the books & bound volumes for the 1975 date. I became sick to my stomach when I found the date in print.
I remember being told that 1975 was the year of the "great cleaning out of Jehovah's organization" of those lacking faith.
I was very curious because I wondered how all of those people could come to the same conclusion about the same date all on their own. Also I knew how the organization felt about independent thinking and that if so many people had been expecting this date, the Society would have definitely corrected their thinking.
I continued my research into even older publications and found that previous dates(false prophecies) had been set by the WT for the return of "faithful men of old" (1925), Jesus second presence (1874), etc.
If I would not have found that date(1975) in print, I don't know where I would be today. Probably still in the org.

I think the best signs at the conventions were those that the "apostates" were holding as they were picketing the convention grounds. Of course we weren't supposed to read those.

has anyone seen or heard of any letters going out from headquarters to the body of elders directing them to inform the congregations not to watch dateline?
i was wondering if this is really true or just a rumor.
if it is true, this is terrible that they can actually deny members freedom of press or punishment.
I just wonder how long in advance Dateline will notify the WT as to the airing date.
